That is, per definition, not true. And Dexter should know that.

I have absolutely nothing to do, so I'll over-analyze this title with you.

You're right, 'the future is now' is self-contradictory. It's an oxymoron. They never make sense.

On the other hand, it's a popular oxymoron in the sense that it promotes the idea that: "We should stop looking at our dreams and aspirations as distant possibilities. Rather, we should work to realize them now." The title may fit really well, I have to hear the song first though, or at least read the lyrics..

Weird name, I look forward to hearing this song..

At first it sounds like one of these motivational / inspirational quotes :p like "Live every day as if ..."

But could maybe be in the sense of that everything we're doing now might / will affect the future?!

P.S. Hm, what will tomorrow be (if the future is now)? ;) Ok, that was kind of lame ...

I thought it might be helpful for all the fans who do not want to take the time to read through this (http://offspring.com/community/showthread.php?t=45647) thread. I just realized that the people who haven't read through that long thread might not know we have a piece of The Future Is Now.

Thanks for sharing that; I haven't read that other thread, so I didn't know about this! From what we hear in that clip, I LOVE it! I hope this song is more typical for the album, rather than that "You will find a way" song. The chorus sounds badass.

This city's made of diamond(s)
And tomorrow grass will grow
All the freedom that's toward us?
They are coming after me

Flashback 1984
Now who's, knock knock, knock on the door
Folks, that starts a riot???
They are coming after me

Now! Life is not the same
I'm one
Sparks certain cue? ...?

Will you take what's in my head/hand?
wakes/makes me ...dead/deaf?
The future is now, now I disappear
Now take...?
Save me from the...?
The future is here, this is how I disappear

Money down the spiral
With the lie, a better man?
Showing progress is survival???

With all due respect to Degstur, I think the lyrics I've got here are a little more accurate.

This city is made of diamonds
And tomorrow grass will grow
All the freedoms that divide us
Now they're coming after me

Flashback, 1984
Now who's knock knockin at your door?
The conflict starts a riot
They're coming after me

Now, life is not the same
I am one
Sparks turn into flames

Will you take what's in my head
And erase me when I'm dead?
Cuz the future is now. Now, I disappear

???????
Save me from the light
Cuz the future is here. This is how I disappear.

Yes. I think it's "glass will grow" "Why?", you may ask. Well, Dexter said "glass" and it almost makes sense because in a city made of diamonds, maybe glass would grow.

I'm digging the new guitar sounds with the long, ringing notes during the intro and verse. Not sure whether that'll be reflective of the album, or if it's a gimmick to sound "futuristic," given the title of the song. Other than that, it sounded like typical Offspring fare. It definitely didn't sound bad, but I'm not as excited as I was when I heard the early demos of "Hammerhead" and "Half-Truism."

I guess I can hear similarities to Rise Against, but I wouldn't have noticed them on my own. At least it doesn't sound note-for-note like a specific song of theirs. Kind of like Nothingtown doesn't sound like any specific Green Day song, yet sounds like something that they might do.

Microwave Jellyfish

It does sound somewhat similar, then again, I don't really listen to Rise Against, and if I heard "Savior" before "Future is Now" I'd have said that they sound kinda like The Offspring. 'cept for the vocals, their singer isn't bad but ain't got a unique voice like Dex.

The breakdown (in Savior) is totally like the intro for Hammerhead IMO.

You're totally right, teachers aren't allowed to have really shitty laptop speakers ;) I normally hook up my external speakers when I really want to listen to stuff, but I wasn't about to do that to listen to a one-minute live clip. :P I will most *definitely* bust out the speakers when the album drops, though!

And as should be known, the audio was taken from these two videos:

Also, here is what I hear from they lyrics after lots of audio editing, removing noise, slowing it down/changing the tempo, etc. See the other thread for more details

The Future is Now

This city's made of diamonds
And tomorrow glass will grow
All the freedoms that divide us
They're coming after me

Flashback 1984
Now who's knock knocking at your door
The ____ ____ starts to riot
They are coming after me

Sparks turn into flames

Will you take what's in my head?
And erase me when I'm dead

‘Cause the future is here, this is how I disappear

Running down the spiral
With the lie, a better man

The hero yet to light us
They're coming after me

All the freedoms that divide us

I'm pretty sure it's "that knocking" and not "knock knocking". I've thought that all along, but figured I was the only one :)

I'm also pretty sure that it's "Running down the spiral, with a line, a better man", instead of "with the lie". I hear an 'n' in there, and it'd also make more sense.

