Christmas time has got me in the mood for giving. I just donated to PETA. But I'd also like to help other people too. So I thought I'd ask what other folks are doing.

What kind of volunteering or donating do you do?

None to any maniacal bullshit spinners like PETA.

I just donated to PETA. I hope you're joking. PETA is a terrorist organization controlled by crooks and lunatics. If you really want to help animals donating to the ASPCA is probably a better choice.

Nah, Propagandhi supports PETA and I love Propagandhi. Therefore, PETA is a good organization.

I do lots of community service through a student organization that I'm in. In 2011, I had about 90 hours of community service and aiding in raising over $10,000 for the local children's hospital through a charity dodgeball tournament and a 5k. I also helped raise $5,000 for the American cancer society. Actually, a few BBS members donated in my name for the last one, so thanks again to those who did!

When it comes to actual service projects, I did a lot of stuff for the Red Cross, a local charity that does yardwork for elderly shut ins, cleaning up local parks, and taking care of dogs at a local animal shelter, among quite a few others.

Really, I just like doing community service. I dunno why I just always have and I'm glad to do it whenever possible. Partially because I grew up in a rural area where my family was one of only a handful of families that were financially secure and I'm used to having friends who struggled to make ends meet, so I've always had a good sense of how lucky I am and therefore really feel that I'd be a bad person if I didn't give back.

Used to donate but not that often and much anymore. It's unfortunately too hard to find trustworthy organizations.

For example: A lot of organizations sell donated clothes instead of giving them to the ones in need and you'll never know where your clothes end up and who the beneficiaries of these practices are, donated money is being peculated and misled etc. and now there's Japan too:

Things that actually made me almost stop donating - for now I only give some money to the local animal shelter - there are people there I personally know and trust.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/free

The word "free" in the term "free software" does not mean "no price" (gratis), means refers to "freedom" (libre).

Free software give the user four characterising freedoms:

Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program for any purpose.
Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.
Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

I did a bit of volunteering for a local animal charity before. Nowadays I will give them a bit of money, and buy their cards/calenders etc, haven't volunteered in quite a while.

Last time I donated money was after the Tsunami in Japan this year, mostly because Playstation had a really easily accessible donation page on the PS3, given that Sony is a Japanese company.

Yeah.

I try to donate blood monthly. I'm B-, it can get needed easily.

I think it would be nice to give someone you know who is in need a gift anonymously. I'd like to actually do that one day.

Oh yeah, I donate blood too

Bighead, I've always wanted to do that too if I had more money. Or paying off layaways at toys r us or adopting a needy family for Christmas. I love that kind of stuff - wish I had the money now

I used to donate blood every couple of months. I haven't in a year or so because my schedule hasn't allowed it.
