View Full Version : Does anyone not have a mobile phone?

I don't, i guess the older you get the more likely it is you have one, with exceptions obviously.
I think it's ridiculous for 10 year olds to have mobile phones, which there are plenty of here. The only reason you NEED a mobile phone is if you are travelling constantly say, to work or school, and have one handy in case of an emergency or such.
I live in Australia which has one of the highest mobile phone to population ratios in the world, higher than the USA. In fact i think there are more mobile phones in Australia than there are people.
Thoughts on the subject?

Well these days you can find a mobile phone for 20$, it's not fancy, but you can call and send messages. Mobile phones come in handy in an emergency situation, they can be also used as computers. I for example have an hour to the college and back, and since all of my literature is in a digital form, I transfer it on my phone and study. Also effective when cheating on a test. But basically all you need is the phone calls and the messages. I think it's kind of ridiculous to find phones today that cost 1000 or even 2000$. That's just sick. But the emergency part is pretty solid, you can call for help if you heed some, but then again you don't see people carrying helmet+kevlar in case of an emergency. It's a great tool to stay in touch with friends and familly, good for ogranisation, saves time...I don't know why you resist the cellphones, I hope it's not just some kind of anrchyist bad boy theme, you know...like you don't want it just becouse everyone else has it, you being unique. I hope you're not denying your self the advantages of an cellphone just becouse of principles.

Well i do carry a slight anti-trend personality, but there really is no need for me to have one, i might need one next year when i'm travelling further for school, but i definatey dont give a crap about phones with cameras, mp3 players, videos, photos and all that stuff.
I have a 160gb ipod which i use basically as a portable external hardrive, it's extremely handy for school because i can just carry it around in my pocket all the time. But i still use it for music a lot too.

i basically agree with sipptaroowsky. if you don't have a cell phone because you genuinely don't need one, then hey, cool. if you don't have one because you don't want to be a conformist, then you're most likely a grade A toolbox.

that being said, i'm one of those people who loves phones who do everything: take pictures, go online, play music, etc. i know it's not cool for some reason, but i don't really care. =)

Yay, this applies to me! I don't, nor have I ever had one. I'm sure it has been said time and time again, but I don't like the idea of being contacted wherever I am. I require a lot of me time, and I think I'd be a lot less amiable if I were bothered all the time. I do need one, though, for emergencies. I drive into the middle of nowhere 5 nights a week, between 1-4 am.

Well you could turn it off when you're not using it. I didn't have phone for a long time since I didn't need one, then I wanted an mp3 player, was among the first in school that had it, then you need a calculator for greater math,. I got addicted to final fantasy in the meanwhile, so I wanted to buy a GBA, sometimes I'm just bored at school so instead of sleeping at class I turn on some star trek, so instead of dragging all that crap in millions of pockets I just bought a good enough phone,. I think the fact that some people don't have a cell phone but have a portable camera for tourist walks, a camera for birthdays and parties, an iPod for those booooring office hours, is kind of ...dammit I forgot what I was gonna say,.

I have a cell phone. I took one of those apple stickers that came with my ipod and stuck it on my cell phone. Now I spend my free time trying to convince people it's an Iphone.

Except the sticker started to peel a little bit. That sucks.

Are you reffering to the BBS or your hometown? Because there are no 10 year olds here...

Wrong. Ever heard of having a social life? People may not always be in thier house to use/answer a phone.

Also reffering back to what you said about younger people having them, and the emergencies situation..

Don't you think its better for younger people to have them, ya know, seen as young people are more likley to get lost/into trouble etc?

It's the same thing I do. Whenever my friends would compare features on their cell phones (which used to be fairly often), I'd be the one who's always like "well, mine can call people!".

The thing I hate the most about owning one myself is that people expect me to always answer it. I barely ever answer my phone, and people constantly yell at me for "screening my calls", etc. I really just don't answer my phone unless I'm expecting a call from someone for a certain reason. My phone's always on silent, and I let people leave a message if they want to tell me something. I hate talking on the phone, too.

The cultural aspects get on my nerves, too. I hate it when people talk on the phone while driving. If you're stuck in rush hour traffic, that's one thing. But it seems like 90% of the times I get cut off by someone or almost hit, the other person is on their phone. Other pet peeves include, being a waitress, people who expect you to take their order while they're on their phone. People going through the check out at the store while on they're on the phone. It's just obnoxious.

I have no problem with cell phones in general, but people need to know when not to use them and not expect everyone else to LOOOOOVE them as much as they do. :P

I have to have one for my job and so family can get a hold of me. In fact, my mother has not had a land line in over two years and just has her cell phone.

