What song(s) did you listen to the most this past year? List either the top song or perhaps the top 3, but no more than that.

What albums did you listen to most this past year? Same deal as with top song.

Song- Island of Shame by Lagwagon- I began to love this song and video pretty quickly. Learning it on guitar and drums kept me interested for a while. It's cool listening to an awesome song that you can play and think "Wow, I can do everything that's happening in this song right now". I've just recently gotten to the point where I've played it out a bit too much, but it's still the top song this past year.

Album- Resolve by Lagwagon- I think that this is the most unrated album in the history of punk rock. I don't think there is a more sincere expression of emotion in punk rock than there is on this album, and I think the songwriting is great. I couldn't find anything special about just a few of the songs, but eventually I found moments in even in those few songs that I love.

I listen to way more music on my mp3 player and on CD than I do on my computer, so this isn't gonna be accurate at all...

Top three songs: Well, I had a two-way tie for first place, and a three-way tie for second, so you're getting top 5. All the same artist.

1) Vanessa Carlton Carousel 14
1) Vanessa Carlton Fairweather Friend 14
3) Vanessa Carlton London 13
3) Vanessa Carlton I Don't Want To Be A Bride 13
3) Vanessa Carlton Hear The Bells 13

Let's see what my top album was... I bet it'll be a total surprise... Let's go with top three, because jesus I don't really love Vanessa Carlton that much.

1) Vanessa Carlton Rabbits On The Run 122
2) Lisa Hannigan Passenger 77
3) Cake Showroom of Compassion 75

I've branched out a lot into different genres of rock, but whenever I'm driving, I have a strong tendency towards punk rock. And that's when I listen to the most music by far.

Oh man, I've totally got last.fm covering this one for me:

Song:
Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash: This is the sort of song that you hear at 4 in the morning, late at night in October and you realize all at once that you're not really the person that you think that you are, and maybe you were kind of a dick to someone once and it totally tears you apart and you stay up all night thinking about the times that you weren't representative of the person you wish you were. According to last.fm, it's my top played track over the past 12 months: I've listened to it 25 times since last February.

Album... I'll need to get back to you on this.

So far, according to Last.fm

1. Bad Religion Dearly Beloved
2. Bad Religion Before You Die
3. Bad Religion New Dark Ages
4. Bad Religion Lost Pilgrim
5. Bad Religion Only Rain
6. Bad Religion Fields of Mars
7. Bad Religion Suffer
7. Bad Religion Sorrow (acoustic)
9. The Offspring No Brakes
10. Pennywise Alien
10. Pennywise Something Wrong With Me
10. The Offspring Mota
10. Pennywise Set Me Free
10. The Offspring Cool To Hate
10. Bad Religion Marked

I have been listening a lot on New Maps of Hell. That is really a great record. Hopefully, I will get The Offspring up to first place again, during this year. We will probably get an album later this year, which might help.

Hoo man. Where to start. No more than 3? Fuck that.

Yeasayer- Phoenix Wind (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTmCywl8M7I)
Yeasayer is my absolute favorite band around today, because I'm just an indie-hippie fag like that. They released only 2 songs this year, but this one is one of my favorites. It's super hippie-ish but it's incredibly chill and puts me in a good mood. Reminds me of a summer night.

The Naked and Famous- Frayed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BiW58KC4qc)
I should have posted this in the outros thread. I liked this better than any of their singles.

311- Weightless (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seS-3Ybnzqk)
Rant: I hate the word "relevant." What the fuck does it mean? When people bitch about a band not being "relevant," what aren't they relevant to? Modern culture, I guess? So in other words, relevant is just a more credible-sounding way of saying "hip" or "trendy," which are two things that have long been dismissed as things that only douchebags care about? OK, cool, just checking. 311's new album got trashed by just about everyone because they're not "relevant" in 2011, but I quite enjoyed it, especially this song.

Hyro Da Hero- The World's Stage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZglsiP8hkJw)
I could have picked a number of songs by this guy. He's a rapper with a full backing rock band that includes Cody Votolato and Mark Gajadhar, formerly of the Blood Brothers. You can really hear Votolato's distinctive guitar sound in this song.

