Hmm, In Slovakia it´s not in TOP 20 :( I think it´s because of the stupid video for Hammerhead. I hope next one will be better, ´cause YGGFK is on radio all day and people love it here.

I don't know why they aren't touring in the U.S. right now. It's great that they want a lot of countries to be able to see them, but I think they should tour the U.S. first and then go elsewhere. I'm not just saying that because I live in the U.S. and I want to see them first, it just that it makes more sense from a business perspective.

Maybe, but if albums sales continue to fizzle, they might not even get the chance to release the third single. Like with Splinter.

Look at the section "Reception." RaF,RaG charted higher than both Splinter and Co1, but the sales are barely half of Spinter's and a third of Co1's. It's sold 116,000 copies in the US so far, Co1 did 125,000 it's first week. I don't understand how an album with two #2 singles is faring so poorly on the charts. People aren't buying this great album, they're missing out.

And as far as YGGFK goes, there's no video for it. They should make MTV type videos if they wanna sell more records. Playing shows is great, but not enough!
And they also did a shit job promoting Splinter...they are gonna become less and less popular this way. They should be like the Metallica of punk, instead they are like Anthrax or something. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

FYY: I've been a fan since Smash. I didn't join the party circa Americana.
Ufortunately...although their new found anti-commercial stance is great, the Music Industry doesn't really work like that. So, allow me tell you how it works:
They don't sell enough to be considered a "interesting act" anymore. Splinter didn't even reach platinum status in the US, and it sure as hell didn't do great outside the US. So, if you have a band that sells 9 million (plus) around Smash, and that since CO1 has dropped record sales, that is perceived as a "has been" act. Their last hit record got released in 1998 - ten years ago! They barely passed the 500000 copies of Splinter in the US, it was their first since Smash to only reach gold status. This one is doing even worse and has already been out for a while...what do you think is gonna happen when this one does poorly in sales and the next one does even worse? Columbia will can them. And yes, they can make records on Nitro, but Nitro doesn't have the financial resources to promote the album in the way we are all used to, nor does it have the same resurces for making records...why don't they take advantage of the resources of being in amajor label and shoot fucking stereotyped videos like everyone else???
The way things are going they'll make records that aren't as well produced (cos big producers like getting 10% of records that people actually buy, right?), the distribution will suck outside the US, probably a band member will think "this isn't fun anymore" and leave, the venues they play will get smaller as will the crowds, etc, etc, etc...then maybe, just maybe YOU'LL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT!

This one is doing even worse and has already been out for a while...what do you think is gonna happen when this one does poorly in sales and the next one does even worse? Columbia will can them. And yes, they can make records on Nitro, but Nitro doesn't have the financial resources to promote the album in the way we are all used to, nor does it have the same resurces for recording the album...why don't they take advantage of the resources Columbia has a shoot fucking stereotyped videos like everyone else???
The way things are going they'll make records that aren't as well produced (cos big producers like getting 10% of records that people actually buy, right?), the distribution will suck outside the US, probably a band member will think "this isn't fun anymore" and leave, the venues they play will get smaller as will the crowds, etc, etc, etc...then maybe, just maybe YOU'LL HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT!

YGGFK is only at number 6 on the billboard charts, which was updated today. I thought it would be higher than that, but it's still climbing.

People still buy stuff. The problem is The Offspring are promoting it poorly. The HAMMERHEAD VIDEO SHOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT. They should have made a video that stations would actually play. And as far as YGGFK goes, there's no video for it. They should make MTV type videos if they wanna sell more records. Playing shows is great, but not enough!

I've actually found the oposite. This album has gotten way more promotion then Splinter ever did. And music videos just don't play that big a role in album promotion these days anyways. MTV/Much music rarely play videos anymore, youtube/ myspace are usually the main places where people view them. Hammerhead and You're Gonna Go Far Kid have been getting tons of radio play, featured in video games, and television shows. I barely saw any promotion for Splinter, and the Hit That video was way worse then the Hammerhead video.

The simple fact is the Offspring's core fanbase has been dwindling since 1998. But they still managed a top 10 debut on billboard, that is nothing to be disappointed with. People just aren't buying as much music as they were 5 years ago. Not to mention that the band has been more or less out of the public eye the last couple years.

Seriously though, lets not get too upset over album sales, it has no bearing on your enjoyment of the music, and it's something that is totally out of our control.

As for the band's future, if they did decide to leave Columbia, and still wanted to continue to make music, they'd probably sign to one of the larger punk-indie labels, such as Fat Wreck, or even just decide to self-release. As to the declining size of venues, i don't really care for stadium shows anyways. And your argument about producers not wanting to work with the band due to declining record sales, is just silly.

