A new robotic technology undergoing research by DARPA could produce a series of robots which can power themselves on organic matter. These robots, which could be operational by 2012-2013 are aptly named "Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robots" (EATR *chomp chomp*). The robots will be programmed to identify suitable matter for "digestion" and utilize it to roam with almost unlimited fuel capacities. DARPA thus far claims the robot will be programmed to identify such masses as wood and plants, despite the obvious logical organic matter that one imagines would be encountered by a robotic military unit.

Matrix, anyone?

Great, one thing we need more is robots that harvest every possible resource! I wish they developed this kind of techniques to be used in normal cars, instead.

oh, for moments i thought u were going to say that they had created robots that could replace men....(in every sense of it of course)

They already have battery-powered robots that do in that sense.

Not yet.

And they already had robots that were powered by digesting things like flies a few years back, so this doesn't surprise me that they're upping the scale.

Also, for the record, computers think people taste like pork.

I watched a thing on TV last night about how advances in robots are going. Some of the things they showed were amazing.
There was a robot that could identify people it "knew" and could tell what someone was feeling, such as anger, sadness, etc.
There was another robot that actually learned movements by watching humans, and was able to do things like cook a dinner after watching it.
They even discussed things like "brains" that some computers have that imitate a human brain, which, when it becomes advanced enough, could give the robots the ability to reason and make decisions.

Now all of this is neat and stuff, until the TV show put it all into "military terms." Its very scary to think that a machine could easily learn how to kill me, and be given the ability to decide if I should live or die...

I have given up hope on mankind. Just because we can do it doesn't mean we should do it.

I take solace in the fact that they are trying to make them vegetarian.
