Like, for peeing the term would be "urinating". What would it be for pooping?

Defecation presents a rather interesting tic in linguistics, in which we appear unable to coin a term that isn't purely medical ("having a bowel movement", "defecating"), childish ("pooing" "pooping"), euphemistic ("going to the bathroom") or crude ("crapping", "shitting"). There isn't a common, everyday term for it. It's a process that has actively resisted a "regular" term (pun unintended).

I thought the process had a perfectly acceptable name but the product of said process is where the linguistic tic lies. No?

^Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.

It's funny how even "defecating" carries some pretty rude connotations with it. There's just no way to announce that you're going to do "twosies" without it raising a few eyebrows.

I was thinking of this yesterday. Dane Cook is being sued/possibly evicted by his landlord because his dog shits in public areas and Dane doesn't clean it up (allegedly). I was watching TMZ and they were reading some testimony from the trial....and everyone is saying, "poo," "pooing," etc. I was fairly amused because, hey, it's court and all these witnesses and experts are saying "poo." All I could think was, "there HAS to be something better they could say."

Feces! They could just say feces! Ahhh!

In almost all cases I say 'I am going to use the restroom' or 'I need to use the restroom'. If I don't say that then I proclaim 'I AM TAKING A SHIT!'.

So yeah, I'm not at all helpful.

What Pilz said...

A simple "I'm off to the toilet" suffices.

Even though the term isn't used wholly for faeces, 'excreting' is fine.

Actually, excretion only refers to urine. Excretion = urinary system. Elimination = digestive system. Sorry, I'm a nerd.

I have a friend who just says she's going to unload.

To excrete is to have any bodily fluid escape from the body in any manner (i.e. your sinuses excrete mucus... tough to find one that doesn't make people shudder). I'm into the whole medical thing. That helps when one is an EMT.

Deficate just sounds so dirty. Somebody says it and everyone scrunches their nose and closes that person out of the circle. I don't think there is a universally non-offensive term out there for such an important bodily function.

I'm not a native english speaker and I don't live in an English speaker country.

But, maybe you guys could say "Hey, I'm going to get your toilet a little bit of my DNA. Be right back"

Unfunny joke :(

that's because "pooping" is seen as a childish term. pooping just IS the common every day word for it. because it's nasty business, it's just became a forbidden word. like farting, peeing, sex. none of those terms sound neutral, because we tend to visualise (except in the case of farting) too much.

Oh by the way: I hate hate hate it when people say "passing wind" or "passing gas." It just sounds so froo-froo and it makes me cringe. Man up, you pussies! Say I gotta let one rip! And if they don't like it then they can fuck themselves!

YOU ARE NOT IMPORTANT ENOUGH FOR ME TO BE HOLDING IT IN IN FRONT OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

when my mother needs to go when in company, she often says; "just checking if my coat's still there!", as some kind of joke. some people dig the way she excuses herself to go to the toilet, some don't. what I do know, is that I seriously hate explaining people she had to pee, every time she's left after saying that. usually, when people are raising brows, I say it as straight forward as I can, to undo the exaggerated euphemism of my mother & say she's taking a piss.

Feces! They could just say feces! Ahhh!

does a verb of that word exist? feciating??

or,

if you needed to say you needed to pee in a politically correct way, you may say; "one feels the inclination to pass urine". so why not say: "one feels the inclination to pass feces"?

Actually, I think "defecation" is the word you're looking for. And with that, we've come full circle in this thread.

the correct term for pooping is the following,

"Dropping the kids off at the pool"

And if you're constipated you would say

"One of the kids got stuck in the van"

Nobody needs to know what I (have to) do when I go to the bathroom. So "I need to go to the bathroom" is way enough.

But in Brazil, when you're talking to family/extremely close friends you could say you're going to do "Number 2".

Dookie, as coined by GreenDay.

I'm pretty sure Green Day didn't coin that term.

OH MY GOD, people who say; "sorry, gotta go, nature's call!" I just want to strangle with a rubber band while choking them with a pillow & chopping their head off. AWFUL, what are you thinking? just, go die.

I personally prefer to say "washroom". Because no one else does.

I like it when Europeans call it "toilet". One time, I finished my water bottle and wanted more. My friend said, "Why don't you go fill it up in the Toilet?" I lol'd and was initially really grossed out for a split second before I realized she didn't literally mean I should dip the bottle in the toilet.
