They're an amazing band. Just felt like saying that. My sister bought me a vinyl of From The Ashes and I think it's my favorite album by them now. I used to like NOFX better, but I like Pennywise better now. It's cool they've been independent for so long.

What do you guys think?

I think if you actually give their newer stuff a chance, it's not as stale as it first seems to a lot of people. But, the newer stuff is still lacking enough musical change to really get too excited about it. They really haven't evolved or done anything groundbreaking, but in the newer stuff it seems they messed around a bit with some of the stuff that newer punk rock bands were doing and successfully worked that into their sound.

I'm not sure how I feel about PW with the new singer.

They were never a favorite band of mine, but i did enjoy their music. I thought their last record with Jim was pretty fun: one of their better efforts in recent years.

I'm a fan of Black Pacific too; their record last year was a lot of fun. I'm more excited about them, than Pennywise at the moment.

I'm also pretty sure i managed to see one of Jim's last shows with the band, when i saw them open for the Offspring in the summer of 09.

From The Ashes is my favorite from them too. What is strange, I never managed to find a decent good-bitrate and quality rip of this one on the net until now. Land Of The Free is close second, maybe because it was the first one I heard from them.

I used to call NOFX my second favourite band. But then I started listening more to Pennywise and Bad Religion.

It is hard to name a bad Pennywise song, if you exclude the earliest stuff (A Word from the Wise/Wildcard has some bad songs, for example.)

Their new album is out in May. The song All or Nothing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSibIsG5FdA) is good. Not great. Does not sound as much as Pennywise without Jim. But I can get used to it.

Well i don't really think it's fair to Jim that they are badmouthing him that way. If your heart isn't in it anymore, what can you do?

Pennywise were always sounding more or less the same, hopefully things could change now that there's some freshness in the band. I've always liked them, but it's not hard to get bored with their albums, not enough diversity, which hurts the good songs as they don't stand out from the rest. That said they do have some really good songs, and the new song is one of them. I like it :)

Fletcher explained in the interview that they would have been fine with it if he had just told the truth, but he was essentially dishonest in explaining his reasons for leaving.

Rooster
03-07-2012, 03:03 PM
Yeah, but I think the fault might be on both sides. Maybe Jim just didn't feel comfortable discussing that with them, perhaps he didn't want another argument, but he should have told them the real reason, yes. That would be fair.

I think it's pointless discussing this matter onward, since neither of us really know the situation, that knowledge is reserved to the band members. Only they know what really happened.

Now, I think I'll check out the new album when it comes out. The song sounds promising.

I like a few Pennywise albums, but I saw them live a few years ago and was utterly disappointed. They couldn't keep a steady tempo and weren't together at all, the songs blurred together to a point where I could hardly tell them apart, and Jim CONSTANTLY was yelling shit about the police, and then apologizing to the actual cops whenever they came near the stage. One of the most forgettable shows I've ever seen.

I do own two of their albums (Full Circle and Straight Ahead), and I have 8 more albums in mp3 form. Straight Ahead is probably the best album they've made, and the only one I ever really listen to. However, this will never stop being an absolutely fantastic song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbTGGApqxjs)

Just noticed this, and I agree SO much. Their biggest weakness in my eyes is that all their songs sound the same (which was severely exemplified when I saw them live). There's so little diversity, even from album to album, that I get bored with them really fast. That might be why I only ever listen to one or two albums from them; it's enough of the same. That one type of song they write, though, they do a good job of. It just gets old after a while.

I think he thought he was funny or something? I'm not sure. He'd yell "fuck the police!" or whatever, and then whenever the police came close, he'd say "just kidding, officers" or something. Every single time, over and over. If it was supposed to be funny, it wasn't.

In other news, I like the new single. It doesn't sound the same as their other songs - that's probably part of why ;)

Lyrics (finally found them online) ... :)

Let us hear your voice

There's a rebellion on ice and you'll pay the price
As your freedom fades away.
Dishonesty is high, so won't you even try
To stand up for your rights and say.

We don't want your laws. So take 'em back right now.
They're bullshit anyhow.
It's time we had our say. The injustice cannot stay.
They stabbed us in the back.
And you can feel it bleeding if your heart's beating now.

So let us hear your voice. They said we have a choice.
But I don't believe they really meant it so.
We're gonna call their bluff 'cause we have had enough.
Take the power back. The foundation's gonna crack.

I see the freedom at the end of the road.
I've heard so many lies and I've taken the blows.
Give it to me. Take it from me. Nobody knows.
Sick of being used and I'm gonna explode.
Total destruction all over the place.
There is so much hate it's a fuckin' disgrace.
Everyone is blind; can't see through the lies.
But they aren't even looking at the wolves in disguise.

So will you hear the call or let the judgements fall.
This is it so wake up let's go
And track the liars down and then remove their crowns
And lash 'em with the binds they hold.

Everyone is blind; can't see through the lies.
But they aren't even looking at the wolves in disguise.

