First of all, this is not spam.So read this....

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p44/dornelas_photos/pennywise/Pennywise_Myspace_Banner_newfinal.jpg (http://www.myspace.com/textango)

HOW
It's really easy.
Step 1: Add Textango as a friend.
Step 2: Check your MySpace on March 25, 2008. You will get a bulletin and/or message with a link to download the album for free.

That's it. No bullsh*t, no emails, and no unnecessary messages. So if you haven't already, click here to add Textango. This is the only place where you will get the album.

WHY
"We know that this will piss off a lot of people in the music industry, and what do we say to that? 'Who cares?' We've been pissing people off for 18 years. Why stop now? We have been telling people to get our records by any mean necessary for 17 years. As a band, we decided that it was time to come to terms with the facts. There are a lot of people out there who want their music for free, so we got proactive and with the help of MySpace Records and Textango we found a way to make it happen...we couldn't be more stoked…PENNYWISE FREE TO THE PEOPLE."
– FLETCHER DRAGGE

"I think for a band like ours that has put out eight albums already, it's a great way to give back to our fans for their support over the years. We can also potentially expose our music and message to people around the world who may have never had the opportunity to hear it because they either couldn't afford to buy a CD or they didn't have access to music outlets or good distribution. It's a way for us to instantly expand our music into places it's never been before. Maybe there's someone in Sri Lanka that is a huge Pennywise fan but just doesn't know it yet."
– JIM LINDBERG

WHAT does Textango have to do with this?
Textango is responsible for making this album FREE to the people. They are paying for it so you don't have to.

WHAT is the album titled?
Reason to Believe

WHAT comes with the download?
The entire album comes as super high quality, 320kbps MP3's that are DRM-free (in other words you can do whatever the heck you want with them), along with amazing original artwork from Grammy Award-winning designer Don Clark.

WILL it be free forever?
Only for a period of two weeks.

CAN I get the album for free even if I don't live in the US?
Yes! This full album download is available worldwide!

WILL there be a physical album available as well?
Yes.
Adds FLETCHER: "All on the same day—March 25—you will be able to go out and buy our new record, download it and then go buy it, or just download it for free and sit back and check it out. How cool is that…an option for all ways of thinking?"

On the same day, PENNYWISE and MySpace Records will also release a CD version of Reason to Believe to retail outlets for sale, with the CD containing the same songs as the downloadable version. There will also be a vinyl version available a few weeks later that might have some extra goodies on it ?

WHAT else can you tell me about the album?
Longtime PENNYWISE fan and seasoned producer Cameron Webb (Social Distortion, Motorhead, Sum 41) has signed on to produce and mix Reason to Believe.

Jim says that the new album "will be a combination of what are fans expect from us with a few curve balls thrown in here and there. We have to be happy with what we're doing before anyone else, so it will all be about trying to challenge ourselves."

WHY do people still care about Pennywise?

HOW do they basically re-write the same album over and over again without feeling even slightly guilty or ashamed of themselves?

Uploading their album on internet for free is a reason to care about Pennywise.
I know they sound the same over and over but i like them allot.

But why People still care about Britney? Noodles also listen to Britney! He is wearing a Britney t-shirt in the studio video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5ygPrxHbmM) ,Remember?

BUT Radiohead did the same thing months ago.

AND I guarentee that Radiohead's doing this had much more impact on the music industry, since they're a.) better and b.) much more popular.

True, but come on now. Radiohead and Pennywise? You're practically talking about two different universes here. It's not that it's even that it's a bad comparison (cause it's not...two bands are doing something similar); it's just an invalid one because...come on! Radiohead and Pennywise?!

As for Radiohead being more popular: true again...but again, different universes here. What is popular as defined by one universe (skatepunk on Epitaph) vs. the other (splooging material for critics whether they release anything good or not) is just so different.

Jakebert
02-13-2008, 05:08 PM
BUT...okay, I'm gonna stop that joke...Radiohead being more popular has nothing to do with genre/relative fan base/ect. Radiohead are one of the few bands that's almost guarenteed to sell in big numbers, so a band that famous making a statement like that is much more notable than a band that more or less is just a smaller band with a cult following, not saying that cult followings are a bad thing since most of the bands I listen to fall into that category.

Plus, Radiohead's release wasn't a completely temporary thing. I believe that the ability to set your own price for the album was valid until the physical copy a few months later, so the window of time you could do it in was huge.

I hear ya Jakebert, but I still can't envision a world where a comparison between Radiohead and Pennywise flies. It/They are just so different in every way possible that they could release the album on the same day, for free, with the same friggin' cover art and I still wouldn't be able to connect the two.

But Wolfbutter's post wins. Hardcore wins. 1010 Wins. lol.

AND I guarentee that Radiohead's doing this had much more impact on the music industry, since they're a.) better and b.) much more popular.

But when Radiohead did it for free, the MP3's were low-quality and something like 25% of the million+ downloaders paid, so even if they paid a buck for the entire album, that's at least $250,000, and even given the shitty state of the dollar, that's more than enough to pay for recording costs, esp. in a home studio.

I actually like what Pennywise is doing more than Radiohead's idea. The band gets paid, probably per download, and when the consumer gets to download it for free, there will be many more downloads than otherwise and the band thus gets paid more. Plus it's high quality with artwork, and the physical release is available for those who want it. Though I'm a little suprised the CD isn't going to be a deluxe edition, this is definitely the direction the industry is moving in--digital main release, with a limited but specialized physical release to support.

I agree with 1565.

I think it's a little funny that the quotes from people in the original post here make it like "OMG free music??? WHAT A CONCEPT! You can listen to the album for FREE!" It makes them sound really ignorant... because there really are so many ways to get music free as it is. Obviously a lot of people are against illegal downloading, so it gives them the opportunity to do it without any guilt... but they're treating it like it's something amazing and new that nobody would've ever believed. As though they're giving the physical copies of the albums away.

Anyway, I kinda like Pennywise. They suck. That's obvious. But I loved them in my punk rock phase in high school, so I still listen to them now and then. I might check out the new album... we'll see.

You completely missed their point. It's not the fact that they're getting the music for free that's cool, it's the fact that a band is putting it out there for free (there's a difference). It's not remarkable, it's just a cool thing they're doing.

i may have heard false information but did anyone else hear about them leaving epitaph?!

as for the whole "re-writing" debate, they do what works for them rather than trying to keep up with music trends. they are never going to please everyone, if they change their sound people comment such as "thats not pennywise" and accuse them of selling out and by keeping things the same some still moan about it!

The only reason I had to dl it from a torrent I'm currently mooching wireless, so my connection goes in and out. If I try to download something from a website, the connection always gets interrupted before it's done, and I'm back at square one. With a torrent, it obviously picks up where it left off.

But otherwise, I generally agree with you.

I am listening for (pretty much) the first time at Pennywise seriously. WOW... I must say that it seems the last decent band on Epitaph (besides bad FUCKING religion) cause this album blow off my panties, and I just put it on my iPod. Well... I will buy it when I found it in the local stores here in Mexico City (LOL... it was a pain in the ass find every single album of bad religion, but new maps of hell was here one day after the release).

It's sad, and I would write them off for good if it weren't for one band: the Weakerthans. Them, and the rest of the ANTI- label are the best things going for them. I think it's a shame that in order for those artists to get a decent amount of publicity, they have to sign two bands that sound like Motion City Soundtrack (and I like Motion City Soundtrack, for the record.) But, whatever. That's business, I guess.