Astronautalis- Measure the Globe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PUWANkSHDc)
I think I first heard about this guy from cokeaholic? Anyway, I really like him. He's a rapper as well, but not all of his songs have rap in them. This is one such song and it's probably my current favorite.

Hoo man. Where to start. No more than 3? Fuck that.
I guess it's not so bad if you list around 5 or so, but I don't want it to devolve into "here's a ton of songs I think are great" or "I'm just gonna post my last.fm stats". That kind of ruins the slight originality this thread has. I think it's interesting to here what songs people find to be so good and deep that you keep finding new things to love about it that keep you interested.

Oh yeah, I always hated the word "relevant" to describe new music as well. I remember being frustrated the first few times I ever saw it because it confused me. Now I understand it's meaning, but I don't really care for it. I don't get what it has to do with quality.

I agree with the principle of the thread. I'll edit out two of mine, since no one's gonna check out 7 songs anyway. But I like the idea of posting Youtube links in any kind of "list good songs" thread. I hope other people start doing that!

I find it amusing that this band has cited this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9semULFpEbU) as the source of their band name in interviews, but Tricky was actually quoting this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHPkLuVBQ1Y) with those lyrics.

@llamas: Kept on listening to Carousel by Vanessa Carlton and I began to appreciate it more and more as I listened. The video really fit the music well, especially the bridge. Not something I'd probably get into though, but maybe I'll have the urge to hear it again.

@jackknife: C'mon man. Thanks for the input, but like I said, posts like that strip this thread of the slight originality it has.

Ah, i think i missed the line that said "top three": just pretend the other 7 songs don't exist then.

If you're interested... Carousel is actually probably my least favorite song on the album (though it's still good). I really like Hear the Bells (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRegulrUfx8), Dear California (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfjUmTzL1N8&feature=related), The Marching Line (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9EsrgKxBew&feature=related), and I Don't Want to be a Bride (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VB3-Khriuk&feature=related). It's definitely a very solid album, if you're into kinda the indie-pop-chick style.

Awesome! I'm glad you dig that Astronautalis album, it's probably my favorite record from last year. After I saw him live, I bought it from him and got it signed. Maybe one of the best live shows I've been to in a long, long time.

Here's a video from that show, I'm sort of visible for the whole thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHN68EX3WFk

Awesome, I thought it was you who mentioned him on here. Around the same time I noticed that he had one of the best-rated albums on metacritic, so I figured what the hell, I'll check him out. I think I only listened to the album once on Spotify before I bought it.

That looks like it was a pretty sweet show. He's practically the only person I'd be vaguely interested to see at SXSW this year (wasn't there a thread on here about how the SXSW lineup sucks this year? It really does).

New category: Most overrated songs of the year (which I was forced to listen to most):

Drake - Marvin's Room
Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks

According to iTunes, mine is Linoleum by NOFX. I would have thought Black Masks and Gasoline (Rise Against).

EDIT: Just synced my iPod. Top three are:
1. LAPD - Offspring
2. Cowboys From Hell - Pantera
3. Tied - Them Bones (Alice In Chains) & Mota

It's kind of hard for me to know as my vinyl player doesn't count how many times I've played a record, but it is probably something like this:

Albums:
Matt & Kim - Sidewalks
Against Me! - Crime as Forgiven By
Against Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose

Songs:
DJ AnounymOS - So i herd u liek musics (oh lawd, is dat sum insurgency) version 2.1
Some AM! song
Some another AM! song, maybe Rice and Bread

2011 was really dominated by Against Me! for me.

Shit, I forgot about Bad Astronaut. I listened to them a lot because I just got into them this year.

Grey Suits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-2D2ePvkJ8&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PLE4BA4B26E417BBF8
This one doesn't really differ from Lagwagon as much as a lot of their other songs do, but it's still great.
Unlucky Stuntman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oplRpEwhN0
Perhaps the perfect representation of Bad Astronaut's music in general.
Solar Sister (The Posies cover): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9p475EqDU0
OMFG I am in love with the harmony in this song. The first three times I heard it, it just seemed a little odd, but I quickly realized how perfect it is. I'll never get over this song, it's epic.

Someone check it out and tell me!