And you can feel it bleeding if your heart's beating now.

Rebellion's on ice but we'll pay the price.
Don't let our freedoms fade away.

Well, the album still suffers from the "Pennywise syndrome" - the pace hardly changes during the course of the album, so there's a bit less diversity than I'd like.

BUT (and there's a big BUT) what saves it is the quality of the songs. It's nothing new or groundbraking, it's just an album full of songs in the style that Pennywise does best. It's packing with energy, plus the songs manage to be very catchy at the same time. And some of the songs are simply excellent. I can't get "Revolution" out of my head, that track is probably my favorite from this so far.

So the album is by no means a disappointment, It may even become my favorite release from them. Zoli was the right pick for the singer. The only downside is the lack of diversity (which becomes evident when you compare them with The Offspring for example), but other than this I can't find any faults. Well done Pennywise, well done :)

I guess it's hard to stay the same - same as it's hard to do something that sounds entirely 'new' and 'innovative' and all that at the same time. Personally I think this album is a great melange of the both ... not trying too hard but still sounding a little different.

Only a tiny little sidenote/a little something I don't like that much: The intros of 'Songs of Sorrow' and 'We have it all' ... other than that well done indeed. :)

Really hope they're gonna perform some of these songs in July ;)

I listened to it yesterday and very much enjoyed it. Zoli fits right in with the rest of the band and it still feels like Pennywise even without Jim. Wow, I'm amazed at how much it sounds just like Pennywise. So many bands change completely with a new singer, but Pennywise sounds the same. I like Zoli's voice more than Jim's, though. I like this album. It's a solid punk album. Nothing more, nothing less. Since I don't really listen to punk much anymore, this album probably won't get too much play for me, but probably more than the last few albums have. I loved Full Circle and Straight Ahead, and then I started to get kinda bored with Pennywise. The new singer brings some life and freshness that could keep me interested for a while.

Waste another day, songs of sorrow, tomorrow and locked in, are the bad songs for me.

So, I've listened to the album a few times, and as is typical for Pennywise, I think some of the songs are great, but I can't really listen to an album all the way through due to monotony. There's no rise and fall to the album, no flow - it's just all the same level all the time. That's always been what's kept me from really getting into Pennywise.

Let Us Hear Your Voice is probably my favorite track, though. Very catchy.

My favorite artists tend to have many genres and styles in the same album, where all the songs sound so different that you might even think they're almost different artists. I love diversity. That's just me. :)

yeah it happened to me with the last offspring album, the diversity you guys like, killed it. Fix you, kristy, a lot like me, I didn't like those songs, and sadly got me bored. It's had some good songs and bad songs like all the albums in general..

Thank god Pennywise has no diversity

It certainly sounds like Pennywise.... Like others have mentioned it gets pretty boring/repetitive after a while. Some of the songs are way to damn long, there's no reason why any of them should have been over 3min in length. If they trimmed down their songs a bit and cut out a couple for a total album runtime of about 25-30min it would have been much stronger.

I'm actually somewhat disappointed with it, since I felt their last album was the most interesting thing they've done in years.

Yep! lol

I heard the new record, just to hear the new guy's voice. He sings OK, but the guitar tone is just awful. Pennywise is a good band, but they are really repetitive. They keep making the same record. I used to have 6 or so records from them...but it just got too boring. They need to evolve - not necessarily easy to do and still maintain your roots...but it's just more of the same everytime!

Dunno, understandable I think ... the whole thing could have been handled differently from Jim's part (without having been there and actually having only listened to a couple of interviews that is). But one should think that if you're in a band together (and kind of friends maybe) and have been for decades that there would be enough honesty and trust to put things on the table just the way they are ...

Not gonna happen I guess ;). They probably could (like any other band) but why would they? It's their style and their way and as long as they're enjoying it (thankfully more and more again obviously) it's all good.

I looked him up a bit because I thought he seemed dickish in that excerpt... dude sounds like a total asshole. Jim wanted to spend time with his family, and Fletcher is bitching. Sorry, Jim was the lead singer, wrote the lyrics, etc... and the guitarwork on Pennywise albums is nothing special; it's the lyrics and singing that make it what it is. Sounds like Jim wanted out for very good reasons, and he's probably better off not working with a dick like Fletcher.

It simply does not sound like Pennywise. Zoli and Jim have very different voices, and do not agree that Zoli sounds like a younger Jim. I have no problem with Zoli when they sing the new songs. But does not sound quite right when they sing the previous Pennywise songs live.

Yeah, I can imagine that being really weird and it's a great point. A change in singer doesn't change the band as a whole, but voice is the most personal and easily identifiable instrument out there. A change in bassist or drummer can sometimes be hardly noticeable; a change in guitarist is usually noticeable, but doesn't change the band's overall sound; a change in vocalist, though, can really change everything. I agree that they're still the same band with the same general attitude and what they stand for... same rocking sound, etc... but man, can you imagine the Offspring without Dexter?? Oh man.