I'm 100% sure that it's Now who's knock, knocking at your door...I've been listening to it over and over like 100 times and I've never heard 'that'..I clearly hear a 'n' sound at the beginning and 'k' sound at the end of the word...
By the second one I'm not that sure...I'd say that Running down the spiral with the lie,a better man would make more sense since a better man might be used ironically...and since he's lying,he's becoming a ''better'' man...on the other hand,I also hear a 'n' sound,so it might be line but don't know if it made sence...it might be the case that Dexter said a 'n' sound because there's a diphthong at the end of ''lie'' and there's a vowel at the beginning of ''A better man''...so this 'n' sound might be like some kind of intrusive...I don't know, this 'n' sound is not as clear for me as the one in KNOCK,knocking at your door....we'll see...but if it's THAT,I'll eat my own vomit.. :D but I'm 100% sure that it's not...

We'll just have to wait and see about "knock" vs "that", because they both make perfect sense, and we can't really be sure with a bad quality live recording. So I'll say for now that it could be either.

"with a line" would make sense - probably more sense - if he's talking about going down a spiral, holding on to a line or following a line.

In American English, though, you wouldn't put a /n/ sound between a dipthong and another vowel - in British English, they often put a /r/ between them, but not with an American (especially California) accent. Plus those intrusions are generally /r/ - I've never heard it with /n/.

But we'll see on both of these - the second one is more interesting than the first, because the meaning is different, depending on if it's line or lie. I'm getting more and more excited for this album! :)

That's a good point and makes sense; makes it seem more likely that it's "knock".

Its definitely knock knocking in my opinion.

dexterone, I like some of those changes you made to the lyrics. "The conflict starts a riot" makes sense and definitely sounds possible. EDIT: forgot to mention, I keep hearing "the foxhole starts a riot" but I don't know if this makes sense, which is why I never put it in the lyrics I posted. What do others think?

However I do still think it is "Can you save me from the light" in the chorus as I posted in my lyrics. I hear two syllables an no d on "save"

The line you are unsure about in the last verse I wasn't sure of either. At a minimum the first four words are definitely "No foul play no" in my opinion (first "No" MIGHT be "now", and I do think I hear string for the fifth. So "No foul play, no string ____ ____" Definitely two one-syllable words at the end. I'm now thinking "No foul play, no string to throw"

Thank you,man :) I think that it's And saved from the light because Day has turned to night and the night saved him from the light...I don't think that he would be asking if someone could save him...wouldn't make sense...and you're right,it's Now foul will instead of No...I already changed that yesterday..and I'm guessing that it's no foul will play no string at all....I hear ''at all'' at the end but I'm not sure...

Full version of the song!! So awesome! I don't think this song really sounds like "standard Offspring fare", as someone called it. It reminds me a bit of Lightning Rod, which will always be exceptional to me. Way excited to hear that intro, bridge, and ending in full studio sound.

Ok guys, here you go:

This cityís made of diamonds
And tomorrow glass will grow
On the freedoms that divide us
Theyíre coming after me
Flashback 1984
Now whoís knock-knocking at your door?
A thought that starts a riot
Theyíre coming after me now

Life is not the same
I am one but
Sparks turn into flames

Will you take whatís in my head?
And erase me when Iím dead?
Cause the future is now
And now Iím disappearing

The day has turned to night
Can you save me from the light?
Cause the future is here
And this is how I disappear

Running down a spiral
With the light of better men
Shouting progress is survival
Take one last look and see me
Now you see me, now you donít
No vow to break
No string of hope
My hero, your pariah
Theyíre coming after me now

Life is just godís game
I am one but
Sparks turn into flames

And you get what you deserve
When revenge is what you serve
Cause the future is now
And now Iím disappearing

Iíll sink into the night
And Iím turning off the lights
Cause the future is here
And this is how I disappear

So the endís what you make it
And thatís what youíre looking for
This is the future
The future is now

Now turn off the lights
The skies are blue inside you
Turn off the lights

Ah soon time for the album, the future's soon here!