Cell phones are handy as hell. Picture ability in case something catches your eye, daily planner in your pocket (with reminders), and the ability to get a hold of someone almost anywhere.

no i'm just genuinely interested. I'm not going to go ahead and link to some site where you can buy phones or anything, or if you meant the opposite i dunno.
And whoever it was that asked i was talking about 10 year olds in my town. Some of you bring up some good points, but mainly i just think it's stupid for thse people who are OBSESSED with their phone, like going way past being social and that, it may as well be glued to their palm.

Yes cellphones are handy in fact they are so handy that the German word for them is "Handy".

I think. That might also be the German word for dildo, it was something like that* at least.

Then I moved to a country where I couldn't speak the local language, talking on the phone seemed like much less of a communication problem.

I don't have one since I have absolutely no need for one.
I'm sick of all the cellphone commercialism though, it's basically promoted as
something you absolutely need when we've been living without them and
doing fine only about ten years ago. This whole technological race is a disgrace.

Most of the people in Brazil still have land line even if they leave by themselves. Talking on mobile phones is waaaaaaay expensive. So they really only use it for work or emergencies. Talking about life on mobiles is like something can never happen if you don't want to spend lots of money in bills.

I'm happy though with the system here. There are a lot of good deals that allow you to talk and text message a lot.

I have no idea about other countries, but in Germany it is illegal to drive and talk on the phone. And just a few days ago I read somewhere that it is far more dangerous to talk on the phone (even with headphones or whatever) than drunk drive. No idea how true that is but it made me think.

I really, REALLY hate it when people make orders or anything similar while talking on the phone. I think it's insanely rude.

Don't be a douche. Sure, we all got on alright 10 years ago - you plan to meet someone at a certain time, and they don't show up. You go to a payphone, pay to call their landline (if they have one) and they're not answering. Are they on their way? Have they forgotten? Or.. wait a minute.. while you went off to call them, did they get to the place you were supposed to meet them, assume you hadn't come, and gone home?

I don't care what anyone says, mobiles are something that have made life infinitely - infinitely - easier. So 10 year olds have mobiles. Big deal, they wanna talk to their friends. Sure, they have nothing to talk about. But who cares? They're socialising. Deal with it.

And I'm with Sunny. I personally don't have a phone with all the SatNav stuff on it - I don't drive, I don't need it - but I tell you, if I could afford it, I'd have a phone with calls, texts, music, camera, videocamera, SatNav, another mp3 player in case the first one broke down, microwave and my own personal ion cannon. Cos you know what? We've made a device that has (most) of that technology, that fits in the palm of your hand. Incredible.

Nina
07-15-2008, 11:31 AM
The downside of that, though, is when your mobile is broken and you have to send it in, you are without a digital camera, mp3-player and microwave. That is my biggest fear and the main reason I like simple phones best.

Another thing is, I am extremely annoyed with braggy people and their stupid phones. Okay you have an iphone, good for you, really. But dont start ~laughing~ at mine just because it's a regular phone. jeez. Too many of those walk around here.

i can't really go anywhere without my phone, because if my car breaks down or something, i'm totally screwed. i can't say for other cities, but around here, finding a pay phone is about as likely as me being given a ferrari for my birthday. right now i've got a really cheap phon on a prepay plan. i had a really cool phone but my dog ate it and the replacement phone. now i have to get a real phone with a contract because thats the only way i'll be able to have one on campus this fall. i just went to orientation and my current phone wouldn't work.

Llamas
07-15-2008, 01:59 PM
Today something happened that made me hate cell phones. Grr.

I left my house before 8am to get to a city that's 40 minutes away by 9am. I expected to get there around 8.30am, MAYBE 8.40am... but for some reason, the city decided that we needed to have construction on every single road possible this summer, and they keep starting more, so any freeway you take is like down to one lane with exits closed. I was leaving the cities (not coming into them) during rush hour, which normally should pose no problem. But I didn't get to said city until 9.05am, thanks to insane traffic.

Well, since I own a cell phone, it is expected of me to call and notify people that I'm going to be late. Normally I would, but because of my eviction situation, I've used 1/3 of my monthly minutes, and it's not even halfway through the month. Plus I hadn't charged my phone and it was about to die (and probably would've died mid-dial). So I didn't call.

What irks me is that, if I did not own a cell phone, there would be absolutely no blame on me. People understand bad traffic happens, and I was only 5 minutes late. However, due to the fact that I own a cell phone, I got the third degree for being late.

tl;dr- I was 5 min late to work and couldn't call to tell them. I got talked to for being late, though if I didn't own a cell, I wouldn't have had to deal with that. :-/

We also, at one time, got along just fine without tvs, automobiles, computers, and the rest of the other stuff he uses daily and doesn't bitch about.

It's just today's world. It's dumb to purposely choose not to keep up with technology, especially when you nitpick and choose which ones are evil, yet not too cumbersome for you to give up.
