Even weirder, the opposing candidate had this on his website.

I don't want to blame Sarah Palin for this, but Republicans need to cool down the gun puns. As for the last picture, they also need to learn how to punctuate.

This happened in my home town. I drove by that very same Safeway last night. Gabrielle Giffords is even graduated from the same high school I graduated from. This whole thing has hit a little too close to home for me... Everyone I know is shaken up, especially some of my friends who actually knew the shooter.

If you want to know some even weirder stuff, the 9-year-old who died was born on September 11th, 2001.

Everything seems a bit too surreal for me right now. I can't even think of anything to say right now. I think I'll just go to bed...

That was pretty fucking disturbing. Are there any news about the identity of the alleged murderer?

There may have been an accomplice, but this man is the shooter:

One year older than me, and went to a high school about twenty minutes from mine.

Charles Manson didn't tell his followers to kill anyone, either. He just told them who he didn't like and where they lived.

^I can't tell if that's a joke or not?

My favorite commentary on this topic thus far:

"Itís not Sarah Palinís fault a violent undiagnosed schizophrenic shot those people, but Iím super-glad I didnít put up a map like that" - Eugene Mirman

I wasn't joking. If you take politics completely out of the equation, Palin is a charismatic leader with a fanbase that isn't looking for substance, if you will. They're looking to be steered. And when you pump your rhetoric full of violence and vitriol, it's a matter of time before someone takes it too far. And the tweets Palin has posted and deleted since the shooting are fucking disgusting, basically trying to backpedal and make it seem like that map was an okay thing to do. Well, I guess that's why the map was deleted from her website.

Mirman is right on the money. It's not Palin's fault this crazy guy shot into a crowd, but she's not helping.

This is more or less what I feel about the situation. It's tragic and all, but I'm finding myself bemused at the awkward predicament Palin is in more than anything else. I'm probably being somewhat insensitive here.

I don't think the comparison is fair. I doubt Palin wanted anyone dead.

I'm sure this isn't what Palin had in mind, and the shooting may not even be related. But this shit, in general, needs to stop.

I read an article earlier today that I really agree with: But even so, the tragedy wouldn't change this basic fact: for the past two years, many conservative leaders, activists, and media figures have made a habit of trying to delegitimize their political opponents. Not just arguing against their opponents, but doing everything possible to turn them into enemies of the country and cast them out beyond the pale. Instead of “soft on defense,” one routinely hears the words “treason” and “traitor.” The President isn't a big-government liberal—he's a socialist who wants to impose tyranny. (http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/georgepacker/2011/01/judging-from-his-internet-postings.html)

Also what Olbermann had to say: violence, or the threat of violence, has no place in our democracy. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40981503/ns/msnbc_tv-countdown_with_keith_olbermann/)

All very true. But even if Palin doesn't really want people hurt, she should probably take responsibility for propagating so much violent rhetoric.

Oh yeah, definitely. Shit like that needs to end, in general. She knows millions and millions of people listen to her, she has to know some percentage of them are violent people incapable of thinking for themselves. Like, if George Soros was attacked, I'd be convinced it had something to do with Glenn Beck.

Posters to various message boards tell stories of seeing bumper stickers with the message "Pray for Obama—Psalm 109:8" on the highway, only to look up the verse and find, "Let his days be few; and let another take his office." People — like the commenter "Panama" on INGunOwners.com, to pick one guy completely at random — think this is "too funny." The next verse in Psalms is, "Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow." (http://gawker.com/5407568/christian-conservatives-praying-for-god-to-kill-obama)

This is really old, but this is exactly the type of thing I am talking about, what the fuck is wrong with these people?

I feel the same: it's pretty amusing watching people like registered asshole Rush Limbuagh attempting to defend Palin or even his own obnoxious rhetoric in the wake of this event.

Also, in off topic news: Tom DeLay was sentenced to jail: it's a good day.

I don't know. I've been avoiding coverage of the shooter.

Very little is known about him except that he was very deeply troubled. His parents have avoided media contact and only released a short statement asking for the media to respect their privacy and stating their sympathies to the victims and their families. The impression I got from their neighbors, though, wasn't so much as a leftist bunch. I couldn't really tell, though. I think a few of my friends knew him, though. I could ask them.

Which one?Either or both. The guy was a fucking nut and there isn't one shred of evidence that he was in any way inspired by or had even seen the Palin website. The guy wasn't even concerned with political ideology or affiliation. He hated politicians in general and he just happened to be familiar with Giffords from a previous encounter.

Still Palin is one stupid, power hungry, warmongering bitch. This incident won't be well for her reputation. Crosshairs, she really couldn't came with anything else? Tragic part is she's over 45, she can't change[recover] from now on, even if she wants to.

Her base doesn't care. They don't even know what she stands for. Nobody does. This is the first candidate on the presidential ticket never to have a press conference(unprecendted I think). Her speeches are written for her, her questions are usually submitted in writing ahead of time. When she speaks it's generic, it lacks any substance whatsoever. Some drivel about lower taxes, smaller government, families, and her usual catchphrases. They're buying into a persona, which gives her tons of wiggle room in what she actually does as long as she keeps the act up.

It seems to me like this is some kind of tokenism where the Republicans just want to have that one woman up there and then let her be just the same as the previous candidates.
