View Full Version : New Offspring album in 2010? Really?

Even though Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace has been almost a year old now, it sorta does appear that we don't have to wait another few/couple years for another Offspring album. The 2010 in music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_in_music#Unspecified_Date) article on Wikipedia says they're planning a new album next year; however, I think this is actually a rumor, none of the band members revealed to us that they're already writing another album or planning to go back to the studio this year or next year. Dexter said months ago in this interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU0KM4oDoZw&NR=1) that the next Offspring album might be made faster, but he didn't say they were going to release one next year.

it's most likely just an estimation. I remember either Dexter or Noodles saying in an interview that they were gonna tour for a year or so, and then head back to the studio.

That would be cool. I think Offspring just took to long time because they had to find a new drummer, went through shit with Geffen Records over their old drummer (Atom's contract with Geffen prevented him fron recording with the Offspring) and the fact that they wanted to make a really good record, which they succeeded.

There is a reasonable chance that there may indeed by a new album in 2010. The band will most likely finish touring for RAFRAG by early next year. Then after a break, they could be in the studio by the summer, and a record out by the end of the year. It will all depend on how quickly the writing for the album goes. It seems like they already have an initial idea of what the next album is going to be like, Noodles even mentions that Dexter has met with Bob Rock to discuss the new album, during this interview,

Newbie has a point. Splinter was supposed to be fast, but instead, it got delayed beyond belief. All I can hope for is that they don't make any stupid announcements like naming the album "Yellow Submarine: Paul Is Dead" or something, because then Ringo Starr and Michael Jackson would be filing lawsuits to make a quick buck, thus delaying the release with like six months. Just go into the studio, write the songs, do all the mixing and editing and shit, give the CD a name and release it as soon as it's finished. If everything goes smoothly, I think there is a very realistic chance that the album will be finished by November 2010.

Why wait until 2011, just do it now.
On a lighter note, I believe we won't see a new Offspring until 2011. I really hope I'm wrong.

Personally, I don't believe that the new cd could be released next year. There is quite a long way from announcing that to putting into practice. Not to mention that apart from some rumours we don't have any confirmed information. However, I think that the positive thing about the general interest in the new album is that some more facts may get uncovered in the nearest future. If people are spreading rumours, Offspring itself mentions about it in interviews...But I don't expect too many facts at this stage. We'll see ;)

Come on, don't you remember when bands just jammed in the studio for two weeks after touring and produced an amazing album?

There are some bands who've released multiple original albums within a year. Anything is possible, even without any announcements yet, so don't dismiss it entirely yet.

Quagmire
05-26-2009, 08:26 AM
I'd say the first half of 2011 is the earliest you will see a new album. They will most likely tour for the rest of this year and then most likely take some time off. So by the time they get around working on a new album it will be well into 2010 already.

hshduppsnt
05-26-2009, 09:00 AM
It's a possibility. Didn't they say they were hoping to go back in the studio shortly after the tour? I suppose things always change planning wise based on how tired they feel when they get back.

Probably depends on how much usable material they think they have that didn't end up on RAFRAG too.

Either way I wouldn't hold your breath but even an attempt to get one out then would be awesome because it would surely mean a follow up much sooner than we got rafrag.

All in all I'm just happy they're still planning on recording :)

You never know about The Offspring and their albums. They sometimes get scrapped and delayed, examples: Ixnay on the Hombre was supposed to be released in 1996 but didn't come out until 1997, Splinter was supposed to be released in the middle of 2003 but didn't come out until December of that year and Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace was supposed to be released in either 2006 or 2007, but didn't come out until last year.

Summer of 2010 would be perfect, and pretty reasonable if you ask me. It's amazing how RAFRAG still has momentum, and given the new single (Half-Truism) and the upcoming video (Stuff Is Messed Up), it will have momentum for a while longer. When they release this new album, some of the momentum will carry over from RAFRAG. That was not the case with Splinter and RAFRAG.

Blitzkrieg Bop
05-26-2009, 12:09 PM
I believe that 2010 is too soon unless they use the material they didn't utilize for RAFRAG, which I seriously doubt ... so my prediction would be mid to late 2011. They will probably finish touring by the end of this year, take a long break, do some other shows in between and then hit the studio.

That's right. Actually, many bands don't wait too long to release a follow-up and the Offspring is a great example. In this case, I think it depends mainly on whether they have a concept for the new album or not. If they had some potential killers for this new stuff now, most of work would have to be done in the studio. But generally I agree that the Offspring can be quite unpredictable in this matter. Whatever they plan, I feel quite certain that the next year ( or even months) will be full of predictions and talks about upcoming album ;)

I think Jojan meant that Dexter didn't say a single word about 2010. He just said they will try to make next one faster.

