Burn After Reading - 8/10

So, the critical reviews of this haven't been exaclty been glowing; and although it's no "epic" like No Country for Old Men, it kept me more then entertained for a couple hours. I loved Pitt's character, and Malkovich was brilliant as always.

Airheads 10/10

I've seen this movie a lot, and it's really inspiring. All three characters (respectively played by Brendan Fraser, Adam Sandler and Steve Buscemi) stated a band and all they wanted to do was get their song played on the radio so they could be popular.

There's a funny thing about the movie: everytime I see the part when Chazz's girlfriend Kayla she comes home from work and takes off her skirt and runs around in that thong bodysuit and pantyhose, she makes me feel like I masturbate or have sex with a girl, who I think is pretty.

Also in the movie, I saw the poster similar to the album cover of The Offspring's Smash when Chazz drags one of the DJs (played by David Arquette) of KPPX out of his office.

"Pip, put the monster away!" (that's actually my favorite line)

Me and some friends saw 4 movies last night.

1. Kopps. A Swedish comedy which is kinda fun. 6/10.

2. House of Wax (2005 version). I thought it was pretty good the first time I saw it, now it was more like a joke. 4/10.

3. Requiem for a Dream. Definately in my top 5. It's such a great movie. 9/10.

4. Girl, Interrupted. Not really my genre but I still appreciated it. 7/10.

I don't normally like Brad Pitt, but I agree, he was one of the best things in that movie.

I saw W. the other night. My friend fell asleep for like 20 minutes during it. It was fairly interesting and funny at times but it's not really necessary since you already know pretty much everything. I forgot he owned a baseball team.

I just watched Religulous and it was pretty awesome, I would suggest it to anyone who isn't really big on God or anything. His point was anti-religion, including atheism, championing agnosticism as the only truly acceptable religion for its complete and utter doubt.

I dunno, it was really funny and really scary, but the ending was so much weaker than I thought it would be. He builds up all these points and just when he's about to knock them down, he just pushes them over instead of really hitting it home.

Oh well, it was still awesome.

I've always felt that there are a lot of movies out there that are kickass, but for some reason, they just aren't that great to watch when your chilling with some friends and drinking beer or whatever. Can anyone recommend movies that are great to watch when your kind of just trying to chill and be entertained/laugh, as opposed to seeing an intricate work of cinematic masterpiece?

Of course, I already know that comedy and action are a good place to start, but I'm looking to get specific titles.

Comedy:
Life of Brian
Borat
Death At A Funeral
Dumb & Dumber
Napoleon Dynamite
Superbad

Action:
Deathproof
Cloverfield
Wanted
Total Recall

Those are all good, entertaining movies which doesn't really demand an alert (sober) audience. I'd especially recommend Death At A Funeral and Deathproof.

I saw Quantum of Solace last week. I found it a little confusing. It struck me as the kind of film where they were so determined to put in so much action and excitement that they left out quite a lot of dialogue. So many times I was left thinking, "So, how does he know this?" "Where did they come from?" "What happened then to lead to this?". Decent Bond, but nowhere near as good as Casino Royale. Not at all. 6/10

I saw this a week ago (sat). I'll agree it's inferior to Casino Royale, and that it was quite confusing, however, I my quarrels with it are almost opposite to yours. The action seemed too varied and hurried, if anything I think they should have removed some of the more absurd art house techniques such as the dog/horses in order to make the action longer and some of the discussions more clear. I don't have much problem with the lack of dialogue, actions can speak louder than words, and Daniel Craig certainly fits into the strong-silent role better than any other Bond would have, although his character did seem a little overly-adapted from the man in Casino Royale. In spite of all my rants, I did very much enjoy it, there were plenty of improvement from the previous film that I will not go into, a recommendation for any casual Bond fan.

7/10
...or 8/10 with extra credit for being a James Bond film.

Ps. The opening is particularly disappointing, although the final scenes are brilliant.

These points I agree totally with. It's got some real ambitious bits in it which I felt didn't work. Fair play to the director for trying to add some arty bullshit to a traditionally no-nonsense series; but hopefully they've learnt their lesson now.

The opening scene is pretty rubbish, but I thought it was just me as I was sitting on the front row of the picturehouse.

