!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually really like it, it kinda reminds me of something from conspiracy of one... but with something else.

At first at the intro I was reminded of the first times we heard Hammerhead and Half Truism, the riff sounded like yet another variation on that but glad to see they didn't reuse it a third time :)

It's already on my ipod, I'm gonna be held over until release now :)

FINALLY!!!!!

I really enjoyed it. Sounds fucking fantastic!

Let's try and figure out the lyrics to this song. I having a hard time understanding what Dex sings during the verses, but the chorus is pretty clear.

Chorus
You will find a way, I know, I know
You will find a way, I know
Too many yesterdays, I know, I know
You will find a way
I know!

I really like it, not going to analyze it too much since the quality isn't that great, especially on the vocals.

That said, I really dig the vocal melodies, i just wish i could make out the lyrics. I get a sort of 90s alt rock vibe about it - I absolutely adore the scream at 330.

Wow! Thank you SO MUCH for posting it. I really hate the rip-off obsessed people, but, man... Gotta admit it sounds a lot like Foo Fighters' "Times Like These", it's not a bad thing, though, I love the Foo Fighters, and that song is alright.

I'm in love with this song, btw. I've been listening to it over and over.

An attempt (http://rapidshare.com/files/401042163/The_Offspring_s_new_song_-_Debuted_6_18_10.mp3.html)

I tried to boost the drums and rhthym guitars. The overlaying guitar is so overwhelmingly loud. Its a little cleaner than it was.

The main riff didn't make me think Foo Fighters, and I still think it's no more similar than coincidence, but I thought the meter and tone of the verse sounded like Foo Fighters. But, that's also the part I could hear the least, so I'm hoping it sounds more unique to the offspring on a better recording.

AWESOME! As said over and over again, clearly influenced by Times Like These, but that's not a bad thing at all, you can hear influences on all bands.

I really like this one, both verse, chorus and the riff. And as Free? said - "chorus being calmer than verses is another new thing for guys. I dig". Exactly, the chorous sounds so nice! For crying out loud, stop with this "this sounds like ____________________" crap. It's getting annoying. How many bands have they ripped off by now? Oh yes, it's a long list of artists, including:

-Green Day
-Coldplay
-Linkin Park
-Foo Fighters
-Nirvana
-The Letters Organise
-Panic! At The Disco
-The Offspring (yes, they even ripped off themselves)

I could go on. Just stop with these things. It doesn't sound nearly as similar to Times Like These as one could think by reading this thread. And another big difference: i can't stand Times Like These, it's just too bland for my liking, but i love this song.

Agreed agreed agreed. It's ridiculous how people, even some of the biggest Offspring fans, like to try and make a good situation bad by complaining about how similar a song is to another. Who gives a fuck?! Every song that exists is slighty similar to another song that exists.

This song is awesome. Period.

THANK U!!!Rock music is rock music there's no way to have no small similarities between songs!

If all ppl thought this way there should be no more rock bands in the world after the 1st rock band ever was made cause the rest would be considered to copy the 1st one

EDIT: generally ppl use past knowledge as a basis to create something brand new and gorgeous :-)

Seeing that many people agree with my statement i'm probably not the only "normal" person :p

But yeah, it's getting ridiculous. I remember how it was when RAFRAG was released, hordes of trolls accusing The Offspring ripping off Nirvana, maybe even The Kinks, The Letters Organise thingy, Rise and Fall being a rip-off of American Idiot (like American Idiot sounded original in the first place - see Dillinger Four...), and others. I am willing to bet we'll have a few angered Foo Fighters fans after the new Offspring album comes out, and a few threads about Times Like These and this new song.

Anyway, i'm giving a shot myself, i'll try to make the recording of the song sound a bit better. I'll upload it when i'm done.

edit: not much progress so far, gotta play with equalisers and multiband compressor a bit more

It's not clear enough for me to make a real judgment on it.

My thoughts exactly ... for everyone to be passing out opinions on the new song based on the bad quality recording we have heard, does absolutely nothing for the song. Lets rather wait until we hear a better recording or the new album itself.

