Wow, many mistakes in The Meaning Of Life video. :P But good, fun to listen at!
I'm gonna record some acoustic Offspring covers and upload on youtube, but I don't know when that will be. We'll see. ^^

I already said I like your covers despite the mistakes.
As far as myself doing covers, well, I'm still on that level when you get pissed with the song cos you always have to fail some chord and you can't sing at the same time you play :D

One of the songs is a Guitar only cover I did of Kick Him When He's Down. Obviously, I just did It quick, because i was trying to figure out the static problem (check out the thread in your band called "Recording Question")

Actualy i was thinking if you guys want to collaborate and make some offspring covers together, but no one seems to be interested http://factoryjoe.com/projects/emoticons/images/emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif
I made forums about it at http://offspringbootlegs.info but i see no responce from other users.Anyways... if you want you can go there and check it out.

Im working on "You gonna go far kid" currently. And i need Drum and Bass track.I have recorded the guitars and some temporary vocals. If you are interested i can upload a demo.

I'm defiantly in on some covers :). Once I get the static problem with my recordings figured out.

Also, I don't have a bass or drums. Bass is second nature when you play guitar, but I'm amazed I can play drums. Therefor I can't help on YGGF,K.

Anyone want to do Kick Him When He's down? Check out the demo I did of it (posted above in a zip), and then let me know. Im trying to work on that static problem.

I just recorded a Crossroads guitar demo, and I'm uploading to Rapidshare now.
I actually attempted the solo, and I think I did pretty good. But I mixed it in out of sync. It's not too bad, but it's noticeable.

Will edit with the link in a sec.

EDIT: Crossroads (Guitar only demo)

The "shhhsss" is called "Hiss".You might be getting that for different reasons.

1)Your microphone is too sensitive and captures noise.
2)Your microphone is damaged (maybe its only the cable)
3)Your soundcard sux.

I snuggest you to:
1)Buy another microphone (a cheap mic will do the work but if you want to use a pro mic in low price try the "Shure SM58 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shure_SM58)" or "Shure SM57 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shure_SM57)"They are around 100-150 $.HERE (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Shure-SM58-Mic?sku=270101)is Shure 58 for 99$ (NEW from a store). And Yes! Shure 58 its "The world's most popular vocal mic",everybody use it(even the offspring)! But if you dont want to give that much money just buy a cheaper "Dynamic" mic.
2)Close any doors and windows of your room.
3)Set up the mic aware of your computer or anything else witch make noise.
4)Get your mic closer to your amp.In that way you will capture more amp sound than "hiss"
5)And please compress your WAVs to MP3.

Actually, I don't use a mic. I run a cable from the direst out jack on my amp to the mic jack on my PC. Here's (http://www.offspring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34083) a thread I made about it.

It's been narrowed down to 2 possible reasons:
1. My cable isn't good enough.
2. The program I use doesn't work with this method of recording.

I've been thinking about getting a mic, but first I'm going to buy a new cable, and see if that's the problem. (even if it isn't, it'll be an improvement over the cable I have now anyways) Also I'm gunna try some different programs and see if they make a difference.

I will compress the files to .mp3, but since I was just trying to figure out what's up with the hiss, I figured people would just listen to it, and delete it. So I figured it didn't matter at this point.

EDIT: My sister has an Apex 381. Is this a good mic?

Just listened to your recording and I can tell you that it's not the cable.
Your amp-L/O sends the signal on a level your soundcard isn't made for.
If you have a line-in in your soundcard, try using that one instead of the mic-in.
But I don't think it'll sound that much better.
You probalbe won't get any better results with your method, especially since most line-outs are far inferior in sound to direct recording through microfone.

Btw, it may as well be that you're gonna kill your soundcard if you use the wrong input-levels too often.

Shank asked for this. This time it is an mp3. But my guitar cuts out for a sec because the cable going to my pedal is kinda broken and I stepped on the connecting end. :/

Its happened to me before. The fix was a proper cable. It can't hurt to try. A proper cable would regulate the input to the computer and the cable wouldn't be overloaded. I've been there. I can't hurt to try anyways.

EDIT: I'm working on some acoustic stuff that i'll upload at some point. I've made a breakdown recording of YGGFK but ihave to wait until I can go out to my dads (where all the decent amps, the bass, and the drums are) so i can do a real recording of it. that may be a while however because I was gonna do it this weekend but I didn't have time and so my next opportunity won't be for at least a month.

Thanks. Yeah, I was planning on doing some more. Once I'm done moving my crap into my dorm. It had been forever since I played that song. Usually my sister and I do it together so I'm not used to having to play one at a time.

I was thinking of doing Defy You and maybe Gone Away cause they work well on acoustic. Any suggestions?