What a killer song and text (cool that there's different refrains, "and you get what you deserve")! Glad to hear the whole song after those 1-minute clips. Great riff. Nice how they build up the song, the slow part in the end (and the intro) makes everything stop, then it kickstarts again with a couple of hits by Pete. The bass sounds badass, I like the line. Nice to just hear the bass and some high notes from Noodles in the verse. And of course, Dexter's high-pitching voice sounds _remarkable_.

I like the details. Cool to hear how Noodles don't do the song straight forward, but uses different, uhm, you know, strummings or whatever (2:17, 2:26 2:55, 3:55). And as someone said earlier, Pete hitting the drum twice for knock-knocking (0:51) is a nice little, lovable detail. Great!

Dude, long time no see! Great to see you're alive :)

You might say something there. Yeah me too, I also really like Days Go By, I like different. The refrain going slower than the verse, taken example Metallica's The Unforgiven. Mmm. But of course The Future Is Now is a more classic The Offspring song, of course the majority's gonna favourite this one.

Days Go By never got me very excited for the new album. Maybe I'll like it more when we get the studio version, though, because I think my biggest gripe with it is that Dexter can't hit the notes live and is terribly flat - and since it's a slower/softer song, his voice is very exposed and every mistake it obvious. But the magic of the studio should take care of that :P Maybe I'll like it more when I can listen to it without cringing, haha.

But The Future Is Now has officially got me excited for this album. I've been listening to The Offspring for almost two weeks straight now, which is weird considering I rarely listen to them anymore. I feel like they're my favorite band again ;) And for the first time in YEARS, when I come to the BBS, I check GOD before GC... super weird. ;) The Future is Now has me just so damn excited!

That's good to hear ilovellamas. Somestimes I stay a while not listening to Offspring songs, but once I start again, I remember every single reason why I love them so much and why I have an Offspring tattoo on my arm.

I'd kinda like to discuss the meaning of The Future Is Now. As far as I can tell (so far), this song jumps around a lot of different meanings.

"This cityís made of diamonds
And tomorrow glass will grow
On the freedoms that divide us
Theyíre coming after me
Flashback 1984
Now whoís knock-knocking at your door?
A thought that starts a riot
Theyíre coming after me now"

Can't really decide what this first verse means....
City made of diamonds... maybe a reflection on how capital cities depend on money, and "glass will grow" meaning that this notion will end up hurting us and diving us even more.

I'm not sure what the Flashback 1984 reference means... 1984 was the year Offspring was formed.

"Life is not the same
I am one but
Sparks turn into flames"

What I got from this is that despite being only one person individually, you can still achieve great power, be that by yourself or eventually having others join you.

"Will you take whatís in my head?
And erase me when Iím dead?
Cause the future is now
And now Iím disappearing"

Now this I like. You are dying, and all you're worried about is if the information inside your mind, which you've accumulated threw out your life will be useful to the world once you're gone, while you and your name will be erased from history. The future, which we all saw coming and were afraid of, has finally arrived.

"And you get what you deserve
When revenge is what you serve
Cause the future is now
And now Iím disappearing"

This I also like very much. Very self explanatory. When all you think of is revenge, you don't end up well.

Everyother verse that I didn't mention here is either self explanatory or I simply don't quite understand what the message was. Any ideas? Also, "they're coming after me", I don't know exactly who "they" might be.

Damn I love overthinking songs :D

I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president...

I will be Fuhrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
Your kids will meditate in school!

[Chorus:]
California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California

Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face

Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
Mellow out or you will pay!

[Chorus]

Now it is 1984
Knock-knock at your front door
It's the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece

Come quietly to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don't you worry, it's only a shower
For your clothes here's a pretty flower.

DIE on organic poison gas
Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown
When you mess with President Brown

Truly amazing lyrics. It is a reference to the book 1984 and how it is coming true today. Or, at least that is how I see it. Here's why

"On the freedoms that divide us
Theyíre coming after me
Flashback 1984
Now whoís knock-knocking at your door?
A thought that starts a riot"

That is in reference to thoughtcrimes and the thoughtpolice.

