View Full Version : Artist of the Month, March '09: Static Martyr

Vera

Intro
My real name is Timothy Sebastian, and I'm currently playing lead guitar in my band, The Great American Noise Machine. In studio, I also play all other instruments for the time being, with a few exceptions. We'll be putting out our first official (copyrighted and everything!) EP as Great American Noise Machine very soon, on our own original label (Dig It Records), so keep an eye out~

Musical style
I write about myself, and the different sides of myself. I'm fascinated by psychology and pseudo-psychology, stuff like Freud and Jung and various other weirdness. I also write about ontology and epistemology --- the "nature of reality" and "the nature of knowledge," respectively. The concept and exploration of real, final "truth" as an objective thing (and what it is, if it does exist) is a big source of fascination for me, something I am literally always thinking about to some degree.

Although, I must stress this, I am *not* necessarily a believer in these kinds of psychologies (although there are points I agree with). I think of them as less of a science and more of an art style, if that makes sense 0_0

Musical background, favourites etc
I first got into music through the Ramones, the NYC punk outfit. I got one of their greatest hits albums, and I got so into it that I wanted to learn how to play guitar. I got a guitar that Christmas, played in the school talent show three months later (my senior year, last chance, so I had to learn how to play "Blitzkrieg Bop" from scratch in three months, without fuckin' up). That's kind of a local legend around here --- not because it was good, but because it was hideous XD That's when I knew I wanted to be in a punk band, because punk bands are all about taking the fuck-ups and making them part of the show. So as long as everyone has a good time, there's no such thing as really "fucking up;" it's just for the sport of it all

Umm...what else? Not much, really. Favorite bands....don't really have any anymore (although you could include Offspring, Green Day, Ramones, and NOFX as basic requirements ); just as long as it's completely far out and weird....stuff like Rammstein, My Chemical Romance, various video game soundtracks (Persona 3 and Persona 4 being my personal favorites, what with the whole pseudo-80's-street-rap vibe, also Guardian Heroes for the Sega Saturn). Just anything that tests the limits of what's currently defined as "pop." The only stuff I really can't listen to is formulaic stuff; not just pop. That goes for punk bands who are too repetitive for too long, as well as alt bands that don't know how to change it up. I love bands that don't have steady roles lined up (i.e. the guitarist also plays keyboards, trumpets and household appliances, or the bass player operates the leafblower on one track, or something), and I love bands that have weird shit in their instrumentation that isn't normally associated with music, like Yello and Midnight Oil.

Ah, it's very nice to see that Vera maintains the artist of the month award:) First of all, thank you for that!
Second, I think that Static Martyr/The GANM really deserves this award because they have been producing so much good music in their thread.
In case anyone hasn't noticed it yet, here is the link to their thread where you can find most (if not all) of their music:
http://www.offspring.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33680

So, congratulations to Static Martyr. I hope you will release many more awesome songs:)

Ah, shucks, youse guys....:o

But really, thanks~ I'm an easy guy to motivate, I guess. Every now and then I'll wander in and come across a comment in our favor, and that's really all it takes to get me all psyched up to record :)

Translation: I'm all excited now that this topic came up, and so I'm working extra-hard on another song as I type this, currently untitled...it'll be the follow-up to "Merlin," which I posted here (http://www.offspring.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1272854&postcount=183):

P.S.

How do you guys do that spiffy thing, where you make the link appear by clicking on the word "Here?" Like, for example, I say, "I put it HERE," and you can click on the word "HERE" and it'll take you to the link?

randman21
03-09-2009, 01:27 PM
Haha, well first you type the word "here" and highlight it, then click the icon on the...thing...with the globe and chain link (the hyperlink icon), then put in the URL. Easy as pie.

And congrats!

Ah, kewl! Thanks Rand mah man :)

Edited previous post just for practice~

EDIT: Since I only have a month to work with this, I figure I should make the best of it....so for the interest of anyone who hasn't been following our band topic the last few months, I'm going to start uploading fresh links for all of the songs we've done since we started using the name GANM; I'd like to just upload a single zip or rar file with all the stuff in it, but as I've said before, I have a limited bandwidth/day connection (200MB/day, to be exact), and not all of that is reserved for my private use....so alas, I have to settle for uploading the individual files. I'll be updating this post as I upload them; I plan on doing a few tonight, as many as I can before I have to hit the hay (work early tomorrow :(). Enjoy~

I'll post the lyrics later in a single notepad file, once I've finished compiling them all.

My wish to you is to find a proper drummer with a proper instrument.

It's cool to see that someone likes all different kinds of stuff we've done :) I look back on those 5 song titles and they were written so far apart that it gives me deja-vu....

Tim and the Team got their deserved place in the sun. Congrats to the by far most productive artist '08.

