I just heard that they split up. What a shame.

Gah, bummer. I do like R.E.M. The only complaint is it seems like the last minute or so of almost every song is unnecessary.

But I opened this topic half expecting a death, so that's a load off.

The one that came out this year was really good. But eh they've been around for so long it was inevitable. Still a shame though. I'm gonna go snatch one of my mother's CD's and put it on my ipod right now.

Agreed. Accelerate wore off very very quickly. I think most of the positive response to that album was "OMGZ THEYRE PLAYING GUITARZ AGAIN," but before long I realized it was probably the most one-dimensional album they ever made. Collapse Into Now was great though, and a fine way for them to close out their long careers. I'm not sad that they're breaking up, even though they're one of my favorite bands ever. Most of all, I'm thrilled that I got to see them live once before they called it quits.

I don't know much about REM, but at this point in their careers, I have a feeling it was either outright quit, or just be largely inactive until they're just to old to do it anymore.

At least until a new "Best of" album (which has to be promoted) and a "Reunion tour" that is :p

It has happened before - it will happen again. ;)

And nothing of value was lost.

It's sad, given that they're more or less the band that defined my music tastes for much of my life, and the band i listened to religiously all through high school. but at the same time, they were old, and collapse into now is as good an album as any to be their last.

They will get back together in a few years and everyone will be surprised as if it wasnt inevitable.