"Will you take whatís in my head?
And erase me when Iím dead"

Again, what is in his head are thoughts. In the book, the main character is imprisoned and a part of his rehabilitation is to essentially erase his memory, so he falls in line with the ruling party. Winston's (the main character in the book) job before being captured is to rewrite the past, so the present is in line with the current party's ideology.

"Shouting progress is survival
Take one last look and see me
Now you see me, now you donít
No vow to break
No string of hope
My hero, your pariah"

A reference to the book by Emmanuel Goldstein, the leader of the Brotherhood, who is the opposition of the ruling party. His book has slogans such as War is Peace, Slavery is Freedom, etc.. His book is about raising the political awareness of the Proles (who make up 85% of the population) to overthrow the party. Winston is a prole, so Goldstein is his hero, the party's pariah.

As for the lyrics - I think it's about a person realizing his future - his own death, because future becomes from imagination to present to past every single moment(future is now), and mind thinks eternal, but body lasts only few moments.

I've already listened to the full video of this song so many times that it's gonna sound so weird to me when they release the studio version and there aren't a bunch of Japanese girls chanting on the off-beats during the chorus.
It looks like no problem for me. I stopped listening to Day Go By long time ago, so it's all forgotten, lol. Just checked it out by the way. So the option/solution is to stop listening to it at some point.

I'm more afraid about other things. For example, that some songs will sound better live than on CD. I think it happened to Half-truism in my opinion.

Then, I kinda hope they won't omit all of the heavy riffing from the beginning of Day Go By. It became kinda fancy and annoyingly high pitched. I loved the contrast there.

Ok guys, here you go:

This cityís made of diamonds
And tomorrow glass will grow
On the freedoms that divide us
Theyíre coming after me
Flashback 1984
Now whoís knock-knocking at your door?
A thought that starts a riot
Theyíre coming after me now

Life is not the same
I am one but
Sparks turn into flames

Will you take whatís in my head?
And erase me when Iím dead?
Cause the future is now
And now Iím disappearing

The day has turned to night
Can you save me from the light?
Cause the future is here
And this is how I disappear

Running down a spiral
With the light of better men
Shouting progress is survival
Take one last look and see me
Now you see me, now you donít
No vow to break
No string of hope
My hero, your pariah
Theyíre coming after me now

Life is just godís game
I am one but
Sparks turn into flames

And you get what you deserve
When revenge is what you serve
Cause the future is now
And now Iím disappearing

Iíll sink into the night
And Iím turning off the lights
Cause the future is here
And this is how I disappear

So the endís what you make it
And thatís what youíre looking for
This is the future
The future is now

Disappear
I disappear

Now turn off the lights
The skies are blue inside you
Turn off the lights
Theyíll get inside of you

I didn't see this coming. Thanks for the lyrics, a great song indeed!

Almost exactly my case too. The new song is fucking addictive, I keep humming the chorus over and over again. Great Dexter checks this thing out now after a while.

I'd argue that it's not better than Japan's flag, because while Japan's is simple, nobody questions whose flag it is when they see it. Most of the world could not differentiate the red/blue/white horizontal stripes. Doesn't matter if they're in a different order or have a shield... nobody recognizes Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Paraguay, Russia... they all pretty much look the same to the outside world :P Red White and Blue flags are just totally overdone. But Austria/Poland/Indonesia/Monaco aren't much better, considering their flags are all the same but with their blocks of red moved to a different side of empty white space on the flag.

does anyone know what this song is specifically about? im just curious
Only the band knows the specifics ;) we can only speculate.

I've hesitated to post my thoughts on the song because people here can be REALLY critical about any ideas... but if you feel like ripping on my thoughts, you can shove it ;) I think the song is about the Orwellian state of the current world, Silicon Valley, and learning everything you can about people for monetary gain.

This city’s made of diamonds
And tomorrow glass will grow
On the freedoms that divide us
They’re coming after me
To me, it seems Silicon Valley could be the "city" that's made of diamonds (money), and freedoms dividing us could be the freedoms internet companies have vs. freedoms people are supposed to have. "They're coming after me" just meaning that the "big brother" companies are coming after each of us.

Flashback 1984
Now who’s knock-knocking at your door?
A thought that starts a riot
They’re coming after me now
Reference to Orwell, I think. And Dead Kennedys.