I'd be interested in playing anything on some covers if anyone is still planning on it. I've been playing drums for 13 years so are my main instrument but I play a bit of guitar and bass too. I'm hoping to invest in an electronic kit in the next few months as I'm going to uni and can't take my acoustic kit with me (:(). So yeah, if anyone has anything they want added to then let me know :)

Great covers guys and girls :D

Here is my Defy You "cover". The playing is better on this one than on Dirty Magic cause I play this song more. I also added some echo to the guitar part to clean up how my playing sounds. The same thing The Offspring does for its acoustic covers.

haha! thanks. My playing is much better on defy you.

EDIT: I've been listening to my own recordings... I hadn't realized how much my voice has changed. I really like it now. The first time I recorded the vocals for Defy You though, it was pretty painful. I think what I finally settled on was the third try...

Heheh. I liked the vocals on Dirty Magic best, but Defy You was also good.

Try it! Try to cover Gone Away. It's a beautifull song, and your voice should fit in perfectly. I absolutley think you can do it without the drums. If not, listen to it on you'r mp3 or something while playing? :)

I can play pretty much every song... but there's defiantly some I'm more farmiliar with.

So sk8rocka, remember that program you recommended me and it didn't make a difference? Well, I went to try and actually record something, but afterwards I realized there was this sort of squeaky noise in the backround that wouldn't go away. I used the program you told me to, and it almost completely went away, enough so that if I turn it up a bit it will mask it out.

It's an overdrive pedal. The Offspring use Tube Screamers too, but I don't know whether they use this model. It's the one I have though.

So, I just did a cover of Dirty Magic myself (cause it seems like everyone else did).

About the SMTD cover, I'm still working out a method to capture the acoustic (its coming out very quiet), so I may not get a cover up 'till tomorrow.

yeh i know ive been messing around with my amp and it was fucked 4 a while. but im using my good mic and i fixed my amp settings.

here is my end of the line cover on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk_wgPVtqMM

i recored it with my camera with the original song in the backround. but while it was recording with my camera i also recorded it with my microphone at the same time, so when i uploaded it to the computer i deleated the sound from from the film clip (quality wasnt great) so i added the song and my recoding to the film clip so it synced perfectly, and thats how it turned out.

Don't know why, but their songs are just cool to cover... pretty easy to figure out and play and with great melodies.

Don't know what I'll do next though. Maybe Gotta Get Away or All I Want...

It's a good thing to see a cover of not-so-good-known song, I appreciate that, you know, people prefer to make covers of the most popular songs.

I think a Hammerhead or Have You Ever cover would be great since both songs are pretty long, have 2 different tempo parts, awesome vocal lines and choruses. I can imagine that they'd sound great in the way you do covers. I think Have You Ever would be slightly better, but I don't mind to listen both songs ;) .

Sounds good. We'll find out if I can actually hit the end parts of the bridge. I spent the summer getting control of my semi-scream type voice in order to do it. We'll find out.

The scream thing can be difficult. Especially at my age. One time while playing guitar along to Hammerhead, and also singing. I coulda sworn my ears were bleeding lol... now I have more control of my voice but always just sing that part.

While I was practicing guitar for tomorrow (since I hadn't played hammerhead in a while, and needed to relearn the intro), I came up with a pretty cool riff. I recorded it and as I went along made up some more riffs, which I plan on organizing tomorrow, since right now they're basically jumbled together. And I sparked an idea.

could you do bass lines in mp3 format?

I could do it in pretty much any format, so long as I had the rhythm track to sync it up to.

mp3 would be the easiest for me to deal with. I'll do the mixing for now since i already have to do a lot of balancing for the vocal tracks.

Somehow the intro seems to be shorter than in the real song (even though I was playing along to it), but since the Bass starts after the intro it shouldn't matter. Static you should still record to my recording just to be safe though.

Yea, but if you're not planning to modify either of the channels, then it's really better that way. Or, you can record it in stereo and then downmix to mono. It just takes less time to upload/download such files. Anyway, guess I'm being too picky, just do as you wish! ;P

Alright, I have an mp3 of the bass line rigged and ready to go. There are a couple of minor mistakes, but once you have the drums in there it shouldn't show through (it never does on any of my band's recordings, anyway). I don't know how to upload it to rapidshare or anything, so can I just email it to somebody?

P.S. There was a minor chord difference in the guitar version you recorded, I don't know if you did it on purpose or not. But during the bridge (Through this doorway, what's on the other side?"), you went C#, E, D#, back to C#, and then G#. It should have been C#-E-D#-B-G#. Doesn't matter, though, unless you were trying to emulate the original recording exactly. I went ahead and played along to that.

EDIT: By "that" I mean your recording, of course.