Bah. I'm so sick of everyone here always trying to say they ripped people off. I vaguely hear a similarity in the riff to the Foo Fighters song, but the song as a whole does not sound like Times Like These. It's always people who don't really know anything about music who make these claims... just relax and enjoy the music. It's really rare that people actually rip someone off, and this is not one of those times.

It's especially funny when people claim they ripped off a really famous modern hit. When people rip others off, they generally try to steal unfamous songs so they don't get caught. It's logic.

All that said, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of this song. It's not a BAD song, but it feels like kind of a generic rock song... not very Offspring-y. However, it's a low-quality live recording. I'll withhold judgement until I hear something in good quality. It's very possible that the band is moving toward more of a rock phase, rather than punk, based on the last album. I could dig that, but I just hope the rest of the album feels a bit more original than this one. :)

My thoughts exactly ... for everyone to be passing out opinions on the new song based on the bad quality recording we have heard, does absolutely nothing for the song. Lets rather wait until we hear a better recording or the new album itself.

I remember when Half-Truism was first played live, and I loved it from the start. The audio quality wasn't good, but you could understand the melody, and that alone was enough for me to really like it.

Hope they release a studio version soon, or at least a better live quality video. :D

I think people are getting so defensive about the Times Like These similarity because they can hear it aswell.
Don't be fucking dumb, the similarity is there, did we say it was a rip off? No. Do we enjoy the song? Yes.

Rooster
06-21-2010, 04:00 AM
Maybe the similarity is there. And maybe you didn't say it's a ripoff. What bothers me is that the first thing some people thought when they heard this song is it's similar to Times Like These. Who the fuck cares about that, seriously! And it's really annoying, since there already was a lot of bitching and comparing The Offspring songs to other artists when RAFRAG came out. This sounds like this song, this sounds like that song and so on. It's pointless.

I didn't even think about it being similar to Times Like These when i first heard that 15 second clip, until i read some comments on it. So thanks for ruining this song a bit for me by associating it with Times Like These, which is just bland and boring in my opinion (i'm trying to get this association out of my mind, despite there's only one riff that sounds remotely similar ti TLT). On the other hand, i don't really like Foo Fighters in the first place. Grohl is fantastic behind the drum kit, but not so much as Foo Fighters' frontman. They're too boring but that's just my opinion.

So thanks again, assholes.

P.S.: Wanna hear two nearly identical riffs? Here you go: Judas Priest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1kU63eHsMo) and Iron Maiden (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFZJY1JR0eI). Now THAT'S similarity

It's comments like "this sounds exactly like that" that bother me, and AGAIN, we've already had anough of comparisons of The Offspring songs with any other artist imaginable, and after you've seen many such comparisons already it starts to get on your nerves. It's nothing personal against any of you, it's just... Can't you just... You know, listen to the song and enjoy it? We'll have dozens of Foo Fighters hardcore fans bitching about this song in the future of this board (after the album is released), so at least wait until then, so we can live in peace until then.

Do you get what's bothering me (and some others) now?

I personally am a huge Foo Fighter fan as well as an Offspring fan. Though some F.F. fans may not be excited I am absolutely ecstatic about this song. I did hear some of the Times Like These INFLUENCE in this song and loved it. A great guitar riff with Noodle's spin and Dexter's vocals attached, incredible! People need to remember that there is nothing wrong with influence, and I am sure that a musician such as Dave Grohl (lead singer of Foo Fighters) would be honored to hear that his music had influenced another great band such as The Offspring. After all many of his songs had direct Zeppelin influence. (See The Pretender) Keep on kick'n ass Offspring! I can't wait to hear the studio version.

Why the hell is Foo Fighters still being discussed here? I'm sure there is some Foo Fighters song that sounds like a rip off from The Offspring, but the people on the FF bbs aren't complaining about it.

it really isnt reminiscent, it is more like, yeah, that sounds like it...reminiscent is different...the first thing i thought of was the foo fighters' song, before anything else.

the flow, the feel, the opening verse, the rift, even the whaling by dexter is all in "times like these"

plus, well...the offspring kind of had other songs that sound like other songs, as pointed out in the past...

they could be coincidence, but after-a-while when a band does that, plus repeats a lot of their same techniques, you wonder about the effort or the effectiveness of the band...it's just one song, a live song...im just saying as to why it would be frustrating if you were a fan of the band...i guess expectations are always too high.