Tropic Thunder

Certainly provided some laughs. I thought it'd be overhyped but it was definitely entertaining, just not in that "best movie ever" kind of way. Hollywood poking fun at itself is always funny.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

I turned it off after like an hour. I usually love Apatow films but this was just so like whatever.

I also think it's odd that one day I am might well look back on this film and think it was one of the best Bonds; it's certainly unique, it has wit, style and intrigue; maybe my expectations were all wrong.

It was actually worth the price of admission. I've always liked Paul Rudd, and having a soft, unexplainable soft spot for Seann william Scott didn't hurt either. It didn't feel too forced, although some of the jokes were a little unnecessary, but I still really enjoyed myself.

Quantum of Solace – 9/10

I really don’t really see what all the negative buzz was about (especially the "confusing" criticism), I thought it was great. The Art/Opera-House scene in particular was brilliant, definitely my favorite part of the movie. The only two slight complaints I would have would be, not quite as good as Casino Royal; and that the chase scenes, the first one in particular were too quickly edited, it would have been a lot better if they had slowed down the cuts by about a second. Other then that, this affirms previous statements of mine that Craig is the best bond, since, well, ever.

Casino Royale. I got bored several times, too many cliche's there, too boring romance part and I didn't quite like Craig as Bond. And I didn't like how glamorous the movie was from time to time. Maybe I just grew up from movies of such quality (I don't mean the budget or acting, but how predictable and silly at some places it was).

what's this? first off, the new Bond looks like he could be the bad guy in a Bond movie. blonde hair, pale blue eyes, clenched jaws, ridiculously pouty lip. honestly, in Bond-terms, the man looks like an agent for the KGB (nowadays FSB, but that's not very Bond-like).

secondly, everything Bond does, is done with the right timing. this movie had no timing at all; this was one fight-scene piled on top of another action-scene, & so forth. there was absolutely no time to sit back & enjoy the movie. those were probably the least relaxing minutes I've spent in my entire life. for god's sake, the tempo/pace of a Bond-film should be layed back & calm; secret agent-calm. everything at the right time, at the right moment.

in Casino Royale the whole 007-image is already ruined to the max. to the question "shaken or stirred", Bond answers "I don't care". I don't care?? what the hell? so I get it, they wanted to give our beloved James a bit of a make-over to make things interesting again, to shake things up a little (because in the case of Bond, you can't stir things up). he falls for a girl, as usual, but this time our new Bond gets all warm, fuzzy & weak over the new Bond-girl & he entirely forgets to be the professional cool smooth motherfucker he usually is. that he's supposed to be. he becomes an angry, frustrated, sad Bond with an explosive temper.

alright, raised eyebrow. whatever, man. ruin the ENTIRE image Sean Connery so impressively & artistically helped to create. (because honestly, he was the coolest smoothest motherfucker of them all)

in Quantum of Solace the fact that the creation of Ian Fleming is dead & burried is successfully underlined; they refer to the previous movie, like what the hell, am I watching a fucking soap opera?! fine, alright, I can get over that. 007 becomes even more angry, frustrated, sad, explosive, mentally instable, aggressive & revengeful. at this point, he's not so much "more human", as they tried to accomplish, so that the public could "relate to him more", at this point he's just blatantly insane. people people, he's a secret agent, not someone who escaped from the looney bin.

it might aswell not have been a Bond-movie. it was only associated with the old 007 to get more viewers, because everybody knows there's a Bond-fan in everyone & everybody knows Bond-fans will make sure they've seen every single Bond-film. had it not officially been a Bond-movie, NO ONE would've thought; "oh hey, it's like a Bond-movie." why? because it isn't.

GRRRR.

i gotta admit, i never liked bond films, i really don't know why but they never growed on me, untill i found this brilliant NEW bond! i really like him now, did i change or is he really good at what he does? maybe both!

holy shit. you have, like, the exact opposite opinion of mine. I understand that if the old Bonds weren't to your liking, this one is, because this guy is absolutely nothing like the old Bonds. I'm a sentimental chick. I thought even Pierce Brosnan was better, because he was at least remotely smooth, & I hated the guy with my entire being. go figure.

