Gimme a break! Sounds EXACTLY like Times Like These!

As far as Hey God / Bon Jovi, I'm not familiar with their songs for a good reason (the ones played in the radio as I was an adolescent makes me hate them). Also, I will not type Bon Jovi on youtube...imagine if the cops come to my house and see I've looked up bon jovi...

You just wait for Dexter's magic to kick in, Offspring always had resemblances to other bands' music here and there, it didn't prevent those songs from being awesome. It's a part of Dexter's musicianship.
It's funny how people still can't get used to that.

I mean... since when are people comparing the new song to others when they heard freaking 15 seconds of it?

Thats what I'm saying....I can see how the riff sounds similar but if you listen closely it is quite different. I mean we all know that some offspring songs have sounded similar to other songs in the past...just like almost every band in the world has made songs that sounds like other band's songs. Do you know how many songs there are out there? It's hard to stay completely original unless you've listened to everything ever made. It's going to be a new Offspring album! Who gives a shit?! :D Just enjoy it for what it is!

(Can't wait to see The Offspring in Reno on the 19th of this month.) :D :D :D

Reading what everyone was saying I was expecting something a lot like RAFRAG, but I was impressed. I liked the Offspring feel of the song, and the two powerful beats right before Dexter's about to sing is so sick.

I really liked how drums sounded in this clip, too. I remember when i saw clips from recording sessions for Trust In You, drums sounded so awesome, powerfull, and i was disappointed when i heard the official album version of the song, they were completely burried in the mix, probably also due to extensive use of dynamic range compression. The album sounded a bit muddy due to it. I hope this time it'll be different though.

because in the album songs were mastered (that was badly done in my opinion) - P.S. like you said. I believe what we had listen is some raw recording. I don't even know if it's actually Pete's work or drum machine sound. I just hope they do not go through Sterling Sound again, or at least Marino. He's not very good, if you check his other works, the final product isn't excelent.

It's hard to find a record with mastering done properly these days. One of those rare records is Nirvana: Live At Reading, it has good dynamic range, about 10 db, give or take one. But sadly there are albums not much better than Death Magnetic (mastering wise). Alice In Chains' new record was amazing for example, but overcompressed (it was mastered by the exact same guy that mastered Death Magnetic, so i'm not really surprised). And RAFRAG was deffinitely a victim too, maybe even worse than Black Gives Way to Blue.

I pray to God, whichever of all the countless gods exist (if any), that this brickwalling trend would change. I'm not an audiophile, but i do like good sounding records.

Even if I am hurting myself saying this, green day latest albums have great masterization.

The guy that did AIC's mastering also works at Sterling Sound.

You never know, when my band recorded in a studio, the drums sounded very powerfull and full, pretty much exaclty as in this video, through a mixer and those expensive speakers it sounds amazing, i then took the rough master (which had said powerful drums) and on an average sterio it sounded very flat and had bad overtones on the snare and the cymbols bled, but after mixing and whatnot the drums sounded great!

I'm not saying RAFRAG had great mixing though, they could of done so much better with it, i mean Bob r\Rock mixed Metallica's black album for fuck sake, which mixing wise sounds amazing, that big stadium probally wouldn't suite Offspring's sound, but he could of done alot better with RAFRAG.

Ixnay on the Hombre had the best drum sound IMO.

I can't speak for the work of this particular mastering engineer, but Sterling Sound is a world-class facility. Seriously one of the best in the world. I didn't think the mastering on RAFRAG was that bad...maybe it just wasn't as bad as some other records I've heard since, but it doesn't piss me off.

I didn't think the mastering on RAFRAG was that bad...maybe it just wasn't as bad as some other records I've heard since, but it doesn't piss me off.Yes, they're maybe the best in the world, but one thing is Ted jensen, another is this Marino.

RFRG was the poorest producing and mixing of The Offspring records, let's hope Bob and others don't use the same settings. The songs themselves are great, but the overall sound world was pretty blurry. With drum sounds like, let's say Dookie from 1994, the listening experience could've been quite some different.