What a shitty song. Thank God the next album is their last one.

Please don't come on these boards if you're gonna say stuff like that. I've listened to the song like, 50 times now. At first I was uneasy about it, but the more and more I listen, the more I love it. It's really great. You can tell that the song actually has meaning to it. It's not just a testament to how fast they can slide their fingers up and down the fretboard in a power chord shape. There's really something here with this song, and it's beautiful. Just because it may sound similar to another song doesn't mean it's shitty. It really isn't that similar when you really listen. Trust me. Give it a chance and please don't ever say anything like that about my beloved Offspring boys again.

it really isnt reminiscent, it is more like, yeah, that sounds like it...reminiscent is different...the first thing i thought of was the foo fighters' song, before anything else.

Weird, because the first thing I thought of was The Damned, specifically the riff towards the end of "Wait For The Blackout" (just before 'There is no vision here...'). I think people overthink this stuff a lot on these forums...people get upset about the lack of updates, then the band gives us a new song and people pick it apart.

It's like last night...I went to see the New Pornographers, and the guy behind me was super pissed that "Streets Of Fire" wasn't on the set list, which they barely if ever play. Later someone else called it out as a request, and Carl agreed to do it but he needed a few minutes for Neko and Dan to help him remember how it goes. The guy behind me who was dying to hear this song got impatient and started yelling insults and shit at Carl for taking too long. It's like, dude, he is trying to play your song, why you gotta shit on him?

I feel like a lot of the things people get disappointed about with the Offspring are things that people expect them to do with little basis in reality -- things that they would want their ideal favorite band to be or do. But all they can be is themselves. Dexter has made some clear musical references to other bands in the past. He's probably doing it again here. Why does it still surprise anyone?

To everyone else with an open mind (or ear): don't let the bashers bring you down or get you upset. The Offspring is the kind of band that experiments with their sound while at the same time keep the core of their style intact, in other words, a great band. 8 albums, 8 sounds, same heart. Hey Wannabe. Free? took the words right out of my mouth. You don't have to like everything the Offspring does. You don't have to post about how much you want to make sweet sweet love to anything that leaves their studio. But you do have to respect them, and if all you want to do is take a giant shit on their collective head, you can leave. Kthxbai.

So you're gonna be at the Taste of MN? I'm hoping to catch them on the 1st at Summerfest in Wisconsin and then on the 5th at the Taste of MN :) If you don't still think I'm superbitch, we should meet up and have a beer :-P

Edit: I'd totally record the song at both shows, but I don't have any type of video recording device besides my phone, which takes horribly low-quality videos. :(

When "Half Truism" came out in a bad quality video from a live recording a lot of people compared the song with My Chemical Romance's Helena. But, with the stuio version of "Half Truism", we saw that the song was completely different. Only some parts were similar to the MCR song, but the studio version is too different.

With this new song, problably we are having the same feeling. The video isn't too good to have solid conslusions about the song. Problably, the studio version has a melody with some similarities with "Times Like These", but this new song will have its own particularities, like "Half Truism" has.

It's too early to have conclusions about the sonority of this song.

Just enjoy the new song. It's not like the usual Offspring, that make fast and punk songs, but it's a good rock song. And all of us know that they like to go in new directions, not only punk rock. It's The Offspring as they are.

That's exactly what I thought. They did say they were going to revisit some of the stuff they left off Splinter and Conspiracy, maybe this is a result of them revisiting some of that stuff?

Fuck you Dexterwannabe, The Offspring are not victims to stagnation!

I welcome this change, and so does %99 of the board, like your pretty much saying that it's bad becuase its not punk, they're not NOFX, so fuck off.

Don't you think it would of been better if you would of just been like "i don't really like it, but thats my opinion" I mean, what are you trying to prove?