also, at the end of the movie, Bond is supposed to end up with the Bond-gal in his arms in the middle of a desert, or on a deserted island, while she says something like; "Bond? shouldn't you call in?" & he replies with something like; "no need for them to find us just yet". & then they kiss & make out. THAT is the end of a Bond movie. not murdering some dude out of revenge for the death his ex-girlfriend. when a Bond-girl dies, Bond moves on to the next. THAT is how he rolls.

hey this is interesting! we couldnt share the same opinion forever right? that would be boring.
hhum well, remember im not really into the other movies! so the "bond tradition" is not really what i am good at.
but i do get your point, and it makes sense. you miss the old movies type, and i guess i just like this actor...i really don't know why but i do. and so this makes me go and watch his movies ya know, just like that! but it's not my fav movie, DAMN actually its too far away from that.

wow by they way now i just recall that!! in the movie? that horse race? in italy?! do they (population) still spank the guy that finnishes in second place? i saw it at discovery LONG time ago, and i wonder if they keep doing it, maybe they do since its a tradition and stuff...

Quantum of Solace 7/10

Good Bond flick. Could have used more plot, although I like how they closed off the revenge angle and opened up a new one based on the huge-we-are-everywhere-and-we-are-meanies-group. Daniel Craig did well, he's my favorite Bond after Connery, as did the Bond chick. This movie illustrated to the world my personal fear of hydrogen cars as well.

Tropic Thunder 9/10
Saw it again. Have to give it a great score again. Stupid in parts, yet so funny. Cruise's character is phenomenal.

Ahh. I think I shouldn't watch Quantum of Solace after all. And yeah, Bond should be an elegant smooth mouthed lady-magnet that always has a plan we don't know about, not what the new Bond is. New 007 is just too modern, he should be more into retro (wtf with Bond's hair?), it's not Mission Impossible.

you know what the problem is with us Bond-lovers? we know we're going to watch it anyway. I said I didn't want to see it & certainly wasn't going to watch this disgrace for history & mankind. first day I'm at my parents' & my dad suggests to go see it (ENORMOUS Bond-fans, my mom & dad), I went straight to the cinema with them anyway.

I NEED to have seen every Bond-film. I NEED to be able to bitch, moan & rage about the damn thing.

...

do not, I repeat; DO NOT put Daniel Craig & Sean Connery in the same category.
(sorry Daniel Craig, I'm sure you're an okay guy)

how is it possible for you to like the fact James Bond has been turned into a soap opera? this is not the Matrix trilogy, an idea captured in three movies, this is James fucking Bond. thirty years from now, you still want the world to be as excited about this Bond-film, as we are about the old ones. so that thirty years from now, the world will still get excited over the newest Bond-film. because, after all, we wouldn't still be making Bond-films, if the old ones weren't so incredibly awesome. so if we fail to come up with a good Bond-film now, there won't be one in thirty years & I mean, hey..:(:(:(

sequels get boring as the story's stretched into too many episodes for the storyline. any James Bond-movie should be one hell of a movie, on its own, every single time, period. it doesn't matter it's an old concept, because it's sentiment, it's tradition, it's a phenomenon, it's BOND. if it's not according to the old concept, it's not Bond, duh. it doesn't need to be modern, it needs to be timeless, so in 30 years, people are still going to enjoy it.

Quantum of Solace.. is modern. congratulations James, on your update. not only do I hate the update even in these times (& I'm not the only one), I'm sure no one's going to remember this Bond-movie in ten years, let alone thirty.

thank god there are plenty of good Bond-movies, so that one day in the (hopefully near) future, someone might grasp the concept again & make one hell of a Bond-film.<3 *tear*

The Bond update was necessary to avoid irrelevancy. The Brosnan Bonds were great, and miles ahead of those awful Roger "i'm a dirty old man" Moore years. Goldeneye and even Tomorrow Never Dies are amongst my favorite in the series; however by the end it was getting a little too ridiculous, i mean a fucking invisible car? What the fuck?

Yes there are noticeable differences between the way Craig portrayed Bond and Connery, but there are differences between the way Moore and Brosnan did as well. The thing to remember is that Craig is playing a younger Bond then Connery/Brosnan, ect, so obviously he's not going to hold the same attitudes. I see this as forming the origins of Bond; as the Craig films advance i think we're going to see some significant character growth.

I also can't wait for the next film, apparently it's going to wrap up the story line created by Quantum and Royal.