Life is not the same
I am one but
Sparks turn into flames
Sparks = ideas, flames = destruction. Great ideas can lead to grand destruction.

Will you take what’s in my head?
And erase me when I’m dead?
Cause the future is now
And now I’m disappearing

The day has turned to night
Can you save me from the light?
Cause the future is here
And this is how I disappear
This reminded me from day one of the movie "Anti-Trust". Pretty horrible movie, but the premise involved stealing information/ideas/code from individuals and leaving them for dead, and then using that information to build their own overlording technology that connects us all. It made me think that maybe he's saying, "they" take what they can from us, get as much information as possible, and then don't really care what happens to us when we're dead because we're not actually important to them, we're only meant to be information sources.

It's just a theory, and it's probably wrong... but what I keep thinking about when I hear it.

I can't stop listening to this song. It keeps on playing in my head, it's amazing!

Truly amazing lyrics. It is a reference to the book 1984 and how it is coming true today. Or, at least that is how I see it. Here's why

"On the freedoms that divide us
They’re coming after me
Flashback 1984
Now who’s knock-knocking at your door?
A thought that starts a riot"

That is in reference to thoughtcrimes and the thoughtpolice.

"Will you take what’s in my head?
And erase me when I’m dead"

Again, what is in his head are thoughts. In the book, the main character is imprisoned and a part of his rehabilitation is to essentially erase his memory, so he falls in line with the ruling party. Winston's (the main character in the book) job before being captured is to rewrite the past, so the present is in line with the current party's ideology.

"Shouting progress is survival
Take one last look and see me
Now you see me, now you don’t
No vow to break
No string of hope
My hero, your pariah"

A reference to the book by Emmanuel Goldstein, the leader of the Brotherhood, who is the opposition of the ruling party. His book has slogans such as War is Peace, Slavery is Freedom, etc.. His book is about raising the political awareness of the Proles (who make up 85% of the population) to overthrow the party. Winston is a prole, so Goldstein is his hero, the party's pariah.

For me,this is the best interpretation of the lyrics...I'd say that just as You're gonna go far,kid has referred to 'Lord of the flies' by W.Golding,so does ''The Future is now'' refer to 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' by George Orwell...and Koopa's explanation of the verses is very logical...which doesn't have to mean though, that it's right...

I do believe this song is about losing freedoms as individuals. It talks of disappearing which I relate to Stalin's gulags and how people just 'disappeared' in Russia. Running down a spiral with the likes of better men can be seen as a censorship of progressive thought in America. The Orwellian references (1984, the future is now etc.) is a general warning that these things have occurred faster than we thought they would.

Basically, it's about how things have progressed not in the progressive term but have progressed in a regressive form when it comes to civil liberties so much so we are 'disappearing' as individuals and either have to put up or shut up to maintain an in group status so as to not be snuffed out.

Eh?

Sounds about right to me, although I don't think of it so politically (or historically).

I love the chorus "Will you take what's in my head, and erase me when I'm dead?"

We do that all the time. The world takes and uses the information that one individual had, and it moves on without that same individual once he/she dies.

I've always been uncertain about my thoughts on technological advancements. On one hand, I love how far we've come in science so we can know so much about the universe. We can also keep in touch with millions of people across the world. It's a huge convenience in life. On the other hand, technology means bigger weapons and the such. I mean, I'm fully supportive of the military and all, but I'd prefer it if we actually used more infantry soldiers instead of blowing them up from a kilometer away.

Has it made everyone safer?

Stronger if you use it for a good purpose and weaker if you abuse it.

Not only the Internet, cell phones for example, gps etc, but yes it was internet oriented. It "can" connect us all (don't take every word literally). Technology isn't good or bad. it's the use we make of it, a common statemant but true. like there are not stupid questions just stupid peolple.
without technology for example I couldn't have been at 5 offspring shows, without technology I couldn't make a shower with the power of the sun. Anyone could list so many positive things and so many bad things. A hammer could be used to kill a man. And as you suggested technology is such an wide range subject that we could discuss here for hours withoug getting a real point.