BigFish

So, according to you, this board is only for people who loves exactly everything The Offspring writes, says och does? I love The Offspring, but the difference between you and me is that I actually have the ability to judge and review music in a logical way. My all time favourite album is Ignition and The Offspring are the reason I got into music. But at the same time I want The Offspring to write good music, and I do not think that this new Times Like Theese-cover is good music. This is not The Offspring I love.

First of all, it's not a Times Like These cover. You're just an angry prick who can't accept change. The band is growing up and evolving. OF COURSE their sound is going to change. I love every single one of their albums and for different reasons. Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace was a fucking brilliant album and I love it just as much as all of the others. Do you even fucking realize the amount of time these guys put into making 13 songs? They spent 5 years doing it. 5 years for 40 minutes of material. That's a lot of dedication and hard work. If you can't respect what they're doing, then just shut up. They are still, and always will make great music. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean they aren't the same band. They've grown up and just want to try something else. NO ONE stays the same forever, and part of appreciating something is having the ability to accept their changes and support what they're doing no matter what.

anyone got a setlist for these shows?

would greatly appreciate someone PMing me with one.

If i can remember the setlist correctly,
they played all of the singles except for Original Prankster & Hit That.
They also played Americana, Have You Ever, & Staring at the Sun.
I don't exactly remember what order though D:
But I'm pretty sure that's what they played the other night.

Comparing the live version and the studio clip, I got a general idea of what the song sounds like. imo, I don't think it sounds like Times Like These by Foo Fighters.

I'm liking the more mature alternative rock approach they are taking to their music. It's refreshing.

It's nothing wrong with noting it's perhaps being influenced by the song. I'm more bothered by the posts that seem to point out that the songs are too similar, or that the first thing a person thought about the song was "Times Like These". They might not be stating directly that the song is a ripoff or something, but some people do that. And here comes the "angered Foo Fighters fans" part. We've had Nirvana fans complaining. I'm Nirvana fan myself, but i don't give a shit if a riff in Hammerhead sounds similar to the main riff in Stay Away, since the songs are otherwise completely different. But SOME fans (every band has fans that are like that) are just bitching and shouting "ripoff ripoff" or something. We've had this in the past, and im sure the whiners will make a glorious comeback after the album is released. And my comments are directed at those people, not you or people with similar thoughts, since you seem to be reasonable :)

Maybe i was annoyed by the comments that point out similarities (though they're faint) just because i was subconsciously linking those comments with previous ripoff bitchfests on this forum.

edit: Sorry for a late reply. And, as i've seen by now, the "Times Like These Cover Wars" have already started.

Hi. I'm glad there's a new song and I really liked it. But...
I'm usually against people who keep saying they rip off because most of the time the similarities are not that big and stuff. So when I saw people complaining about being similar to a Foo Fighters song I got curious. So I went to youtube and looked for the song, since I didn't remember it. And I gotta say... It's indeed very similar.

The melody itself ISN'T, but, how can I say... the overall feel of the song, tempo and keys, everything. The guitar riff is 99% the same. Also, the chorus's voice melody is very different but ... the keys are mostly the same.

I'm not feeling good about this, at all. The Offspring is my favourite band, and I never agreed with people claiming similarities before. But this time... I can't not hear it.

I'm worried. If they release this song, it'll do more damage than good. Many people are seeing it, not just a few. Critics will completely destroy them. They'll be called out of prime hacks and their new album will suffer greatly for it.

It's a good song, I really like it. And there are so many songs that similarities between them do and will always exist. I'm not saying they did it on purpose. But in the end, that doesn't really matter, because the public and critics will not buy that's just a coincidence. The song is so similar to Times Like These that if they release it it'll be damaging to their carreer.

So I'm really worried for them. :(

I'd like to see the band's opinion on it. If they were not aware of the similarities, and what are they going to do now. I think they should change it a bit, I don't know. All I know is that they must do something.

I'm sorry, i don't mean to be insulting at all, but are you deaf? The main rif isn't anywhere near to being 99% the same. You are one of those people who make things look far worse than they really are.