It does sound similar to "Times like these", but you cannot say anything till you heard the whole song. And those who said "Helena" = "Half-Truism" will say the same about this song and the Foo Fighter's song. You can't help those "IT'S A RIP-OFF!" guys, they're always acting the same.

I think people have such a thing about Bob Rock here that I wonder if it colors perceptions. And either way, the band has final approval on every step of the process here. Blame the individuals in the credits all you want, but at the end of the day this is the work the band signed off on. I think RAFRAG sounds huge, polished, well done over all, and I am super, super picky about things like this. There's no use in comparing how it sounds to albums that were recorded in 1994-1996.

I just checked George Marino's other credits and he's mastered other records I loved the sound of -- most notably Nada Surf's "Lucky," and loads of AC/DC mastering and re-mastering. If you want to hear a poorly mastered album, please allow me to introduce you to "Crash Love."

Compare how the drums sound in this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD1V5WusZSU&feature=channel) video to how they sound here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc4TeJJ4cBw). In the official version they just lack the punch they had in the clip from recording sessions. The record could still sound big and loud enough without compressing it more than necessary. There are worst cases than RAFRAG, but i still hope the next record would sound less muddy.

RAFRAG's dynamic range is 5-6 db. Way too flat. Sadly, this has become somewhat a standard for modern releases.

edit: There IS use in comparing how the albums sounded in '94 or earlier and how they sound now. Because it's actually sad that with all technology that is available today the albums sound worse than something from '92 for example. I shrug at the thought of how Nevermind would sound if it was released today (comparing to the modern albums the songs on it have twice as much dynamic range). Something like this, perhaps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-v6ML2DsBfA

I dunno if you've ever made an album in a studio, but our final mixes never sounded as insane as they did in the control room during playback. There's a lot that can color how it sounds, including how the control room is put together. Personally, I prefer the album version of the two clips there.

And, exactly...it's practically a standard for modern releases. Not the fault of any of the people called out here.

No, i've never recorded anything in a professional studio. We recorded a few songs, but we recorded them very un-professionally, and the sound wasn't the best. We borrowed some equipement, and recorded the instruments in some room we also practised in (no sound insulation whatsoever). I had a lot of work with mixing and mastering later, because our original recordings sounded muddy, and i managed to epand and clean up the sound a bit, and i used multi-band compression function to make guitars more powerfull. But i didn't compress the songs a lot, because the more i compressed them, the flatter they sounded. It was a good practise, i learned a lot with it.

It's hard to find a quieter and less compressed release today, and it's hard to blame certain individuals for that; if anyone should be blamed it should be the music industry itself, the way how things work in it (louder = better etc). I seriously hope that this trend would change soon. But what's more important than this is the actual content of the album, the songs. As long as they're great, i'll be happy. Though i would with they sounded the best way possible.

Even though they, presumably, own said copyright?

yes but since it hasn't been released, it hasn't been copyrighted. This is why historically we haven't heard much from the production stage. And this is normally the case with other bands. They don't want someone hearing it, stealing it, and getting it copyrighted before they do.

If it's "It's all good" like someone said and if in 2 weeks they're going to play some songs live they already had copyrighted that songs. I guess.

Acutally (and I really might be wrong because I am no specialist of common law countries)... The american copyright is automatic too. As soon as the song is put on a material (which is the case here, since well... they were recording it) you're protected. The registration is basically just a system of proof... :)

Thanks Harley. That's what I thought...I was going to say, I thought they previewed a few songs from RAFRAG on tour in Japan before it was released and didn't have the risk of those songs being stolen and copyrighted by someone else.

AMEN!

hoping this is just a bridge or anything cause if its the Theme or lead of the song, its painfully close to "Times Like these" By the Foo Fighters...

Every song is basically another song :) Not from the Offspring per se, but in general.

I honestly thoght it was a cover for the first few seconds!

It's obviously not the same song, but I was going to say it reminds me of Foo Fighters.

I couldn't agree more, I love the overall sound of that whole album.

Thats also the first album they used digital instead of analog recording (I think so, in various Americana videos and Pictures of the studio you see many computers and whatnot)
