Wheelchairmaniacal and Tizzalicious just got one of those internet movie subscription rental things. It seemed like a good idea at the time and we were quite excited. However when it came down to choosing films both our minds went completely blank. (well we must have something like 30 listed but that's after we decided to just look up our favorite actors, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Nicholas Cage, Jack Nicholson, etc. etc.)

Anyways I was wondering if you guys got some good recommendations. I love action, science fiction, comedy (albeit not romantic comedies, unless Adam Sandler is involved and not being serious), biographical (I guess that's called biopic), dystopian, utopian, historical (accuracy is absolutely not necessary unless they somehow made the plot boring), vampire films, films like 28 Days/Weeks Later, I Am Legend.

Oh and I love almost everything made by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Seagal, and Bruce Willis. (Also a big fan of Paul Verhoeven movies).

Oh and if there any good tv shows out there.

She likes what I like (minus the 3 greats, Arnold, Seagal and Willis), but she really enjoys crappy chick stuff that drags on for hours and hours and makes you want to put out cigarettes in your eyes.

They don't necessarily have to be new films either.

p.s. I already went back to my old time travel thread. :)

hmm I have a whole bunch I'll try to make a list and post it later (but I'm betting you've seen a lot).

In any case on a related note has anyone watched dr. horrible? If you're a fan of firefly or the tv show how i met your mother... yes... you should look up dr. horrible on hulu...

obvious recent movies I've been a fan of are Blood Diamond and The Departed (which i hear is almost a direct copy of a film produced out of Hong Kong? Never seen or heard of that one though).

older war movies are classics too if you haven't seen some, Guns of Navarone, The Great Escape

How about Hitchcock movies?

and as for comedy right now I have to go with the obvious Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz if you haven't seen those. Good parody/homage to zombie/buddy cop movies.

lemme know what you think of these various ones and I'll try to make a more directed list for ya later... (i watch a lot of movies...)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There's talk of actually doing a Twisted Metal movie, but I dunno how they could do it without it being retarded. I mean, the games are some of my favorite video games, but really.

I don't care how stupid Death Race looks. Someone could put out a 2 hour movie that was nothing but a short clip of Jason Statham taking his shirt off looped over and over again and I'd be the first in line to drop some money down for a ticket.

I believe Death Race (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452608/) is a remake of Death Race (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072856/) which spawned a very controversial game called Death Race (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Race).

Endymion

if only it were a simple remake. unfortunately they took the entire plot of running man -- sport in which prisoners on death row can compete in bloody battle on national television to win their pardon.

It would be helpful if some people could include some sort of "teaser/summary" of the plots. Cause it doesn't help much to get a bunch of movies that I never heard of.

The links were a good idea but I'm so deathly afraid of spoilers.

You can view the trailer for May here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303361/trailers-screenplay-vi3919053081). It starts off as more of a black comedy than anything and then slowly evolves into a horror movie as it goes on. It's about a girl who's never really had any friends aside from dolls (who, I feel the need to point out, thankfully never come to life during the movie). She starts out a bit odd obviously, but gets even moreso after a few attempts at reaching out result in pain and decides to build herself a perfect friend.

Martian Child was a really good one if you haven't seen that. Its a John Cusack one where he adopts this really weird kid who thinks he's from Mars. Its a bit mushy but very good anyway.

Junior is one of my favorite arnold movies (he carries and has a baby). Its got Danny Devito as well so its pretty funny.

Once Upon a Time In Mexico is a great Johnny Depp flick. Pretty dark.

The Lost Boys is a great 80s vampire movie. One of my top movies of all time. (They just released a sequel with a 30 year-old Cory Feldman... was one of the worst movies I've seen)

I'd also recommend Terror Train. Its a '79 Jamie Lee Curtis slasher film. Its pretty damn excellent.

The Machinist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361862/)
An industrial worker who hasn't slept in a year and his mind begins to play tricks on him. I want to say it's similar to another movie that everyone ever knows about but it'll kind of give it away. I'll just say it was a VERY good movie and caused me to " OH SHIT WHAT THE FUCK NO WAY" a lot due to surprises I was NOT ready for. Really enjoyable.

The Illusionist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443543/)
Edward Norton plays a magician who was raised in a lower class family, and he later meets a childhood friend whose parents forbade her to see him because she was part of an upper-class family. They fall in love, but the problem is, she's engaged to the crown prince and he's basically a fucking douche. Also, it has Edward Norton in it. Oh, and the movie is pretty good too.

Little Miss Sunshine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0449059/)
This one is just so goddamn adorable and hilarious. A family in New Mexico travels to California in a VW bus. It sounds simple enough, but grampa dies on the way there, among other crazy nonsense they encounter.