Just look up a few things, and you'll see what similarity really means. For example, American Idiot (the song) is almost an exact copy of a song by Dillinger Four, and we all know how well American Idiot (the whole album, not just the song) did on the charts. Secondly, look up one of my previous posts in this thread, you'll find the links to a song by Judas Priest and a song by Iron Maiden. The main riff in the Maiden song sounds almost like an exact copy of the song by Judas Priest.

Seriously, listen to the song a bit more. You'll see it's really not that similar.

Oh, and about the "feel" of the song. It doesn't seem so similar either, and even if it were - so what, is the "feel" something that's copyrighted?

I actually kinda agree with him. Like Swordsman, I never saw any real similarity between The Offspring and other songs they supposedly ripped off. I don't think they did it on purpose, but I think it's bad when I can sing "Times Like These" along with the main riff and verse and have them match up very well.

Let me reiterate: I don't think the band ripped anyone off. However, the perception that they did can indeed be very damning. I'm also kind of worried about it, and I don't think this should be a single. Whether they did it intentionally or not, the mere perception that they did can be very toxic.

Edit: And I've never been one of those people who look to make things worse than they really are.

Listen, as someone who plays the guitar and actually understands music, the songs ARE NOT that similar. The opening riff may sound faintly similar...but it's really not. Other than that, nothing even comes close to being similar. Now, I know that the average music fan isn't going to notice/care about this, but it's true. Please listen and stop the spam about Times Like These. This song trumps that song by about 400x. It is not that similar and it never will be. They didn't rip it off and it's original. PLEASE KNOCK IT OFF. Thank you.

Before anyone else bitches about the "guitar players understand more" point of your post - well in some way it's true, from the technical point of wiew, how something is played and so on. But otherwise i don't think this is a really strong argument in this case, as we're discussing the overall sound. But i get what you mean, i play guitar too. I just wanted to reply in a polite manner, before anyone would start with insults or something :)

Other than that i agree with you, the songs really aren't that similar. If any Offspring song is similar to another then that's Rise and Fall, similar to American Idiot (which is a huge ripoff of Dillinger Four anyway, at least Rise and Fall sounds a bit more different). But this song and Times Like These? No. Just no.

You know what, I really don't think there's need to be worried about it being a single. People have said that Self Esteem, WDYGAJ and others were rip offs as well, and nothing serious happend.

I'm a big Foo Fighters fan, but I honestly didn't hear any resemblance the first time I heard the new Offspring song. When I was about to hear the song, I was expecting to hear an Offspring song, and that's what I heard. Only later when I saw the comments on it being like Times Like These is when I saw a small resemblance to the vocals.

I really don't think there's reason to worry if this song becomes a single (which I'm sure it will, just as Hammerhead was).

Intro sounds a lot like Times like theese which everyone already has said. But I dont mind, both are awesome songs.

And i dont think there is any danger if this is a single. Lots of songs sound like each other. As long as the whole song isnt a ripoff or they are using the exact same melody there is no problem.

Good song, looking forward to the album.

I understand that you guys might be fed up with some disappointed fans pointing to the alleged similarity between the new song and a Foo Fighters' hit.
Yet, it strikes me that if they don't like the track because it reminds them of another band, there's nothing wrong with that. Music is something you shouldn't perceive rationally. You can't just say : "Ok, I don't like the song because it strikes me as being similar to "Times like These", but so many guys keep telling that it's not similar at all. So I should stop thinking that there's any resemblance and perhaps it will grow on me". Personally, I like this song to some extent, but I'm far from being excited. Maybe it has nothing to do with the above-mentioned similarity, but when I first watched a short youtube video with the main riff of the new song in the background, Foo Fighters was my immediate association.

Anyway, I can't wait to hear more stuff from the Offspring. I'm sure they have some kick-ass songs up their sleeve :)

Well, as any fandom, I understand people being very protective of their idols. But some of you need to chill out. I was polite, I showed I'm an Offspring suporter, a fan, and respect them, and never EVER agreed with the allegations before, and even then I get hammered. Wow. That attitude screams "denial".

Seriously...

