Archives are stripped-down read-only versions of threads for SEO purposes (I believe?). There are links to the original thread at the top. However, it's bad etiquette to bump an old thread unless you have something very profound to add to it.

Search Engine Optimisation. I figure that the format they're laid out in is ideal for search engines to cache (simple format, no bloat to work around, low file-size, etc.)

Do NOT post in threads that are more than a couple months old.

Anything that is in an archive should never be posted in.

This is going to sound really stupid, but that is the first time in my life I have heard the word, "archives". I do not know the definition of the word. I will look that up right now.

It's basically old stuff that you don't use everyday but that you want to keep because one day, you might need them. :)

For the record, www.dictionary.com is your friend.

And also, the word is pronounced "AR kives" in case you were wondering.

It turns out my old threads with little responses were taken off the boards and are now archives. If you can access old threads, what do you need the archives for? They are all the older threads and why is it a different color than the threads. Why can't I post in them?

So I canpost in archives. I don't want to post in them I just want to know what the point of them is if you can just look at the original thread. What is up with the printable version.

The point of archives is that most of the irrelevant code (from a search engines point of view) has been removed which makes it easier for search engines to crawl through the site. The disadvantage is that typically older threads will rank higher compared to new ones. Another positive side effect is that it's less demanding for the server. These were the pros and cons a couple years ago when I was still interested in this stuff and I assume they still are the same.
