When TIME gave their "___ of the year" honors to Bill & Melinda Gates as well as Bono, they called it "Persons of the Year." Why persons instead of people, or monies instead of money?

lol, thanks, i got a good chuckle out of that.

as to the original op question - im sure there's some grammatical or historical reason,

at least thats the answer my english profs (and high school teachers) would give me... though they were probably just blowing off the stupid question from the math nerd so...
