View Full Version : Artist of the month, May '09: The Fisticuffs

Intro
I am the Fisticuffs. I hail from Fayetteville, NC, a military town completely infested with southern rock and screamo. I despise both of these, so I have largely had to rely on myself for musical motivation, and this is the product.

Musical Style
I, for one, am not against the use of genres to describe my music, because I believe it speaks enough for itself that I can say "hey, it's heavily punk-influenced alternative/rock" and the listener will still come away with his own idea of what it is. But now I'm talking out of my ass. My main goal is to write songs so catchy that they make you want to go out and strangle because you can't get 'em out of your head. I want to be an accessory to murder.

Musical Background/influences/etc
Every major thing that has ever happened to me musically has been a fluky mistake: becoming interested in rock music, picking up guitar for the first time, starting to write songs, getting into the Offspring. It's all stuff that was "right place, right time" moments and, in an episode of "Sliders", would not have happened on any other parallel dimension out there. Each is a cool story. I should tell you some time.

I find myself being a bit backwards as far as influences go. Except for an obvious few, I don't typically write the kind of music I listen to, and don't listen to what I write. As far as punk goes, I like Offspring, Blink 182, a li'l Green Day, and recently, Lagwagon. That's it. I'm not a huge fan of the genre at all, especially pop punk (which I realize all these bands are), and I actively attempt to avoid a lot of it, in order to not get too comfortable with that style. And regarding that side project, I don't listen to country, blues, folk, or "indie" at all, which leaves me to what I actually do listen to. Pop. And hell lots of it. It's where I get my catchiness from. :)

Concerning "Artist of the month, June '09":
I think I will do the Aom for June, so please PM me your votes for the June '09 award! Thanks:)
[/official part]

Randy, you deserved this:) Your music is great and you didn't fail with the catchiness, for sure! The energy of your songs is great and the sound quality has become very professional. You could easily release your newer songs on a cd and no one would notice that they were recorded at home;)
Once again, well deserved!

I agree with Ad8. I even think that you don't need a whole band to record your first album. Can always get Becca to do the real drums part from england, and get a real bassist to do the bass... and then record the rest yourself.

Would just need a band for concerts and stuff.:p

Seriously Randy ... all my winking and nudging doesn't seem to have helped at all ... you are AoM and no new releases in the month of May, so 10 days to go and counting *considering you have forgotten that I hinted at a week, a week ago* :)

*I am waiting with great aniticpation for those two new songs you were working on. I don't know whether you will read this or even what a person is suppose say in public or not

Hehe, thanks Free?. More accurately, it's less "laurels", more "resting" these days. I've been lazy this month, guys (come to think of it, wasn't O.L.E. the last proper song I posted? That was in March), and generally not feeling up to it. You will get something before this month is over, though. More than one something, in fact.

The entire point of AotM is that it's a representation of the Your Band forum, as picked by us. Everyone who participates will get a turn, but months are picked by everyone.

I think we need a definitive list of Your Band artists, honestly, so I can know which are available to vote for, and so we can keep track of which have been Artists of the Month.

Yeah, I thought about that, too. Maybe I'll include a poll in the AotM: June thread where all the bands are listed and everyone can vote for July, would that be ok?

Create the thread. I was thinking that we could trade off every month. I do june, you do july, so on and so forth. I like doing this. it's fun.

As for T-6005 idea, it makes sense. Maybe a thread listing the bands availible for next month and people can vote.

I agree, would be good to have a poll/thread listing all the bands (maybe including a direct link to listen to the songs (if that's possible) it would make things easier, I guess.

I think this is great for a completely different reason ... I am only aware of five bands in this section. If you list all the bands in one place *like the poll* I can check out the bands I haven't heard yet. Plus, I believe this would make a more level playing field for AoM :)

Now that I listened to it a few more times, I can still say that I love the song (especially the vocals:)) About the mixing: I think there is a little less treble on the vocals than in Jane rhymes with pain or Covenant for example. It didn't particularly annoy me but I noticed it. That gave the song kind of an "old Fisticuffs" feel :D(more similar to Let This Ride or Big As Life)

Hey thanks! As I was telling someone before (even though I messed the story up), I was inspired by the Offspring song "Cogs," which of course, I've never heard. And when I was done writing it, I thought "wow this sounds like a bad religion song". At that point, I'd never heard BR, haha. But it just seemed like something they would play, based on what I'd heard about their music. :P

Hehe, now you can stop wracking your brain. And great! I wasn't sure anything could top "Over There". Perhaps you like my "O" songs, or maybe just the older ones. Remember when I said Over There was from 2005. Well, Out of Sight was written in 2004.