The whole KONY 2012 campaign happened after you wrote this song, but I feel like these are the kinds of events that you were referencing... protests organized online, sometimes without properly backed-up information and witch hunt-like character. On the other hand there is a myriad of opportunities to get good information over for example the internet that one just couldn't have gathered in the same time as today, which is a great advance. I guess everything has its pros and cons and lapses in peoples' minds will always be the cause of the failures associated with a particular kind of technology.

It's pretty obvious that Dexter is talking about modern technology, though, and a hammer is nothing close to modern technology. He's talking about the big brother-esque things going on, internet/iphone/gps related stuff.

Does technology bring us together? Or isolate us?

Well, We can spend hours alone in a dark basement with our marijuana and 4chan, but we could also be chatting with people from other countries/cultures: People we never would have met without the Internet. If it wasn't for the internet, I would think that Smash and Americana are the Offspring's only albums because they're the only ones my mother owns. In 2008 I acquired Internet access and in about 2009 I stumbled upon this site. It opened many musical doors for me. I've found a place where I belong (meh, sometimes. ya'll can be rude) A place where "different" is not only accepted, but expected. For me, The internet has brought me to my friends, though it isolates me from my family. Anyone here who knows my mother would agree that that is a good thing.

So I guess my answer is: Both.

Has it made you safer?

Does it make you stronger? Or weaker?

Does it empower us? Or enslave us?

How about, the mysterious of humanity...

Nope, it doesn't bring me together with my family because it only makes me more distance from them. Sure, it does isolate me in a very dark way.

Not at all, not the safetiest nor prepares me for the sake of my life, just makes me feel paranoid and I am aware of the dangers of Technology of a fucked society.

It makes me weaker to a point/a certain degree, but whatever. No it doesn't make me that much stronger, It ruins all of my relationships.

Sometimes it does and or other times it doesn't for me in general. Like if I were a robot programed by microchip shit.

How about, the dangers of technology...

Technology is a double edge sword that can be used for good or for bad, so basically it all comes down to free will.

Does technology bring us together? Or isolate us?
Whatever you want it to do. Technology created more ways for people to communicate with eachother, and made it a lot easier to talk to people in different countriess, for example my mom lives in Australia, and technology allows my mom and I to talk everyday.

Has it made you safer?
Security is illusion. Hellen Keller

Does it make you stronger? Or weaker?
neither, thats an individual human thing that has nothing to do with technology; with a few exceptions.

Does it empower us? Or enslave us?
either neither...free will. Kinda like the lemon scenario. If God gives you a sack of lemons, what do you do with them?

No, we dont always get what we want, but we get what we need. Free will = choices, what do you choose? Every moment in life, we are making choices. For example, when you wake up each day, you make choices on what you are going to do, what to where, your attitude, feelings, what to eat......

I guess whatever you want if its just you. But if another or more people are involved then their free will is equal to yours. Whether you agree or disagree.

I'm actually not a giant fan of lemonade. I'd probably just put them in the fridge and eat them for the next week/month (depending on how many lemons God gives me). Maybe he'd give me a few million and I could feed starving children :).

The only similarity with Savior is rhytm during the verses, and even this is just slightly similar. Not to mention that TFIN feels totally different. So no, those ripoff accusations were unjustified in this case, this is classic Offspring, I love it :)

What makes me laugh about the Savior comparison is that Rise Against totally ripped off the "whoa oh oh oh"s from AFI (Black Sails, I think, though I can't remember the name of the song right now). The circle of (songwriting) life is a snake eating its tail. It's all good, people.

Rise Against is my favorite band of all time (The Offspring is a close second). There's no comparison to Savior. At all. I'm sick of hearing that.
People are just hearing what they wanna hear because of suggestions.

Hey, Spawn is a rip-off of Spider-Man! Not really, but, if I said that, people would notice their almost-similar masks and claim that it's true. People only cry "rip-off" because some dick mentions if first and they think they hear/see something. Just no.

Haha, what Little Miss said about them being The Offspring and Bad Religion in a blender is so true.

That's not what I said, or at least, not entirely. Rise against used the exact same melody for those whoas as AFI did, in the same order, even in more or less the same tempo. They didn't just sing "whoas". And if just using whoas on a song could get you called out for ripping people off, everyone mentioned in this song would be totally fucked (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXkSNR5hH0s).

