Why? Have they been cracking down on Limewire users lately? I don't have it, but this question is out of sheer curiosity.

Endymion

don't be an idiot. limewire is a piece of shit client on a shitty network. anything you want can be better found through other means.

Buy cd's. Having a cd collection so much cooler than a bunch of names on a screen.

Or use bittorrents or something.

In my opinion, no one should be using Limewire ever because it's a piece of shit.

I enjoy using Soulseek, Xfactor, and Acqlite.

When my sister had it on her laptop, it was pure shit. Just about every search had a shitload of porn results and maybe 10 actual mp3 results. Most of the time it wasn't even the right song. She has yet to get rid of it *rolls eyes*.

Endymion
03-30-2008, 02:37 PM
if you want music, soulseek is *the* way to go. it takes a little getting use to (a day or so until it's second nature), but after that you can find almost anything. the only thing possibly slightly better is a very good private bittorrent tracker like oink use to be.

nameless
03-30-2008, 02:42 PM
i thought they were closing that down! anyway, im sure you just end up with loads of viruses from it!

Wolfbutter
03-30-2008, 02:42 PM
Alright, I'll download soulseek, thanks.

But I saw the RIAA said they can track anyone who uses P2P. Is that true?

Endymion
03-30-2008, 02:53 PM
no. they can track anyone who uses p2p and doesn't protect themselves. if you're really paranoid about it, you can use a proxy or tor or something. simple traffic encryption won't work since they track things by connections not actual traffic flow.

Yo, if you're this worried about it, why don't you just use google? I guarantee you can find anything you want through patience and persistence and then you won't have to whine about how nothing works.

I gave up on soulseek a while ago when it would stop giving me results; it worked well for a few years, then just stopped helping me when my searches ventured too far away from what was easy to find.

When I want to exit, should I disconnect or just close? Can I download full albums or does it have to be single songs, where can I find full albums to download? Do I have to do all of this stuff with folders before I get it to work? When I type in the search, it takes a while to even show up, is this normal?

WebDudette
03-30-2008, 05:15 PM
Search isn't instant. You can download full albums by looking at the folder most of the time. To the right of the song title it will say Name/Program Files/Band/Album or something.

Hey guys, I'm gonna get a Toyota Corolla, but I drink Ice Mountain water. Is that compatible, or do I need to switch to Aquafina?

I use utorrent. Best program I've ever tried. I love how many sites there are to search on, making the chances of finding anything I might want likely.

JohnnyNemesis

torrents are great, but theyre not very practical for finding individual songs, especially one that isnt ridiculously popular.

im in a private irc network, i use private torrent sites. rip oink :\ still trying to get into couple of good sites that have replaced it, best ways to get good music. still having trouble finding this ladysmith black mambazo cd though

wolfy,

soulseek works much like good ol' napster. when you search for a song, it finds each copy on the network. if you want an album, search for the artist's name or the album name. once a bunch of results show up, look for someone who has the whole album and then right click on one of the files and press "download containing folder" or something like that. then you'll be place into that user's queue and when they have a download spot ready you'll begin downloading the album from them. yes, this means that if they disconnect you need to find a new source. some people also ban people who aren't sharing files. this also means you're limited to whatever speed the other person can upload at. yes, these are the prices we pay to have 99% of the music ever recorded available to us.

Do you use windows XP or Vista? Apparently the later service packs for XP put something in place where it limits the amount of connections your pc can make in a certain amount of time, supposedly as a security thing trying to stop the spread of worms, but it seriously screws up P2P sites and torrents too. I had the problem with Soulseek not returning any results when I first got my laptop with Vista but there's ways around it. Soulseek's site has a link to an article/download you can put in place which works perfectly.

I was using XP, then Mac OSX. It wasn't really the amount of downloads; I just stopped getting results, or people would constantly disconnect on me, which drove me crazy. Plus, I put up all my albums for download, so it was taxing on my computer. I find leeching off the internet works unbelievably well. Were you aware that many webforums have music sharing threads? The one for Questionable Content is where I get, like, 90% of the music I download.

Wolfbutter

Hey coke, what do you put in Google to search for? "song.mp3", or something?

coke_a_holic
03-31-2008, 07:57 PM
I got for full albums, but you could try this, thanks to youtube:

"intitle:"index.of" (mp3) song.name -asp -htm -html -cf -jsp" without quotes, though it's not as likely to find the music as it used to be.

If you want a full album, just search:

"band name or album name site:mediafire.com" without quotes

I also just lurk on other message boards that have music sharing threads and www.robinhoodofindiemusic2.blogspot.com

EDIT: lulz, Robin Hood has been taken down by The Man. Oh well.