Budzy
09-18-2008, 10:59 PM
A better video for Your Gonna Go Far Kid, make some more merchandise, sell a few posters and pose in a few more pictures and they'll be right. It's going alright already it, so it should just take off hopefully if they do that.
They are getting on but i think that RFRG has some of their best stuff, like the first 3 tracks, so they still got it in them. They can't make an album sell like Smash did anymore, or even Americana, but i dont see why RFRG cant sell 6 million copies like CO1 did (i think thats how much...) .
And as for the smaller venues, The Offspring are still one of the most influential punk bands of all time, they can still rack up a great crowd no problems, just don't expect Woodstock every single time they play a concert.
Maybe its dexter's hair, i preferred it spiked.

I think you are in denial.

TheOffspring won't last forever. I'm not worried in which label they are in. You will get the CD's anyhow if you are a REAL fan. The MTV stage is gone and I know that it may be difficult to like a band not so popular or that your friends don't really know. All I have to say is, deal with it.

Let me tell you another thing. If labels don't change soon, in some years bands won't need them anymore. So who the fuck defines "interesting acts"? The labels? Or we, the consumers?

I think plenty of you have difficulties about accepting reality. TheOffspring will end sooner or later. Lets enjoy the ride until then.

Doesn't it annoy you to see that they have played a near sold out show on the CO1 tour in Pavilhão Atlântico and now they just play Coliseu dos Recreios?
Doesn't it annoy you that they played the 2nd headlining slot in the RIR festival before fucking Linkin Park?? Oh, and the promoters were considering having them play before Muse as well (Muse are awesome by the way).

I mean, it annoys me!

And no, they won't last forever, but neither will we! They could be a legacy band! In 20 years time people could talk about them the same way they talk about Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones, etc. But the was things are going I seriously doubt it!

And for those of you who underestimate the power of MTV airplay...look at what they play and look at the charts - maybe, just maybe you'll see a resemblance!

And yes, Splinter promotion was even worse, but at least they made a 2nd video!
And the dude who mentioned they could change labels and go to Fat Wreckords...what the fuck are you on?? Seriously, tell me! I wanna smoke it too!

yeah just because offspring aren't well played at mtv that does not make me a less of a fan, of course not, but i also like, as a fan, to see that those in charge (mtv or whatever) giving them some deserved attention...

and that's the point here

and it pisses me even more knowing that some others band that do NOT have the same potencial as the offspring being recognized as if they had

The only thing I'm jealous is of those bands bank accounts (and the Offspring's for that matter)!

MTV doesn't necessarily suck. What sucks is the peoples taste in music. If Britney, Madonna, Jay z or whatever the fuck get airplay and they don't sell, they get removed, so there's the chance that the peoples good taste can oblige MTV to play good music! Perhaps you're too young to remember, but around 1992 they actually played mostly good (or at least decent) stuff (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, TOTD, Soundgarden, REM, Alice in Chains, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Sonic Youth, Joe Satriani, Metallica, Live, Megadeth, Public Enemy, RATM, Pantera, Smashing Pumpkins etc.) cos that music was selling great!

This discussion isn't about the Offspring being goog or bad. It's about not promoting the record in a way that it becomes successful and relevant to a new generation and that gives them credit like they deserve!

And I don't know why the fuck you judged me without knowing me and assumed I liked them due to some Americana trendiness! I was making a statement that probably the band, management and Sony NEED to read/hear/realize. Nothing agaist them or you. But you had to get anal! Deal with it!

Sure the discussion is not about TheOffspring being good or bad. I made up my mind about that a long time ago. The discussion is about you people liking an idea of a band that does not exist anymore. The problem is that you aim towards things that are not in the horizon anymore. You want the past back when all there is uncertain future.

Who the fuck died and crowned you king?? And I don't want the past back, and neither does anyone. It's just dumb to be on a major label and not to take advantage of its resources, that's all. I believe the Offspring should be on the same level as RHCP, Metallica, etc. because they have been - twice! Is it impossible to get there a third time? Sure, if they don't even try!
And don't give me shit with the "punker than you attitude", they want their music to reach as many people as possible. That's why the record gets done with a Bob Rock instead of some unknown producer, that's why they are on a major label, that's why they do interviews, make videos, that's why they play on the yahoo/myspace gigs! Cos they want their audience to be as broader and as big as possible!

And if you felt offended by the eat your own words remark, great. I also felt with the Americana comment, the deal with it comment, the denial comment, the true punk comment - but I just had to deal with it! So, here's my best advice: DEAL WITH IT! :)

Let me clarify some misunderstantings.

I say "you people" to make it clear I disagree with you people. If it sounded insulting I respectifully apologize.

Then you clearly contradict yourself. You say: "It's just dumb to be on a major label and not to take advantage of its resources". Then you mention all the publicity stunts TheOffspring has been involved recently.

I'm not giving you the "punker than though attitude". I'm just giving you my insight on the matter. It's just my opinion. Sure they want a broader audience, there's nothing wrong with it.