Spawn's not a rip-off of Spidey. He *is*, however, basically Ghost Rider, Venom, and Batman mashed together in a half-assed fashion.

And it makes sense to like Rise Against. They're not really my thing, but whatever. Just recognize that it's more along the lines of a variation of The Offspring's own sound than anything.

People accused James Cameron of copying fucking HALO, of all things, with Avatar. It's a similar thing, just coming full circle. 'Cause, like, not like half the Halo shit didn't come from Aliens anyway. If this track has a resemblance to Rise Against, it makes sense, since Offspring are pretty obviously a big influence on those dudes.

You missed my point entirely. He's not a rip-off. Because they have barely similar masks, if someone did publicly declare him a rip-off, some cunts would agree. He is not, though. I'm talking about the power of suggestion.

Eskimo

Off-topic admittedly, but seriously, Spawn's mask is the only similarity you see to other high profile comic characters?

Spawn is basically McFarlane running with the living-suit Venom concept from his run, put into a Ghost Rider mythology. Throw in some 90s-fad anti-heroics, Punisher style, and some Batman goth-ery, you've got the Image flagship. It's the most cynically "we'll make the most badass guy eveeeerrr, dudez!" hacked-together thing the industry's seen with a major character.

That's seriously different to an Offspring song sharing similarities with a band who...took influence from The Offspring.

GamerKT

Just forget Spawn. I'm saying that, if you claim something is a rip-off of something else because of a tiny thing (or nothing at all sometimes), there will always be people who join in like idiots with cries of "rip-off" for no good reason other than they think there's a ton of similarity because someone else said so. I hope I'm clear.

This probz belongs in Other Bands, but in the process of finding what song I'm thinking of, I just listened to most of Art of Drowning for the first time in several years. I can't believe it's 12 years old already. I bought it the day it came out and it was one of the most important albums to me in high school. Hey, remember when the "Days of the Phoenix" video came out and it was nothing but crotch shots of Davey? Memories! I listened to a good chunk of Sing the Sorrow, too...I hadn't listened to AFI or even the Offspring in a couple years because my boyfriend at the time was "punx as fuck" and took those bands' very existence as a personal affront. I didn't post here for a long time because he'd freak out. I never tried to foist them on him, but just that I liked them at all was apparently a problem. This probably should have been my first red flag that dude was crazy, but it wasn't of course. I remember getting STS in the mail when I was running my college's radio station and I started listening to it like mad in secret. Ended up revisiting my Offspring CDs too.

ďThe key to great rock and roll is to take the same three chords and make them sound new.Ē - Noodles

we have thousand of years of people making music, hundreds of years of people writing that shit down, a couple hundred guitar, a few decades of it being recorded and about 70 years of it being electric.

At this stage, EVERYTHING is derivative. There is no 'new' there is no 'rip off'. There is a finite amount of stuff one can do with any instrument and a tiny percentage of that finite stuff is even legible.

Any current rock band is drawing upon a plethora of influences and it will often be the case that one rock band is influenced by the same rock band that another rock band will be.

It is utter folly to say 'this bands song sounds like this other band'. OF COURSE IT DOES. as does that other band sound like a gazillion others before.

Hell, Dirty Magic totally rips off Fleetwood Mac if you believe some people (http://www.youtubhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcawnRIyeoke.com/watch?v=pcawnRIyeok from 3:10 ish onwards)

This might have already been mentioned but I hate the term "ripped off" now because every time a song sounds like another, the band must have "ripped them off." I truly believe that The Offspring has NEVER ripped anyone off. They have written songs that ended up sounding a little bit like another song but it's not like they did it on purpose. As if they were like, "Hey this album is taking too long. Grab some Greenday albums, Noodles. We're gonna rip them the fuck off." I write songs all the time and most of them I end up throwing in the garbage because it sounds too much like something else. With time going by it just gets harder and harder to make something 100% fresh.

(The following post is made by an educated music theory nerd, so please spare me the 'you have the tiniest knowledge of music' spiel).