MMM... Well... I like the Moore movies -except Moonraker- but seriously, the series was pushed too far with Die Another Day. I don't give a damn about the fucking invisible car, what make me say WTF was the polar surf shit... that was the low point.

Quantum is a great movie, yes, it could be longer, but it was great as a movie, and as a Bond movie was beyond expectations for me.

Sure, Connery was the best Bond yadiyadiyada... but Craig is James FUCKING Bond.

oh seriously, so they ARE going to pour it into a trilogy. *spontaniously dies*

listen, it's fine to like the movie, alright? it's even okay to love it. but it's not a Bond movie, period.

a Bond storyline has certain elements, always. like;
- the secret agent-element; professional, smooth, knows what he wants (he does care if it's shaken or stirred, k?), knows how to get things, knows what he's doing, acts at a calm pace.
- cool tricks from Q, or whoever he gets those from these days.
- Bond being captured by the enemy, most often because a girl distracted him for a second.
- the enemy has a sidekick with some kind of superhuman power. like the Chinese guy with the hat (& seemingly a chest of steel), or the guy with the iron teeth.
- a girl that Bond gets/wants & dies.
- the typical Bond-girl that Bond gets at the end of the movie.
- there's only the hint & suggestion of the two screwing together. it's not actually shown, because that's vulgar & Bond is never vulgar. he has style & class. get my point? you don't see Bond having sex. besides, sex is not cool; sex is intimate & makes you vulnerable. you only see the seduction, because seducing a hot woman is very cool.

I can deal with one or two of these elements being missing. to be honest, some are optional anyway. but not close to every. single. one of them. that's just tragic.

I'm going to. He has something about him that Brosnan did not. Braun.

That being said, I agree with jacknife that the invisible car was stupid as hell.

Like it or not, I like Daniel Craig as the new Bond and how the story line is going. I like that they are showing how a 'new' 007 is brought in and calmed to say a 'older', 'smarter', agent.

JoY

yes yes yes, the invisible car was absolutely ridiculous. all of Q's fancy tricks in the past even were remotely realistic.

just somebody PLEASE admit that close to all elements that make a Bond-film a Bond-film were completely missing & that it wouldn't have mattered one bit, if the movie hadn't been a Bond-film. you still would've liked it & maybe even I would've liked it, if it hadn't been tagged 007. it just deeply disappoints me that it doesn't live upto the expectation of being a Bond-film.

I will say this: I do wish that they would bring back Q (namely John Cleese) and have small gadgets. Not anything from the Brosnan atrocities.

And I'm just curious what would you think if this man were James Bond.

looks charming, not unrealistically handsome like he's some Brad Pitt, looks like he could pull off a good smirk... I'd have to see him & his ways, but I'd say from this first impression he'd make a pretty good Bond. if his accent's right, by the way.

That guy you posted IamSam imo has more Bond-ish face than Craig. Yeah, definitely.
Hey JoY, I admit that "close to all elements that make a Bond-film a Bond-film were completely missing" ;p. And agree with everything you said. And I'm not a 007 fan, never was.
Some things shouldn't be changed like making Bond version of 2000's. What will be next? James doing Matrix-scenes? Dodging bullets and taking some drug to make his heart beat faster to get some super strength and speed? We have enough of popular today modern movie tricks in other films. The fighting scenes were ways too realistic, not like in any previous 007 movie. Bond does have to be not realistic. Invisible cars? Back then it didn't look lame, rather exciting. That Le Chiffre (or whatever) guy was a good example of a villain from 007 movie, most of characters were appropriate, except the Bond himself.

I think Bond fans were expecting something far worse from new movies so they are glad to take them as they are.

Tropic Thunder and Burn After Reading (two very different films) both look very good and I plan on seeing them at some point.

W is supposed to be alright (doesn't premier in Europe yet.) Oliver Stone just acts like an asshole though. I don't know, there's something about his movies where you watch them and think "that was great!" and then later on "hmm what an ass, but still a good movie."

Mentioned above, Role Model looks really good. And I want to see the Curious Case of Benjamin Button as well.

A French musical. Weird to see a musical made in France, it might be coming into fashion nowadays, and it looks kinda silly. But anyway the movie was good and funny.
It's about a white racist french woman (played by Valérie Lemercier) who gets an illness that makes her skin black. And then she realises how bad people are treated when they are black, so she changes, becomes a better person, and has a black boyfriend, the gorgeous Anthony Kavannagh lol.
The funny thing is not only her skin is black, but she has the rythm in her skin, so becomes a great dancer.

