You've probably noticed that I've been posting a lot. No, stop cheering, sit down a minute. That's because my new job, while not actually boring, consists a lot of just typing into a computer. So , as a public service, I'll spend quite a lot of time chatting to you all.

So, I think this thread should be the "Hello, I'm bored at work, I'm gonna post in here" thread.

So, to start off. Hello. I'm bored at work.

Not bad. Peter's got a new job, he's heading up some big building complex. Don't really know the details, I'll let you know.

Whats your job?

Just a generic office data-entry thing. Just something to tide me over 'till I get an IT job.

I'm trying to get a job at the reception desk in the front of my dorm building, mainly because I'd basically be getting paid to play around on here all day.

Damn you and your computer access. We finally got computers at work, for writing up progress notes of clients etc, and they're so restricted you can't do anything but that on them. They came with those generic windows games like solitaire etc and we used to play those after all our clients were in bed like on night shift etc when theres NOTHING that needs doing... management stuck a note to the desk explaining how we're here to care for people and anybody caught playing games was going to have their arse kicked. What I wouldn't give for some internet when I'm bored out of my mind at 3am at work.

You work the night shift and they won't let you have any sort of entertainment? That really sucks. The job I had last summer allowed us everything at first, but then gradually cut back until we lost youtube, small games sites, DVDs, then VHS access and at the end we lost access to the coffee machine and water fountain.

It would still have been fine when I brought a book to work, only they cut off the power to the lights to save money and I couldn't read by the light of a computer screen.

Nicole

There's always the option of bringing in your own entertainment. I always think it's some sort of curse, that if you're bringing in your own entertainment you're not going to have much free time at all. Last night shift proved me wrong, I deliberately didn't bring a book because its Murphy's Law, the Registered Nurse and I were running around from 2215 right through to 0700 just nonstop. Surprised I got home okay and didn't veer off the road.

Your workplace sounds more tight than mine. Lights? Ha. That's just messed up.

If I get that reception job I want, I'll probably end up working night shifts. Since nobody at college wants to work a night shift, they pay 15 dollars an hour, and you get to watch TV, play on the computer/internet, listen to music, play guitar, and basically everything you could possibly do at the desk other than masturbate. It's a sweet gig.

Yeah, I eventually ended up bring my laptop, so it was fine. And the guy I shared the night shift with figured out one of the great advantages to running support for a long-distance phone network - we can call places!

I like my jobs, because I never get bored where I'd even want to go online or watch TV. I used to have a job where I spent all day online and socializing with my coworkers... it was great when I was in college, but now I can't stand such mind numbing work. I need to have a job where I'm doing stuff/bettering myself or others/learning/something. One of my jobs unfortunately doesn't really better myself or teach me anything, but at least I'm busy and active and making $20/hr... but the other one is constant learning, bettering people's lives, etc... and for $30/hr. I can't imagine going back to the days of work where I have to find ways to keep myself entertained and otherwise find the work so incredibly meaningless and boring.

edit: sorry, I skipped the POINT of the thread. So glad to see you back, Dave!! And that things are going well. :)

aha. i get bored at work somewhat often, and i have a pretty fun job. the thing with it is that there's either a *shitload* to do at once, and tons of requests coming in... like, no time for lunch... or it's incredibly slow with nothing to do, so i end up fucking around on the internets. :]

02-22-2008, 02:56 PM
hehe, well that's a little more tolerable (I don't know if that was in response to my post or not). For me, my one job is going to teach an hour long class and getting $25-40 for that hour. Obviously I'm not going to get bored or have downtime in that hour. My other job is serving. When it's busy, I make tons of money and have no time to be bored. When it's dead and there's a chance to get bored, I get to go home instead and don't have to worry about that.

Well, I'm just about to be off to work a Saturday because we're understaffed and have to get all of our stock on Amazon.co.uk within like, a week. Fun times. On the plus side, I got to set up a server yesterday, which I'll be able to tinker with today because I'll be alone all but for my fellow IT guy.

Just a generic office data-entry thing. Just something to tide me over 'till I get an IT job.

Where do you work, and what kind of IT job are you after? If you're anything like me, the jobs might come to you. My last two jobs, I went in as a basic data entry monkey, and I've ended up in IT. My current job, for example, turned from listing stuff on eBay (sounds awesome, but it's very numbing and repetative) to being the firm's programmer/web designer/graphic designer/IT manager. You just have to be good at that kind of stuff, do it without asking and hope people appreciate it and say, "Wow, you rock."

Us standard grunts at my work have zero net access, because they're scared we might put the companies IP on the internets when it's not finished etc...

When I worked at amazon in a very mundange job I could look at anything, probably even porn if I'd tried, due to having to look up porn DVD/VHS titles up sometimes at competitor websites.

Not at all, it was never an exciting job, interesting for seeing trends of items being sold and how they track prices on competitors websites (when I worked there, some sites in the US that amazon tracked actually sent out false prices to their robots grabbing the prices.) It was also very tempting to print out messages to printers in their worldwide network.

Smash Punker, you're a retard. And the sad thing is, I meet people like you all the time. People that think the quality of the games companies release is a direct, personal insult against their way of life.

It's not, you are not that important. If EA wants to release "The Adventures of Einstein: Relativity, LA Style", they have every right to do so. You went out and bought these games, obviously spending Ģ25-30 more than you should/would have, had you waited a year 'till all the rich kids had got their daddies to buy it and the price had slumped. You also obviously didn't wait at least a day and read some reviews of it. You also obviously have some deep-seated issue because you hit your computer when you don't like games.

Alright nightbringer. First Iīm not fucking rich, every fucking expensive game had to buy myself! First I read the rating and then deciding. That little bit wasn't needed ;)

I demand more Sims hate from people complaining about EA. It's always just generic 'bad games' and same re-iteration of sports games every year with updated teams. I don't recall when I read anyone complaining about the sims in any threads bashing EA.

If you want to hate developers/publishers because 'insert reason for it being a crap game here' you should start with the first parties (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) as they are the ones that allowed the so called terrible game to be published. Every console game has to go through submission with them and if it's not good (they have set criteria for this) then it gets rejected by them until it is in a state they are happy with to be released.

*edit: The last two additions, Bioware and Pandemic, were definitely tiny developers, it only cost them 1.2 billion to buy them, anyone could afford that. The developers either have to accept the sums offered by EA if they're independently owned or know that there is the possible risk of them being bought out by a larger company if they float on a stock exchange.

Nicole
02-28-2008, 09:15 PM
I will defend you on one point- EA games are dodgy, they try to push the releases through too quick and it shows, instead of halting putting things on the market to iron out problems they would rather meet a deadline and keep their workers overworked so they end up putting out something that just isn't quite right.
