One of my favorite bands ever, and one of the first ones I ever seriously got into (second to Collective Soul and The Bottle Rockets). I've been listening to these guys since I was like 12. They recorded almost every type of music at one point or another in their career --- Redneck Wonderland is full of crazy super-experimental (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbtDVttEtGM) industrial-type stuff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XI0-SlaraUs), Diesel and Dust is mostly folk and acoustica, 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 is just wonderful (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMQx8e7hzjs&feature=related) and weird (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEEnwkJjrFI&feature=related) new-wave....they do everything from melodic and poppy, to sometimes artsy and punky, to sometimes just plain fucking weird. You never really know what to expect when you pop in a new Midnight Oil album (although there is somewhat of a theme of quirky 80's oddness throughout a lot of their work). Also, Peter Garrett has some of the most notoriously goofy dancing in the history of the music video, shooting almost all the way into the realm of Crazy Awesome. And best of all (for me anyway), their lyrics were always about something; they were very, very political for a non-punk band. The singer even went on to become the President of the Australian Conservation Foundation for 10 years after the band broke up.

Who Can Stand In The Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fs7AtPqtCI0) and Helps Me Helps You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPxsfdIEDHY&feature=related) deal with capitalism and backroom politics. One of their better known songs is Beds Are Burning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejorQVy3m8E&NR=1), which somehow manages to both be about the Aboriginese and the environment. One of my favorite songs by them, though, is Warakurna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9bj3qttT4U), which I can't seem to find a good video of on Youtube. If you can track down the original version, it's pretty badass.

Midnight Oil = pretty badass 80s band? Or are you guys Oil haters? Discuss!

Yeah, they're pretty good. I remember getting into their greatest hits album a while back. Power and the Passion, The Dead Heart, Dream World, and Beds Are Burning are all great songs.

The only song I've heard is Beds are Burning, but I remember liking it quite well.