First off, many, many, MANY thanks~ No matter where this band ends up, youse guys will always be The Guys That Were There To Give Us Support From The Beginning. Hell, half of these songs probably would have taken twice as long for us to get around to if we didn't know there were people out there who actually wanted to listen to 'em!

Second: you might be all skippy to know that we actually seem to have found both a bassist and a drummer; and given that I play guitar and Steven and Allen sing, it appears that we're rounding out the lineup. Allen and Steve have been talking about getting us all together for a meet-and-greet and maybe record some songs, and then we'll start practice, and then after we're confident enough together, we'll probably start playing shows~

Which will, of course, be videotaped and posted here and on the Myspace for all to see :D

So again, thanks a million to everyone who's ever posted in this or the band's topic. We really do appreciate every little bit of encouragement/criticism/etc. that you guys have to offer, and we always will!

Alright, I found some more stuff :) I might be overdoing a little with all the uploads, but like I said, I only have one month to make an impression for mah band, and I plan on making every day count~ We'll be recording tomorrow if I can get ahold of Steve and Allen, so in the meantime, I found some more holdovers from the Static Martyr era (i.e. early-mid-2008, just Steve, myself, and a drum kit); we'll be re-recording a few of these songs for future use:

An Apology (To the World) {3:32} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/foxp5x
D.R.P. {2:05} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/61sycm
Ever's Gate {1:35} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/u861sv
Life With You {0:42} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/vmzq8i
Military Mind {1:32} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/dgbunn
Pop Song {1:33} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/o6b7sd
Sin Like It's 2009 (And Obama Is President) {1:15} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/109ep2
State of the World (Acoustic Version) {1:13} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/sp8x41
Static Martyr {1:26} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/am2xt1
The Fool {0:15} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/pkl6d1
The Ground {0:24} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/qvhp1o
The Kid {0:50} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/ofhpjx
The Path {0:28} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/0z7y14
The Room {0:38} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/3zw9q6
The Unpocalypse* {2:14} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/mnsxux
Us {2:59} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/w0qucn

*=I totally plagiarized the main melody from Star Ocean 2 for the PSX....that's why we never used this one :( I wanted to do a cover, but I got carried away and it turned into this instead....too different to be a cover, not original enough to be its own song.

My favorites from this batch are Us, Ever's Gate, Static Martyr, The Ground, The Path, Military Mind, and The Unpocalypse. But please keep in mind, Steve and I were still, er, refining the art of songwriting when these were recorded, so a lot of them aren't the finest quality (in either sense)....

Sometime between now and this weekend, I'll go ahead and upload our covers (one or two each from Bad Religion, NOFX, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, a good 5 or 6 Offsprings :) and some other junk). Plus anything we might record tomorrow, that I have time to work on between now and then.

Laters :D

P.S. I couldn't resist just tossing these up before I go to bed:

Insight (Dead Kennedys cover) {1:39} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/3brkz7
Part III (Bad Religion cover) {1:48} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/3l6ngz
Whoops, I OD'd (NOFX cover) {2:35} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/16wjjo
The Kids Aren't Alright (Offspring cover) {2:55} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/bchn76

Alright....that really is all for tonight. Goodnights; gotta get up early tomorrow!

Attack Ships On Fire Off The Shoulder Of Orion {2:12} = http://www.sendspace.com/file/cfhqrf

Wanted to mention that I was just hanging around your Myspace, and that Campus Crusaders for Crust reminds me of early Offspring - in a good way.

I tend not to enjoy most of the early songs anymore, but there are some that still pull that classic vibe with me and that I can't help enjoying.

This is that kind of song.

Alright, another new song. It's called Mother and Father, Ordained {1:33}, and if you're familiar with our early work as Static Martyr, then this may seem familiar --- it's quick, messy and political, and more paranoid than a Dead Kennedys single :) Enjoy~

Just a reminder; I copied all of the links to our songs into the band topic, so even after this topic purges, you can still find downloads of all of our currently-released material there. I'm working on a lyrics comp as well, but it's slow going (something like 50-60 songs to sort through and try to remember the lyrics to 0_0). Not all the lyrics are mine, either, so it's kinda rough trying to piece 'em all together. But it's going~

And to extend the thanks to the BBS once again....I forgot to mention, this colossal project I'm working on (somewhere around 16-20 songs, all built around a unified concept) actually made the leap from idea to actual literal thing as a result of this topic. I got the hankerin' to do something HUGE to compliment being nominated, and so I put together this concept I'd been turning around in my mind for some time, and it turned into something way bigger than I'd expected. Knowing that people actually look forward to hearing what we're doing definitely takes some of the stress out of recording new stuff :)

Been a kickass month,
--Tim

Yeah, I'm sorry that I didn't manage to do the AotM for April. The Fisticuffs were voted AotM April, but Randy was away for two weeks and therefor couldn't send me the information I needed for the thread. And I thought that Randy deserved a whole month as AotM, so we decided to skip April. Sorry again.