I think Dexter's too much of the bone marrow of the band. And they are rather old now too so, at this point, I do not think it would be an good idea to continue.

I think that the band will be over if (or when) either one of Greg, Dexter and Noodles quits.

Well, this doesn't sound so good :( ...

Due to a setback in what appeared to be the road to recovery for Zoli Teglas, Pennywise will have to postpone their upcoming appearances in Japan and Australia. After being examined by multiple specialists Zoli has been advised to commence further treatments immediately.

“We love playing in front of our fans all over the world,” says guitarist Fletcher Dragge. “The doctor’s news was a hard blow for everyone but Zoli’s health is our number one priority. We are working with the best doctors around to make sure Zoli gets back on his feet as soon as possible…our apologies go out to all our dedicated fans…we will be making up these shows as soon as possible…keep the beers cold!”

We apologize to our fans and look forward to making it up the shows at a later date.

As many of our fans, family, and friends know, our good friend and singer, Zoli Teglas suffered a serious back injury during a performance in Europe this past summer. A recent setback in his road to a full recovery and the additional treatment needed has made it necessary for us to cancel all touring activity for October 2012. We must allow more time for Zoli to heal.

We will be back out there as soon as possible and thank all of our fans for their support, patience and good wishes to Zoli for a speedy return to full health.

I think that Jim can pull the newer songs off. I do not know exactly how much his voice has changed during these years, but he has been playing with The Black Pacific.

It is likely that quite some people will be trying to record this, and some are bound to turn out descent.

Yeah true that, I hope we get good stuff out of these shows, I also hope they are going to webcast the show in L.A they will do for the 25 years of the band.

I dunno if now that they have Jim back, is a good choice to remake the CD, right? Man this is too much, am over-thinking everything...

P.S. I really hope this is gonna last (yeah, call me sceptic) though I'm gonna miss Zoli (there, I said it ;)) and this breath of fresh air ... but a return now does make sense since you can't have this 25 year anniversary with a singer that hasn't been with the band for long so ... it's understandable and reasonable ;)

Man, this sounds kinda like a nail in the coffin for Pennywise. To lose a lead singer in the way they did, replace him, put out an album with the new guy, and have the new guy then leave... there are clearly some deep-seated issues in this band, and I doubt they'll last much longer.

Wow, I'm surprised he put him on blast like that.

Anyway, this means two things for me 1) The chance, but definitely not guarantee, that Pennywise will release an inspired record with the reunited lineup. 2) A chance to see Pennywise live with Jim again. If you can't enjoy a Pennywise mosh pit, you suck.

Well, obviously Zoli & Pennywise just wasn't meant to be due to whatever reasons. But like I've already said I'm still sceptic - nonetheless the Reunion Show sold out in less than 10 minutes according to this http://www.facebook.com/pennywise/posts/10151307665201823 so all these going after Zoli and the decision to have him replace Jim in the first place should be happy (for) now. After the interview on kroq with Fletcher and Jim (which was actually pretty frank considering the fact that it is guys talking about feelings and stuff AFAIC :p) I'd like to hear Zoli's take on things too.
Be it as it may 'All or Nothing' is one of the best albums they've released ...

And look who I met ! :D

He said they are gonna come back to Argentina, like they did this year, and I said to him that the show was amazing, that the new album was great all that crap we fans always say, that I was glad that he and Jim are back together, then I asked for Jim and he said "well he might be out drinkin' with the guys", and he left to talk to some other fans.

Then I kept wondering why was he at a Drugstore and not drinkin' with Jim and the Band, but at that point I didn't care cause he was the only Pennywise band member we got to see, then we also met the guys from Rise Against, Alkaline Trio and Anti-Flag. Definitely Two Awesome Nights !

What I'm wondering most as some of you already mentioned is whether they will at any point play a song from All Or Nothing with Jim. It would be interesting to see them live, Zoli has got a bit of a higher vocal range than Jim, but then again, they could just lower the key so he can pull it off. Anyway, still pretty curious how would the songs tur out with Jim on vocals.

From what I see online 'All or Nothing' was / is a highly praised album (as is 'Full Circle') but since it isn't 'his' album and these are not 'his' lyrics (and probably not 'his' style) he ain't gonna do it. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't he say something like
a) he didn't listen to the whole album and
b) it's - more or less - back to core Pennywise songs
Another reason might be his vocal range too - as has already been mentioned

All in all kind of understandable I guess not to perform songs of 'All or Nothing' (but still it sucks :p)

Pennywise : All Or Nothing

When Pennywise parted ways with original frontman Jim Lindberg many people thought that should have been the end of the road for Pennywise. That assumption could not have been more wrong. “All Or Nothing” is the best album of the bands career. There we said it and that’s that. The energy, vigour and drive that Pennywise showed on “All Or Nothing” was astounding and every track on the album was strong. The vocal delivery from Zoli was 100% on point and Fletcher and crew ripped through some of the most aggressive tracks the band has ever written. The album was incredible.