Look, you don't know me because I'm more of a lurker. I'm not one of "those people who gets things out of proportion", are you kidding me? I'm the opposite of that, I can't stand "those people". I'm fan of music, films, games. As such I'm constantly in touch with other fans, and at least 50% of them are extremely annoying and radical, thinking their opinions are the only right ones and etc. I'm not one of those.

And that's precisely why I'm not over-protective. I'm able to take criticism of the things I like without getting all crazy about it. And it's not because I don't play guitar (only piano and silly stuff like that) that I'm musically retarded.

But maybe I've become deaf last week and didn't even notice it. The problem is: I'm not the only one. And if there are enough deaf people, it could be bad.

I don't think they did it on purpose, because that would be stupid, and I regard them as better than that. People who steal songs go to obscure sources. So in my opinion, it's probably a coincidence, but if I say I'm 100% certain of that, it would be a lie. After all I'm not a part of the band and even people we know and love, father, mother, brothers, can dissapoint us. That's part of life, nobody is perfect, and I'm sure The Offspring aren't either.

I try to be as peacefull as possible. I won't ever fight someone on the internet. I just can't lie to myself. As someone else said, the songs match, and not only a little. They match a lot.

The Offspring got me into modern music, I used to listen only to classic music when little. They were my first band, and I have immense respect for them. But I won't ignore the facts. And the fact is, that similar songs or not, many deaf people are thinking they are. And that could be harmfull. So I think I do have reason to worry. I worry precisly because I love The Offspring too much not to.

PS: and as I also said before, I personally really like the song, and don't care much if it suffers from "strong similarities". But I hope it'll be the only song in the album that suffers from that.

The problem is not people noticing similarities between the two songs. The issue is that people are making judgements about what the song soungs like based on a crappy video filmed in front of Noodles' amp, over emphasizing the lead guitar, which makes it sound so much like the Foo Fighters song. The 'in the studio' clip presents a much more Offspring sound and style with a very different tone.

Why don't we wait until we hear a final mix when the single is released before anyone cries foul? okay? sound good everyone?

The 15 seconds of the studio version. Is it really THAT MUCH similar as some of you are implying? I didn't even notice the similarities until it was mentioned here. And there is no way that the riff is 99% the same as somebody said. I guess it all comes down to personal perceprions, but come on... REALLY? That "deaf" part was referring to this. Subjectivity or not, you really have to take another listen, as it's not as bad. There are faint similarities, but not enough for the songs to sound like copies, and that's more evident in the studio clip, because the sound is very different from FF.

And yes, i know both songs. The difference is that i hate Times Like These, and love this one.

Exactly. A lot of ass-kissing.
The song is OK, but the riff thingy has to go. So, Dexter/Bob Rock/Whoever, if you're reading this just colour that part with some octaves and chazam, it will not sound like the FF!

Seriously? Being respectful of the band is kissing their ass, not common courtesy? Not taking a shit on someone's head because they're excited about the new song when you're not is kissing the band's ass? The world is not so black and white. It'd be a lot simpler if it were. All we're asking anyone to do is not be a dick to people here. End of story. If that's too much to ask, there's always 4chan.

I'm sorry, I have a really difficult time caring if anyone is "kissing the band's ass" or not. This is a place for fans. Fans are sometimes excited about what the band is doing. Sometimes, they are very excited. This is okay. It's okay to love something a great deal. It's not okay to try making someone who is super excited/loving what they're doing feel like they should pretend they don't. I'm not asking you to be as excited as they are. I'm not even asking you to care what the band is doing. All I'm asking you to do is not pick on the people who are excited. Shouldn't be that hard.

I always love that plagiarism accusation everytime I read it. Not only on the Offspring board but everywhere else.

Not so long ago, someone said that a french band called the Wampas made a song that sounded very similar to "One Fine Day". Well that's true. But I'm a hundred percent sure that the Wampas didn't think of the Offspring while writing it.

Also, plagiarism is a civil offense. With rules and all...

Usually the rule is "if some stuff sounds similar, well that happens. If the global sound of the song sounds similar, that's plagiarism".

And let's see. Oh yeah the intro riff sounds very similar in both songs and... that's it !

