Are they really going for artistic legitimacy or are they just clawing for attention?

The latter. It's always that way with celebrities.

most are just a desperate plea for attention. 30-odd foot of grunts is the exception.

Aren't most major label musicians celebrities as well?

Yeah, but I'm talking about crossovers not legit musicians who are celebrities solely as a result of their musical talent.

+1

And I personally add Juliette and the Licks.

it's hard to pick an actor who started an actual GOOD band…some were in good bands, others weren't! idk but other actors who’ve tried music: bruce willis, chris Jericho, and steven segal..not a fan of them! There’s a few other funny ones...

P, Johnny Depp's old band with the singer from the Butthole Surfers had some legitimately awesome/noisy stuff, but the one album they released was a little inconsistent. Check this out. (http://www.sendspace.com/file/h46jgn)

Zooey Deschanel's "She & Him" band are very good at what they do.

I remember not hating the handful of Dogstar songs I heard, although they weren't really worth listening to more than once. (edit: ok, just heard a couple of their songs on myspace and don't like it at all)

How's That Band from TV? They seem to get respect from what I've seen, but I've never actually heard any of their songs.

I liked Steven Seagal's latest album.

It might just be clamoring for attention, but it's probably also something they want to do. A free-time hobby with money-making possibility.

Band from TV is really good, IMO. They make money only for charitys so...i guess its just a free time activity or smth.
I just heard that new Paris Hilton song - Paris for president or what ever. Gosh, that bitch is annoying. I bet she cant even sing

The only one that came to my mind (except Steven Segal, never heard a single tone by him) is Jared Leto. I knew him as singer from 30 Seconds to Mars, before I found out he's an actor as well. His role in Lord of War was his best performance.

I think he's the other way around though, he was known for being in the band before he was known for acting.

I knew him as an actor before 30 Seconds. He was in "My So-Called Life" :P

I dunno if Jenny Lewis counts as she retired from acting to become a full time musician, but if she does, I think she's pretty damn good.