I'd say all your french people out there should go and see it! its pretty good.

Well the whole thing about this movie, is to show how bad racism is, cause it shows a racist for discovers how stupid she was to be racist, and who changes. Guess I didn't explain it well.

Yeah, but a white actress in blackface makeup? The fuck..

The story is not racist, the woman is.

The woman is a VERY racist white woman who becomes black, she's got a rare skin disease (like the opposite of Michael Jackson's), and at first just being black for her is horrible, but gradually, she learns that the skin colour is not important, that all that counts is who the person is.
Of course it looks weird to see a white actress with black skin (all over), cause the black just doesn't go with her features. But that's the whole point of the story. She looks black and she tells everyone she's white! eventually she falls in love with a black man and doesn't want to become white again.
But the thing in the end is that the color isn't want counts.

Anyway, I'm really bad at explaining the story for a movie. But just know that it's not a racist movie.

Robert Downey Jr. was hilarious in blackface.

And to be honest, I see race-based jokes going over far better in France. It's just the way they think.

That was a horrible explanation that ultimately ends up sounding like "French people are soooo racistz" but that's not what I meant. Even though a lot of them are.

EDIT - I just looked up the trailer and a few excerpts and it actually does look awful, especially on her.

Yeah I agree with you about the black makeup looking awful on Valérie Lermercier. But the film itself isn't awful. My explanation wasn't good either. Anyway the movie was about a certain part of upper-class bourgeois people, who are racist, it doesn't mean they all are! One has to watch the movie (the whole movie) to have an opinion of course.

And yeah Maria, I studied a little about white ministrels who painted their skin black, that was definitely a racist thing, making fun of black people, very stereotyped, and it was in America (that was I was told in my blues class).

Is a good historical movie, of a moment in the World War I that was so weird... enemy soldiers celebrating Christmas eve and christmas in the front... but is pretty slow, and the acting is not that good -specially on the goddess Diane Kruger-

Oh my god... I almost feel embarassed for watching that piece of shit. There was no build-up, no suspense, no interesting characters. It was a lot of pointless violence, gore and generally disgusting stuff though which some people might enjoy. The ending was ofcourse really stupid but I didn't care anyway, I was just happy it was over.

Since the subject matter is historical, and we already knew how it would end; the film lost a bit of the impact that it had as a "thriller". Despite that, and the fact that i didn't really connect with Cruise's character, the support cast was superb.

I plan on checking out Benjamine Button, and maybe the Spirit (although i've heard terrible things) and Seven Pounds (i've heard mixed reviews) this week as well.

I'd really like to see either Slum Dog or Frost/Nixon, but none of them are playing near a theater where I live.

A lot better than expected, though of course still not good. I was surprised by the similarities to Cloverfield. Anyway.

Good acting in general. The little kid annoyed me though. The stupidy in the reaction of the Americans was unrealistic. The rest seemed not as unrealistic as expected, as far as one can call the matter realistic in the first place. Good ideas. The surreptitious advertising in the movie was too blunt.

Ocean's Eleven - 6-7/10. I'm starting to hate that Clooney's smile, quite often it makes me think that he's just an idiot who learned how to use his face in front of camera, just put that "wise" face expression on your face and smiiile. duh.

Ocean's Thirteen - 6-7/10. I skipped "Twelve" part because IMDB said that sucked badly. So "Thirteen" is about on the same level as "Eleven", there are some major flaws too, the smiling Clooney, but overall it's an entertaining movie for a single time.

Max Payne - 6/10. Even "Tom and Jerry" were less predictable, there were some major flaws as well (like neverending floating snow that changed into somewhat strong rain few times and the underwater scene where Max was remembering his family). The full movie was completely generic, every single scene was used in hundreds action movies before. Boring. I'm not a fan of the game, never played it. Did I give it 6? It's more like 5 atm.

I agree with all of this. Saw it last night and was enthralled. From the opening I thought it would just be an angry old man, but he evolves throughout the story. One of the more memorable parts is when he's in the kitchen surrounded by women filling his plate and he's happy. Good good movie. Didn't expect the ending either.
