I've seen some new stuff going up on their site, and I'm excited to see what they got coming...

Oh yeah, they are awesome! I heard on the news last week (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/dream_theater_enters_the_studio.html) that Dream Theater's coming back with a new album in 2009.

Awesome news! I love Dream theater.

Yeah, they got lots of great records, Awake, Images and Words, Train of Thought, Octivarium, and many others. Their last one, Systematic Chaos, was actually great too.

I like Dream Theatre, but the only album I ever really got into was Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I think I have most of their albums up until the last one that came out, but I've never given a close listen to them. I feel like I should, cause Six Degrees is an incredible album (though their lyrics SUCK).

Definatley check out Systematic Chaos. It's one of their best.

And you're right, the lyrics are generally terrible.

My friend just turned me on to these guys. He's about to blow his top with excitement over this new album. I really like their sound. They're pretty freaking awesome! I'm looking forward to new music.

I've always felt like Dream Theater was for pretentious people who didn't really like music.

it always makes me laugh when people say stuff like this, ya know?

I don't, as it turns out. There's never any need to play in 11/97.

Playing diminished arpeggios extremely fast while someone wails a minored add6 note impresses me even less.

I wouldn't say NEVER. I do enjoy some math-rock/metal on occasion. My biggest problem with them is how clean and sterile and robotic they sound.

Sounding like a robot is only fun when it sounds like you're shorting out (i.e. Buckethead).

It just honestly feels like there's no fun to their music. I watched a Youtube video of them and they looked so impassive.

I can't quantify my dislike of them - and I'm actually sorry that I came into this thread to mention it, since it should be for fans. I am sorry.

If Dream Theater didn't have such an outstanding reputation, I don't think their critics would be nearly as critical and/or negative. I'm not saying you're automatically full of shit if you criticize them, but I find it damn near impossible to have too many negative things to say about them. Personally, I'm not a huge fan because I don't think the singer's work is very heartfelt most of the time, but the instruments are downright amazing.

I'm kind of a fan, but I'm not crazy about them. Mostly because a lot of their songs are very long, and yes I know that makes me sound like a simpleton.

I still like them, but I can't remember the last time I put on one of their albums. I think I wore them out after listening to them so much. It doesn't help that their last 2 albums were mostly lame.

I've always felt like Dream Theater was for pretentious people who didn't really like music.
That's a pretty weird thing to say. I like dream theater. Do you think I don't really enjoy music and I'm just putting on act?

I know how that is. I was mostly joking when I said to the guy thats got me listening to them "yeah, I'm so used to short songs that about after 4 minutes my mind just loses its focus and i stop listening."

lol

With me, it's not so much losing focus, it's that I don't want to be stuck listening to the same song for 8+ minutes.

That makes it sound as though you're only listening to music to "up your playcount"

Which im pretty sure isn't true.

Yeah, then you could just listen to them halfway and then skip to the next song.