The Italian Job (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317740/)
More Edward Norton. But he plays the asshole in this one. This one is basically a group of robbers robbing things. They create the biggest traffic jam ever in LA to pull off one heist, and it's all fast-paced and exciting. Definitely one of the best bank robber-type movies I've seen.

Speaking of bank robbers...
Bandits (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0219965/)
Billy Bob Thorton and Bruce Willis escaped from prison and teamed up to rob banks. The develop a plan which earns them the nickname "Sleepover bandits". They both fall in love with a woman they kidnap and it fucks everything up for a short amount of time.

A little bit more about the movie. There is a police detective that uses not traditional methods of crime investigations... Really can't say more, I'm afraid to spoil :). Unknown actors, great acting, a movie that confuses you in the beginning and you understand everything in the end. The most charming part is that Mad Detective makes you think far more than an average movie does after you've watched it.

Yeah own Serenity and have seen all of Firefly. Pretty good. Not nearly as good as Star Trek TNG or Battlestar Galactica though.

I don't really like musical numbers in shows or movies unless it's done in a campy over the top way, so I think Dr. Horrible won't be my thing.

We watched the Departed recently and loved it. Blood Diamond is on our list. The Departed is based on a Hong Kong movie, not taken. It's intentional. :p

I put Guns of Navarone on a low priority, however I do want to see the Great Escape.

I haven't really given Hitchcock a chance, but I think I would just get bored in comparison with modern techniques. :/

The comedies sound great.

Got all your sci fi, except Equilibrium wasn't available and I'm not sure if I want to see A Scanner Darkly. Although I do like most Phillip K. Dick novels or novellas made into movies. Except I thought Blade Runner was quite slow for most of the time.

Face off is great, will check the other one.

The Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic sound good, already seen or tried to see the other two you mentioned in that paragraph.

There Will Be Blood was added.

Already own Three Kings and like it. :) The other two are check and check.

8 1/2 (aka 8.5) - italian movie about guido who is directing his masterpiece, very post modern and contains a lot of homage scenes

Sounds good but it's in italian and all the subtitles will be in Danish, which excludes Tizz (who doesn't speak a word after living here for two years.)

se7en (although you've likely already seen it) - kevin spacey kills dudes in the manner of the seven deadly sins

videodrome - a new television station controls james woods' mind

The summary actually makes this sound terrible.

bladerunner - harrison ford kills robots

air force one - harrison ford doesn't want somebody on his plane

This was an awesome movie.

bubbleboy - jake gyllenhal lives in a bubble and goes on a hilarious journey to seduce his neighbor

This does sound good, even though Jake Gyllenhaal is annoying.

I know just the crowd for this. (Khaaan).

I have no idea. I think the movie's a lot more effective than the summary makes it out to be, but I let someone at work borrow it once and she said she hated it and laughed the whole way through. The only two other people I can think of that I convinced to see it (one of whom is Jake) liked it. Ebert (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20030606/REVIEWS/306060303/1023) does a better review of it than I ever could.

American Beauty, Christian Bale is crazy and kills people.

Amelie, cute French film, subtitles might be a problem, I don't remember.

The King of Kong, I enjoyed it.

3:10 to Yuma, an awesome (non-crappy) cowboy movie with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

That was American Psycho, but yes, it's awesome.

If it wasn't for the fact that Christian Bale dropped his weight down to 120 for the role, it would've blended in with every other thriller that came out that year.

Nah, The Machinist rules.

*possible spoilers for American Psycho*

Is the ending to the book anywhere near as open as the movie? The movie leaves you not sure as to whether or not he actually committed any of the murders or if it was all in his head, which I liked, but the writer/director/author have said that he does kill all those people and that it was an artistic failure if they failed to convey that which seemed kind of lame.

he definitely kills 'em in the book. the movie is really rather tame by comparison.

as for the ending of the movie, i was always unsure as to if they meant it to mean that it was all in his head, or that happenstance would have it that through random mistakes etc he'd never get caught.

Body building isn't why I like Arnold. I like Arnold for cheesy one liners and kicking ass.

P.s. Tizz and I loved your music, sorry about the lack of feedback. I especially love the Andrew Jackson Jihad.

I know, I know, I wasn't serious! But the movie does contain awesome lines and much ass kicking nonetheless.

Glad you liked the music!

It's hard to recommend movies... a lot have been mentioned... your taste seems a little all over the place. I'm pretty picky about what I like. I'll recommend "Sideways." It's just really good: easy to watch, really funny (and mostly not stupid funny), entertaining characters and dialogue. Depressed dude and about-to-be-married dude go on roadtrip through wine country. Drink lots of wine. Meet ladies. Hilarity ensues.

Jacknife mentioned The Weatherman which was great even though I don't like Nicholas Cage.

The Weatherman (black comedy)

No. Shame on you two. That was not okay. That was not alright. That was a bad thing you did. Recommending that movie. Shame on you.