Ryder1234
08-28-2008, 06:23 PM
Yeah I was getting it exactly. Believe it or not I don't even know chords (well I do, but I couldn't tell you the names), cause I'm 100% self taught, so I just play whatever sounds right.

For rapidshare, just go to www.rapidshare.com, and you'll see a bar (like the ones you type stuff into), with a button that says brows beside it. Click it, it'll open a browse box, so go and find the file on your PC, and double click it. Then a button that says upload should appear. Wait till it's done, take the link it gives you, and paste it here :)

I'm about 70% self-taught, myself 0_0 I used a guidebook to learn basic chords (not even scales or riffs; that put me back a year or so), but I got bored with the slow pace and started teaching myself Ramones songs :) It's way more fun to learn by yourself, I think, and it also gives you more of a feeling of accomplishment.

Dere ya go! If it's too sloppy, I can do it again tomorrow after work. I think it's basically alright, but like I said, the mistakes I made can show through without a good backing drumline. Plus, it's kind of hard for me to sync up to a guitar line with no percussive backdrop---I usually lay down drums before anything else, then just sync up the bass/guitar/vox to that. But this should do for now, I suppose(?).

Static_Martyr
08-28-2008, 06:47 PM
Maybe I can run some noise reduction on it? I'm not sure. Most of my stuff sounds pretty shitty anyway (because I have one decent mike and Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and nothing else), but I might be able to dress it up a little.

EDIT: During the guitar parts, you can hear the guitar in the background (because I had to crank it up to hear it and keep time right). Could that be what you're hearing?

EDIT AGAIN: If you put them together, it's not quite as noticeable.

EDIT ONE MORE TIME: Ah, dammit. I can't really do anything around the static. Now that you mentioned it, I can't not hear it, ya know? That's the best I can manage at the moment. Maybe somebody else can fix it up a little?

Hmm. If that's the case, then I might be able to fix it; in Cool Edit, all the tracks in Multitrack view have to be the same wavelength/frequency, which for this file is 14100 (I believe). That's the standard mp3 configuration for Cool Edit. So in order to play along, I either need to re-save the original play-along track (the guitar) in a different frequency and slightly worse quality, then do the bass track over again in that frequency. Then I can reconfigure them back to 14100 and upload 'em. If you want, I can do that after work tomorrow, see if it does any good?

P.S. Thanks (about the good playing) :)

The bass is perfect as it is IMO. I think after the bass solos though, my guitar comes in almost to abrupt, it may need a very slight fade in. Although the "Hey, go!" may hide it.

Fuck this is gonna be sweet. I hope we can do a bit more about the static. It's not really a problem until the bass track ends but the guitar feedback is still going, it just cuts out and sounds awkward.

cool beans. Progress has been made tonight.
May I give some pieces of advice?
The single tracks are out of timing on some parts and adding the tracks up worsens the off-timing.
I'd recommend recording to a click/metronome with a predifened tempo. Playing along with the actual song (hey that rhymes ) blurrs your mistakes. They may not sound that bad on each single track, but if you bring them together it will get worse.
So chose a tempo (I'm also recording Hammerhead currently - 154/155bpm seems to be the original tempo) and get a rhythm-track on that one. Usually it's drums, but since you don't seem to have a drummer, you may want to play the bass-part first. When you have that track perfectly on click add the guitar tracks and finally vocals.
Also I wouldn't send the files as mp3. It may take a while longer to upload, but use wav-files for the single tracks. It will be rewarding once you're mixing it down.
It depends on the quality you want to achieve, but I'd also send the guitar tracks independently and not pre-mixing them. It may be necessary to regulate the level of the single guitar parts in the final mix.

So, hope that helps a bit - good luck to you guys. I'm looking forward to the final song! If I can help at any point, just let me know :)

Edit: Oh, btw - They seem to have recorded the song in Eb-tuning, if that's any help to you. Especially the bass-part after the bridge can be played a bit more thight that way.

I can see what you mean. Maybe when we get a volunteer for the drums, we can play with it a little more. I was getting closer to 150 for the tempo, but I wasn't trying to be all that accurate when I was doing it yesterday.

Hey, your voice sounds really good. To be honest I didn't expect too much, but I certainly was proven wrong ;)
I'm sure with some time to record the lines it will sound great.

You said it yourself, the mic clipps sometimes and the timing isn't 100%, but to give an idea of your voice it sounds good.
Do you have any experience in recording vocals? If not, I may be able to give you some hints to improve the quality :)

So, to catch the Hammerhead-wave, I'll upload a demo version of my cover.

I'm going to upload it, and send you a link so you can reduce the static, then you can send it back to me, and I'll mix it into the song and send it to Karin so she can mix it all together again. :) Im uploading now
Wow sounds like a logistical nightmare :D

Well, last upload for today. Tomorrow I'll finish it if I find the time.
Meanwhile I played a bit with different sounds, but I'm still not truely satisfied.
Any oppinions/comments?