Yes, you're right. There are only so many notes, and only so many configurations of them. Apologists love to make this point, as if it's some novel concept that everyone else is oblivious to. Yes, of course, new music builds upon concepts that have been part of the melodic canon forever. It's a time-honored tradition that has been around forever. The criticism that is leveled against the Offspring is not the usual "oh, these three notes are the same three notes as in another song", but that they go out of their way to emulate hits from other artists to achieve success in the charts, whether by directly copying specific musical elements (such as the painfully transparent "Rise and Fall"/"American Idiot" rip) or by following a template ("YGGFK" was obviously fashioned so as to appeal to the Fall Out Boy / PaTD fan contingent).

Something that a lot of Offspring fans seem to overlook (or are being willfully ignorant of) is the fact that these accusations have been with the band for a long time. You don't really hear it about other bands that often, at least not to this extent. Back in the Ixnay days, there was outraged about how much "All I Want" sounded like Bad Religion (yes, I know the "Protocol" story, save it), how much "Me & My Old Lady" sounded like Jane's Addiction, etc. The following year, "Why Don't You Get a Job" shamelessly replicated the melody to The Beatles "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" (I'm honestly surprised no legal action was taken); years later, "Want You Bad" blatantly ripped off The Descendant's "Coolidge", "Defy You" outright stole from Staind's "Outside" (the bridge melody) while copying the nu-metal format that was popular at the time. RAFRAG is filled with these lifts. You've heard them all, so I won't bore you with them.

I'm not saying all the comparisons are actual cases of plagiarism. Sometimes people just find associations that aren't even there. But fans do need to wake up to the fact that this just isn't the most creative band around. When so many people make the same observation about the band, at some point you have to open your eyes and think about whether you're the one who's being myopic.

I'm well aware that the offspring sound like a bunch of other bands. I'm well aware that a bunch of other bands sound like the offspring. my point is basically that I don't care. The Offspring do it a lot better than the bands they may or may not have borrowed from, hence I like them more.

All I Want sounds like Bad Religion? Wtf, I listen to that band all the time. Point me in the direction of a specific song so I can compare, because all I hear is a fast and typically Offspring song.

I wasn't aware of some of those accusations. Might give those songs a spin. I knew YGGFK is taking the dance pop punk genre and giving it some testicles, and about WDYGAJ though.

What surprises me is in the current climate where companies buy patents just so they can sue people, that no one has put these guys in court yet if every song claimed to be a rip off is true.

Yep, which was all very sweet. But if you actually read my post, I was actually addressing some other dude saying MCR ripped off the offsping but if you wanna mis-interpret, go ahead.

I'm well aware that the offspring sound like a bunch of other bands. I'm well aware that a bunch of other bands sound like the offspring. my point is basically that I don't care. The Offspring do it a lot better than the bands they may or may not have borrowed from, hence I like them more.

Good deal. I misread you, and I apologize for getting pedantic. This has all been brewing in my head after hearing "Days Go By".

Days Go By is very derivative, but of The Cult.

That's the only thing that annoys me about the accusations flying around youtube. Foo Fighters hardcore fans thinking it's a rip off of Times Like These. Hardly. I listen to that song a lot as well.

It's not just Foo Fighters hardcore fans. Most everyone who listens to that song points out the similarity to "Times Like These". Yes, the riff sounds a lot like The Cult, but the vocal melody and overall musical structure is very clearly modeled after "Times Like These". Especially when you listen to the early version of the song, before they re-did the vocal melody.

I don't want to be responsible for turning this thread into a repeat of the "Days Go By" thread, but it seems a very obvious parallel to make, and really hard to defend as a simple accident, especially considering the guitar arrangements.

I'll never be able to entirely see where these people are coming from, because I first heard "You Will Find a Way," which was, unquestionably, a lot like Times Like These. So for me, when I heard "Days Go By," it sounded like a good-enough disguise even if I thought the song was a little bland. I have no idea what my reaction would have been had I never heard "You Will Find a Way."

Brett criticized "All I Want" as a Bad Religion rip-off when it came out, and I remember a bunch of people joined in the criticism. I defended them at the time, because it sounded like Brett was still sore about them leaving Epitaph... plus, all of that 90s "skate-punk" (I hate that term, but it encompasses the specific style that I'm referring to) seemed to share a common musical vernacular, melodically and structurally.

But then this story (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4Df48ytpHM) came to light, and the accusations seemed to make a little more sense.