So Foo Fighters guys here, you see, we are not in denial, you are. It simply isn't plagiarism and arguing otherwise is denying the truth of what plagiarism is.

Theres nothing wrong with being excited, if people love the song, I dont think people are going to have a go at them for that, even if they hate it themselves.

The problem is when someone says "it sounds like Times like These", you always end up getting pounced on by some fanboys/kiss-asses/whatever you wanna call them, just because you place a slightly negative opinion on an Offspring matter. Thats the issue.

My personal opinion is, i love the song, i think it sounds quite different, and thats the reason why i love the Offspring, even though I do prefer the style of their old music. This is quite fresh and its something I can probably enjoy at some gatherings with mates. But still, no-one can deny the similarities to Times Like These. Not that I care about the similarity, I love both songs, but its definitely there.

You're going to get that on every fansite. People are passionate about the band, and they will passionately defend them. But again, if you're voicing your criticisms in a way that remains respectful (protip: "kiss-asses and obsessive douchebags" is not an example of this), you have a leg to stand on when telling them that they have to be respectful of you in return.

I think this is not the real problem here. Similarities are there, however the songs aren't that much similar so you could call them copies, i think we can agree on that.

The majority of users here have problems with people, who are trying to convince us that both songs sound practically the same. THAT'S the problem. It's just annoying, as it isn't as bad, and from what we can hear from studio clip the sound will be more different in the official CD version than it seems from the live version. Similarities yes (although i still think they're faint and nothing to get picky about), but ripoff NO. This is the whole point. Get it?

But this goes back to the point Black Swordsman and I tried to make. We're concerned that when this gets critical appraisal, the same accusations may arise. I could absolutely see some critic writing something to the effect of:

"'You'll Find A Way,' the album's first single sounds, to be kind, like an updated rendition of Foo Fighter's classic 'Times Like These.' The former, of course, will always be a classic while 'You'll Find A Way' shows why the Offspring's creativity remains in serious doubt."

Black Swordsman and I both said we like the song. And our ability to see the similarity does not conflict with our appreciation of the song. But not everybody is able to do that, especially with the snobbery found in album reviews.

Should I care what music critics think? Probably not; they've been pummeling on the band for years. However, I would like the band's album to do well and not have to hear "zomg it sounds like Foo Fighters" from people who get paid for their professional opinion. And I'm afraid it will happen.

DMelges
06-28-2010, 03:47 PM
Even if that does happen, it's only one song that has a similarity. I doubt that other songs from the album will be compared. Actually I don't doubt it, because some people live to do such things. But really, who cares?

The more I listen to the song, and the more I sing along to it, the more it sound different to Times Like These. Sing along to the offspring song and you'll see that the way Dex sings it is very different. Only the verses' structure is similar. The main riff is not similar in my opinion.

Rooster
06-28-2010, 03:48 PM
True, broathdave, that probably would happen. It happens all the time, and usually with the critics that are the kind of people who would (if they were in their teenage years) come to this forum and post about how The Offspring ripped off Foo Fighters. But i'm afraid there's not much you can do about this. There are a lot of assholes among professional critics.

well, obviously... but many of us already have and those who haven't will eventually. HOWEVER, standing by your favorite band, no matter what they do, isn't insanity... it isn't "obsessiveness"... it isn't "ass-kissing". While the powers that be may keep a tab on what goes on around here, there aren't any asses present to kiss. And those of us who just accept the way they do things and the decisions they make understand that it isn't our choice. While so many people may like to see ignition era type new music and nothing but more obscure offspring tunes live, most of the people at the concerts aren't gonna be diehard fans who know every word to their discography. People who are casual listeners will stop going to the concerts if the offspring doesn't play songs they know. Then they stop making money on tours and have to stop touring.

A lot of people only have the Greatest Hits cd. Get over it.

Well its certainly better than the one from Vegas with all the views! And it may be cutting in and out but its still pretty good. Ya but the point is it has nothing to do with my camera, its only because of how I am putting my finger over the microphone. And Personally I dont really get any other lyrics more out of his video then mine, except for maybe the very beginning of the video and even then you can't understand what Dexter is saying.