Getting back onto the topic for a moment:

http://rapidshare.com/files/141142151/The_Kids_Aren_t_Alright__Offspring_Cover_.mp3.html

These are the ones my band has recorded. Well, actually, these were just me 0_0 My singer doesn't like to do melodies, so anything with a tune, I pretty much have to do myself. I play guitar and bass, sing, and operate the drum machine. Beware, though --- if you're used to high-quality, well-produced stuff, you might be disappointed. These are bedroom recordings at best -_-

To contribute myself, I did a Nothingtown instrumental a few days ago.

The timing is a bit off, because of my terrible sound card.

Thanks :) That's a relief, because I was so afraid of fucking up my favorite song on the new album....0_0

Anyway, I was just on my way over here to post the finished version of Half-Truism:

ooh! now I know your real world name!

sounds pretty good. You need to back up from the mic about half a foot, that should reduce the overloading there. but otherwise its pretty good.

Yeah, I usually go by "Tim D." on the internet. No last name, for obvious reasons 0_0

I'm trying to work on that, but it's such a terrible habit....I close in on it without realizing it. Steve does the same thing, except he tends to get farther away instead of closer. Which is better, I suppose, since it's easier to boost sound up than it is to cut back overload.

Good demo, but you've set a higher plank with your previous covers :) . Add some vocal / backvocal lines to complete it ;)!

I've been willing to record the whole Rise And Fall, Rage And Grace album instrumentally.
I have even talked to some friends of mine about it, and they really liked the idea.
I'll probably be recording the guitars for Half Truism and Trust In You in the next few days with a friend of mine.
Does anyone want to help?

I've been working on a similar project, myself. So far, I've finished or contributed to the following tracks:

Half-Truism
Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?
Hammerhead

I plan on doing my own full versions of the following songs over the next week or two:

Trust In You
You're Gonna Go Far, Kid
Nothingtown

I'm probably not going to do the whole album, though. Just the ones that, when I hear them, make me want to play them like right the fuck now.

EDIT: The point of me posting this being, sure, I'll contribute to your cause, so long as it's not one of those songs....because it's a bitch to record the parts just once; doing it twice is murder 0_0

EDIT AGAIN: I just finished YGGFK. Here it is.

http://rapidshare.com/files/141391592/You_re_Gonna_Go_Far__Kid.mp3.html

I know it still sounds like shit. I'm working on the mike situation (the vocals keep getting distorted), trying different positions and distances and whatnot. I kind of have to alternate distance between myself and the mike while recording, getting close for the quiet parts and backing up for the loud ones. It's kind of awkward, and a lot of times I get lost in the song (trying to keep up with the lyrics and everything) and I forget to keep an eye on how close I am. So just take solace in knowing that, while things are not perfect yet, they are being improved upon with each "shitty" cover I record :)

I'd be stoked to give it a listen, but is there any way you can maybe mp3 it? 30+ MB is kind of big, and with my shitty internet I have a 200MB/day cap on my bandwidth.

EDIT: I gave it a listen. The drums sound really full, unlike my stuff -_- Is that a real kit, or a program? And did you do the solo? I couldn't quite tell because of the mix, but I didn't hear it in there.

Hey everyone who makes Offspring covers check this RAFRAG covers' thread (http://www.offspring.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1179034#post1179034). You might regret later if you will not do it now ;)

It really depends on the circumstance. To be honest, i don't really know a damn thing about recording. But i do know A LOT about performance. Live, you actually want to be doing exactly what you're doing. Well really its the same for recording if you know how to reduce the mic sensitivity. The more you give the people on the board, the better they can make you sound. But if you can't reduce the sensitivity, you need to back off a bit.

My point being that the closer you are to the mic, the better (under most circumstances.) But for your circumstance, your best bet would be just to back off a bit when you're trying to record.

Yah, that's the philosophy I'm operating under at the moment. Like I said, it's easier for me to increase low volumes to the point of audibility than it is to remove/add frequencies to an overloaded segment to the point at which it doesn't grate one's ears to listen to.

In any case, I liked your vox on Hammerhead. Would you might be interested in doing O.C. Life, or do you know that song at all? Because I've been working on a backing track for it that I just finished (no vocals at the moment):

http://rapidshare.com/files/141937015/The_O.C._Life__instrumental_.mp3.html

I was thinking about recording it with Steve for our band, but it's gonna be a couple of days before we get back together (and I can do that anyway). So in the meantime, I figgered I'd pitch it to one of you guys for that comp thing we're doing in the topic Free? posted a couple posts ago.

EDIT: ok I was finally able to find it.

EDIT: Now i'm having a hard time finding complete lyrics