Your first post really make me think you wanted the era of the big MTV airplay back. The Americana era. As that it's not possible anymore i just said to you deal with it.

The denial comment really came from the fact that you kept insisting on your original idea which is fine, but it's denial in my opinion. The true punk comment is really meaningless and came from you wanting the band to go all popular again.

So there you have it.

Discussions on online foruns + different opinions = serious business.

If you look at the lists KROQ posts of the greatest altrock songs of all time/ the 90s, the band always has several songs listed.

Edit: after looking at the videos, there are no Nirvana videos listed either, does that mean that KROQ has forgotten about Nirvana? I don't think so. Plus they have a White Zombie and an N Sync video posted, i'd be embarrassed if the Offspring's video was even along side those...

I think the reason everyone wants them to be bigger is because they want bigger shows, more shows , more albums and more mentions of the offspring. well thats how i feel anyways. but i know it prolly wont happen, but i just hope they dont stop doing shows and stop making albums because they feel as if they arent any recognition as a band. Plus they can atleast try and promote themselves a bit.

They're one of the best and most well-known punk rock band in history. (Un)fortunately, their sucess have been sinking now the last years, and most people probably recognize The Offspring as "a band back in the 90s". But they're still here and kicks ass.

Hammerhead and YGGFK is doing great, though I don't know to much about sales. And yeah, of course I want them to be "more" populare again. I want them to play on the radio here in Norway again (hm, I really hope that will happend with YGGFK. I'm gonna send and email to every radiostations about this song and album ^^,), I want people to say "ah, listen, The Offspring is back!" and stuff...

But I'm absolutely ok with that if they don't do that well too. They still kick ass, and is making great music for us fans.

Yeah. So odd that we still didn't get any word from The Offspring themselves or their management on whether this will actually be the follow-up to "Hammerhead", despite the fact that it's been played on the radio a lot and is now at #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart.

Since KROQ's been playing it a lot (almost everyday), I'd say yes, "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" has gotten more popular.

Shank had wondered why Hammerhead dropped so much. I suggested YGGFK was the reason. I wasn't asking whether it got more popular.

Exactly! I've played it on my phone when I'm with friends, and one of the first time I played it a friend said to me "Hey, that one was actually cool! Send it to me". Then, two days ago, my class was driving bus to a mess (machines, technical). I played the song again (and again and again), and found out that more of my friends got the song on their phones. So we played the song many times on the trip, and at the end another friend of mine said that he also wanted the song. I sent it to him the next day, and everyone was like "Hell yeah that's a good song!".

It's really cool that EVERYONE likes it. Even my dad has it as ringtone on his phone now. ^^

I think it would be safe to call it that, when you mention the band to someone, they usually bring up Hammerehead or You're Gonna Go Far, Kid instead of "oh, yeah, i really liked Pretty Fly back in the day". It has certainly re-established the band in the public's consciousness.

A comeback album? Well…

For the first time in years they have two high-charting singles that weren't novelties. So in a way, yeah, I think they've re-established the sort of credit they had back in Ixnay and Smash. However, it's looking like this is going to be the first album since Ignition (that was what, '92?) that won't even go Gold. Album sales are just now at 160,000. I guess we just have to accept the fault is because albums just don't sell like they used to, being in the downloading age.

So, yeah. I'd say it's a pretty big success in it's own way. It's gotten, for the most part, positive critical reviews, the fanbase loves it, and it's put them back into public eye. If the next single is Nothingtown, or Kristy Are You Doing OK, I don't see why the third single wouldn't break the Top 5 also.

EDIT: Woah! I just saw on Wikipedia that Conspiracy of one is now 2x Platinum. Yet on the RIAA site, it still says only platinum. Regardless, that makes me kind of happy.

Ryder1234
10-16-2008, 10:24 PM

I was thinking even Half-Truism would probably chart moderately high. Stuff is Messed Up would be a chart-topper if the radio edit wouldn't destroy it. Takes Me Nowhere would do decently also, but I think Nothingtown and Kristy Are You Doing OK would be the best two.

They have no joke songs, but not every song would be radio friendly. I couldn't see A Lot Like Me doing so hot on the radio.

Neither do I. It's a great song, but i just don't see it getting airplay. I feel that Stuff Is Messed Up, Kristy, Nothingtown and Half-Truism would all be solid choices for a single. Although, if i were a betting man, i'd say the label choses Kristy.

I love stuff is messed up, but i think for other people that song could go either way. You either like it or hate it. A Lot Like Me would make a great single I think, because it's a little different. Kristy, imo, is the dullest most least exciting song on the album and i dont think it'll get anywhere, even if it is a little different. Nothingtown is a solid song, you can;t go wrong with nothingtown. Reminds me of I Choose a little.