I watch this movie, the summary sounds pretty good. And that old guy from Cider House Rules is just the greatest actor in the world. And I get 100 minutes of dreary depressing suck. I like black comedies. This was just suck. There was nothing redeeming about the movie. There are maybe 5 scenes worth watching, and my god it is not worth the wait.

You sit there for half an hour thinking "well we've got 30 minutes of his background and life and supposition and exposition and now we'll get to the plot, or some kind of development. Or something. Anything."

Then you think "okay it's been an hour, I'd stop watching but Tizz thinks it might redeem itself, oh hey he finally hit the pedophile."

Then you think "oh it's been 100 minutes and there were only 5 good minutes there, and they were all about punching pedophiles, or talking about punching pedophiles. I can handle movies with no plots but this was like ugh."

Then you think "I'm going to kill anybody who recommended me this godawful film. What were they thinking? Did they actually enjoy that?"

He's talking about this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054033/), not the musical.

I don't know what to recommend, everyone knows I have a bad taste in movies. I'd suggest Cronenberg's films, though. I agree with RickyCrack on The Fly and Videodrome. Eastern Promises is also great. You'd be fine as long as you stay away from A History of Violence. That thing is the most boring film in the world.

I must know lots of chick flicks for Tizz but strangely I can't remember any of them right now. There is Secretary, one of my favourite movies and High Fidelity but I'm sure she's seen it and Only You. That's all I can remember.

Death to Smoochy is a great comedy and lots of people like it, Screwed was also good but no one likes it and my personal favourite is Blazing Saddles but people think it's too old fashioned.

not sure of the name, but there's the movie where arnold fights satan.

You will mean End Of Days i think...
fucking awesome movie...

I would probably recomend Beetlejuice... Purely because its geneous...
And maybe Hellraiser, although, most have probably already seen it...
Generally the old ish horrors are a good watch, Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween, Friday 13th so on and so forth...
Freddy vs. Jason however was dire rubbish... completely wasted about 2 hours of my life watching that...
Doom is fantastic.
Cant go wrong with Series Of Unfortunate Events.
12 Monkeys.
Constantine.
The Prophecy (all three, absolutely brilliant).
White Noise is pretty good.
I also absolutely adore From Hell.
Mind Snatchers is pretty good.
Click is okay if you are in a pretty lighthearted mood.
Generally Zombie films are awesome... my favourites bein Resident Evil and 28 Days later

Those were good examples of bad movies imo :p

End Of Days is ok, even a bit underrated, but definitely not fucking awesome.

Doom is cheesy (I just hate Rock being an actor and that retarded scene when the team was going to a helicopter (or whatever) and they frozen almost in Charlie's Angels poses :D ), it would be great if it would be just cinematics in a game, but not the movie.

Constantine was a disappointment, I actually don't remember what exactly was really bad about the movie, but I definitely remember that it sucked.

Most of zombie movies are cheesy attempts trying to look serious and scare people. Resident Evil gave Milla Jovovich a bad destination to play action heroines in cheesy movies. RE2 in addition had just idiotic humor.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I keep on noticing cheesy moments in most movies and their storylines I watch.
I'm posting this because I honestly think that you shouldn't watch those movies as a priority.

Also check out this Stigmata (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpVU8mr-zMI) music video, it impressed me to watch the movie, I pretty much liked it, I felt weakness during the first 30 mins (because it was late night, I was tired and bored and I'm quite sensitive when I see blood :o , but don't listen to that too much, there's nothing crazy/disgusting just what happened to me back then :)), but in the end I didn't regret of any minute of watching it.

When I saw the title I thought of alooot of great movies I'd recommend, but then I saw what kind of movies you were lokking for, and I had nothing. :(

Donnie Darko or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

They're both pretty good, twisted, and can be hard to understand. Darko is just really dark and Sunshine is a lot brighter. I actually liked Sunshine more.

If I haven't quoted you it means that
a.) I had already seen/own the movie you mentioned before you mentioned it
b.) it hasn't arrived yet

I'm assuming with sci-fi you are already aware of firefly/serenity?

hmm I have a whole bunch I'll try to make a list and post it later (but I'm betting you've seen a lot).

The Departed was very enjoyable. And I'm so happy you recommended Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, those movies are awesome.

Did you know Simon Pegg is going to play Scotty in the upcoming Trek film?

Lola Rennt (eng version of the title "Run Lola Run").
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0130827/
If you haven't seen it, check it out. A criminal drama.

plot from wiki:
A young woman in Germany has twenty minutes to find and bring 100,000 Deutschmarks to her boyfriend before he robs a supermarket
That movie was pretty innovative in 98, running Franka Potente with bright red hair is something you should not miss. There is a strong "late-90's" feeling.
I re-watched it yesterday, it didn't have as big impact as it did back in 99, but still a great movie that should be checked at least once.