I don't think it will take so long, actually I do think it could come out 2010, because of the many songs they've written during the RAFRAG's recording.

Yea, but also depends on if they're going to use their left-over material at all. You know how picky they were with RAFRAG, right? Dexter wrote in his journal that all songs were going to be original because using left-over songs "would be cheating". lol.

Or maybe it was just some speculation. I thought Dexter or one of the other band members mentioned a few years ago that "Pass Me By" was going to be on RAFRAG. It was a possibility until back in 2007, when Dexter posted on his journal saying that adding old stuff would be cheating, so "Pass Me By" never got on that record. Hopefully it'll be on the next record, but I assume Dexter might say the same thing again about adding old stuff to a record.

I don't think they will put leftover material on the new record, but instead i suppose they'll release a b-sides Album.
But nevertheless i think that a new record in 2010 is possible, if the brake between Splinter and RAFRAG gave them a new "boost" of ideas, or stuff.
Glad that they keep on recording new stuff and make new album(s):)

Here's my input. Remember when we all thought RAFRAG was coming out in Spring/Summer of 2006? Then we were like, "OK, early 2007." Then late 2007, then we just got more and more rabid as the wait dragged on.

All I'm saying is, nobody get your hopes up for this album being released at the given time, because you could just wind up being disappointed.

The new album may happen, but doubt it's coming soon. In Noodles' conversation with Canada's X92.9 (the same conversation mentioned in the UG article and my Punknews.org (http://www.punknews.org/article/33756) article), he said Dexter was working with Bob Rock again, so the recording process may be slower.

Awesome! All three songs have grown on me tremendously. Since singing HT on the Covered by Us, I've been listening to it more than Trust in You. Rock Bottom is probably my fourth fave. And when I only have time to listen to three songs from RAFRAG, that one-two-three punch of YGGFK, Hammerhead and A Lot Like Me is hard to beat.

Definately. Rock Bottom is a close fave because it makes failure sound fun.

If it's out in 2010, that'd be unreal! It seems sooo soon after waiting for RAFRAG.
And that's good. I don't see a reason why we should wait another 5 years for this.

How could they be working on new material while they're on tour right now? They're not in the studio.

Because the thread keeps getting bumped and the only post is yours that has been the same, just the date changed of when it was posted.

Honestly I dont care whether or not it is a rumor the fact that they are coming out with an album in the near future is awesome.

I agree that Pete is good and so is Atom.

I want Ron Welty back too, but you never know, some bands go on with or without the same or a different drummer, same as Iron Maiden, AC/DC and Bad Religion.

I'm having trouble understanding the fixation on Ron as the Offspring's drummer is. I mean, it's been years since he left, right? And Pete just kicked ass on this tour.

mrconeman

Because he's been the only "Offspring member" to actually record anything with the band. Atom can be looked at as nothing more than a hired hand because he only toured, and at the minute Pete is in the exact same boat.

If/when anyone other than Josh Freese actually records the drums on an album, I think they'll stop caring so much for Ron.

It's true.
But I'm also having problem understanding what do you have against people that wants Ron Welty back (me not included). I mean, everyone can have their opinion. Just my honest opinion.

Pete may not be as good as Ron, but I got to see The Offspring last summer and Pete was great at that show.

I'd say Pete is much better than Ron. Ron had absolutely no energy live. Really boring watching him play.

Ron was not boring,he was badass, thatīs why he always played that way, same as with Greg K,he doesnīt uses a lot of energy on stage, but thatīs his playing style,Pete has no style at all,he is a great drummer, probably he is more talented than Ron,but Ron had more style.

I think it's all about energy. Atom was a really badass drummer, and just watching him go crazy on the drums was entertaining. Pete to me is a mix between Ron and Atom. But I like Pete's style over Rons, simply because in my opinion a drummer needs to be energetic and 'fun' on the drums. I'm not bashing Ron, he was a great drummer. But it always seemed like he wasn't having a good time playing. Greg K is different, he has his little dance and he's a legend.

I agree,IMO,I donīt mind wich drummer is playing, the 3 of them are great, now,if I could choose,Iīd pick Josh Freese.

Hell yes, now we're talking. It's a shame he didn't join the band. But I'm glad now we seem to have a steady drummer.

Dexter said months ago in this interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yU0KM4oDoZw&NR=1) that the next Offspring album might be made faster, but he didn't say they were going to release one next year.Well Wikipedia never really has the right facts.

But they mentioned it in some interviews for example when they were in Slovakia Dexter told we could expect a nex CD in 2010 .
