View Full Version : What to do?

I have a summer job. I cut grass around student housings. It's a lot of grass, and all I do from 8AM to 3:30PM is waving that cutter sidewise.
I have done a lot of stuff to let the time go by: singing, talking to myself, counting in several lanugages, make up words, but mostly just thinking. I wear big earclocks because my trimmer(the thing we cut grass with) is making a lot of noise, so I can't listen to my MP3 player.

Somebody, please give me ideas to what to do!

Write things in the grass and after you've done that cut the grass around.
Make patterns, by mowing in certain directions. Like on football fields except more complex.
Start in different ways, left-to-right, spiralling inwards/outwards.

I'd be doing things like that I guess.

You just mentioned everything I'd do if I had a job like that so I can't give you any advice. There's just not much else to do. Well, you could get earclocks with a built-in radio receiver but those are probably quite expensive.

Wow, that was not a bad idea at all! Thanks. I will try to write something tomorrow :)

there must be a law against doing that kind of work for those hours, or do you get to switch tasks and do other things?!

No, seriously. I cut grass from the day starts till it end, only to be paused with a 20 min long lunch brake.
Now I seriously hate grass.

Heh, I was going to suggest something similar to what nightvision did. I'd probably wear those "earlocks" (if they are what I think they are), with some earphones for the mp3 player in it. That is, if there are no good radio stations there, as there aren't here.

I hardly find 8.30 AM to 15.00 to be from the beginning to the end of the day.

I'd take more breaks.

The earclocks are attached to a helmet and safety net to protect our eyes. We are required to use them when cutting grass. I had to sign papers where I agreed to always use the safety equipment when cutting.
The earclocks are unattachable, they sit firmly to the rest of the helmet, so there isn't possible to use radio earclocks.

- reminisce over your life, mostly consisting of mowing the grass during midday, as I understand :p

I've done A LOT of this. I keep telling me "remember all the money you'll get, remember all the money you'll get" all the time.

I don't think sleeping at work will help me holding on to my job very long.

I know how you feel. I'm wondering how long I can get away with this much internet use at work. Before long I'll probably be told to stop. Then I will have NOTHING to do except listen to music.

I assume these 'earlocks' are big ear covers that block out sound right? Can you not fit ear bud headphones underneath them?

Plan the murder of the inhabitants of each house.
Draw strange shapes in the grass and chant spells.
Work naked wearing nothing but the safety gear.
Claim you are not breaking the rues since you are wearing the safety gear.
Chew gum.
Wear an s&m slave suit and act like nothing's happening.
Alternatively, dress as Jason Vorhees and act normal.
Install a small screen on your work equipment and watch porn.
Fight an invisible enemy.
Apologize wholeheartedly every time you cut something.

He didn't say he hates his job... just that he gets bored.

You could always plan what your going to spend your money on.

That might not take long though, anyone who makes you work half 8 till 3 with a 20 minute break probaly isnt paying you enough either.

For me, it depends on the temperature, when itīs really hot, this job can be deadly. Hey try to get some goat, cow or sheep, some grass-eater, they like grass :)

I can honestly say I've never heard of that - wow. You'd think they'd run away or something.

Maybe there are no grass-eaters in his region, so he has to do it himself

In a field with a fence yeah - but not in the open for them to run around the streets no.

Tijs

Ah, well it works here and it looks awesome :p Often they walk around in the forest too. A week or three ago I talked to the shepherd and he said that there are 300 sheeps (after he made me guess first - 250!) but sometimes one gets away :p But of course it's a lot easier for a sheep to get out of sight in the forest than on the streets.

Wow, I still can't believe how different it is there than it is here. I'd love to see that - sheep just walking around... lol.

It is fucking warm this week here. Always over 20 celcius every day. I drink litres and litres of water. And having to use a helmet and a working suit is not helping to keep me cool!

That's exactly what earclocks are. I've tried to put earbuds underneath, but it didn't work.

I did! Today I wrote my whole name in the grass. I have four names, so that's quite a lot :p

I got a bill three days before I started working, and absolutely everything I will earn is going to pay that bill. So I won't be able to even look at the money before it's gone.
