'Astronomy is such a precise science, we can plot exactly where the planets were, and it certainly seems this is the fabled Christmas star. There's no other explanation that so closely matches the facts we have from the time.


And from my own ramblings (shameless advertising here: birchdrew.com):


In Persia and Rome a god named Mithras was worshiped on this day and as more and more pagans converted to Christianity, the more and more converts who continued to practice a mid-December celebration increased. Constantine (not the Keanu Reeves characterization) had to do something about it, so he combined the Mithraic celebration (and other sun worshiping celebrations) with Christian thought. So Jesus Christ, being born of the virgin Mary, had his day to venerate his birth placed on a pagan holiday. The likely hood that he was actually born on December 25th is not very high.

So does anybody wish to join me in chanting, “Keep Mithras in… solstice”?
