ahhh wtf! My mighty offspring guitar pick I got at the alex's bar ignition gig is already getting smudged up. This is my first time using it too :(

I can only play offspring songs with this pick, I must save it! haha

Nice take on the song! There are tons fast Offspring songs that could be turned into acoustic ballads, haha. Da Hui would be quite a challenge.

That would be me, some years ago, with almost no recording equipment. Now that I look back on this stuff, I would have arranged and made it a lot better :D

I haven't done tabs in so long, I might have forgotten how to. I think the song was mostly chord stuff though. I remember the shapes of E minor to D, A, etc.

Fuck it, doing one more tonight. Out on Patrol!!

I was thinking about doing have you ever, session, and demons. Those other songs.. hmm

Fix you - This song already seems perfect for acoustic. No challenge! Maybe if we did a fast punk rock version haha

Crossroads - Who thinks this would be the hardest offspring song to pull of on the acoustic?

OC Life - This would be doing a cover of a cover :P

The Future Is Now - If I have a harmonica that fits the right key, I could play the little lead part with rhythm guitar haha

The crisis is affecting the Offspring, too - they can't afford paint for their picks, so they've been using magic marker ;)

Dan M is so right - this band has awesome melodies, and I never really realized that before. I think that's one of the things that keeps me coming back to this band.

Also, I actually think I prefer hearing acoustic covers like this of Offspring songs, as opposed to hearing the band do acoustic covers. They're just not a band that sounds too great acoustic. I mostly think Dexter's voice doesn't really work for that.

I can relate to beheaded in my relationship.. well past now I guess. Anyways, cool! glad you liked it. If I record an offspring tribute album, Million Miles Away will definitely be on it. It's so much fun to play on acoustic. My one problem is the chorus though. I don't like doing the cheeriwhoas there.

I think the problem is that Offspring tries to make their acoustic versions too similar to the originals. I mean, it's probably smart to not fuck up these songs as much as I do to where some are unidentifiable.. but if they tweaked some stuff like playing in better keys for the vocals, maybe they could get it right ;)

Yeah, and in acoustic they come across amazingly, especially songs you wouldn't expect, like All I Want ("Back off your rules...") and even Gone Away, I think, sounds even better acoustic.

I have to disagree, I think the acoustic version of Dirty Magic is soo much better sounding than the original, and they (just like Manic Subsidal, only in a less virtuoso way) manage to find the essence of their songs and transfer it perfectly

Hey Man Where's Everybody
06-16-2012, 04:27 PM
Count me among those who think The Offspring aren't particularly great at playing their own songs in an acoustic setting. As ilovellamas said, Dexter's voice is just not well suited for it, plus their playing style simply does not befit the quieter arrangements. They're not particularly clean players, often flubbing notes and botching chords in a way that would get lost in the loud cacophony of a punk rock show, but really stands out in a quieter acoustic setting. Lastly, I think they're just not great at coming up with acoustic arrangements that really showcase the melodies, usually sucking a song dry of all its agency. Witness this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GwqxyaJKRY) acoustic version of TKAA, which trudges and plods along laboriously. The big thing that Manic Subsidal is doing with this thread that the band themselves seem incapable of doing is coming up with strong, creative guitar arrangements that highlight the melodic strengths of the songs, and cover more of the harmonic spectrum than simply what the guitars are playing in the studio version.

Tabs? :D

Seriously though, sick guitar playing. Your voice fits those arrangements perfectly. My personal favorites so far are Million Miles Away and Out on Patrol. Really cool strumming patterns.

What was the one you used at the beginning of Patrol? Seems a bit different from the original, which I believe goes like D-DU-UDU per measure and is just repeated over and over.

hahaha I have NO idea. I'm not really aware of what I'm doing anymore while playing. I used to know some theory, chord names, strumming patterns, etc. because I would teach music too.. but now I don't concentrate on anything lmao.

I did the 2010 version. The BEST one in my opinion. Really sucks that the whole foo fighters controversy made the band change the song. Then even worse, Bob Rock mixed the song where you can't freaking hear my favorite part (After the I know's)

Bravo, bravo *clap hands*. That was a fine cover (and of course all the others, great talent, especially in finding the meaning, feeling and transfering songs, to make it your own). Playing guitar myself, I see some sweet guitar pickings and techniques too. Again, bravo! I liked this early version way better than the new Days Go By, too. Great chorus.

Well said. I agree with everything here. That TKAA acoustic version is just painful... I couldn't listen to more than a minute of it. Dexter's voice is screeching and uncomfortable over very unclean, uncreative guitar work. This band DEFINITELY does their best as a loud, electric group. That's just how they are. Manic Subsidal has done exactly what you described: come up with creative guitar arrangements (whereas the Offspring tends to stick with the same power chords they use in the electric versions) that bring out the wonderful melodies.

So the brown shirt sessions are almost over and I'm thinking about doing another round of recording this week. Now is the time to request any songs you want to be manic subsidized.

Since everyone seems to dig this, I'll continue recording little bits. Once I have a decent collection, I'll post a new thread with a poll of all of these songs so you guys can select which ones you like the most. After that, I'll record a real tribute album.

I'll post Change The World tonight :)

Great job, I watched them all. Some of them are really amazing.

You think you could do something with Pass Me By?

Haha ok yeah I'll do that one for fun. I have secret unreleased lyrics for that song too

Yeah, I'll probably do 12 full songs with good quality. If enough people want it, I'll include tabs and all that junk too :)

I didn't want to sing the dance fucker part cause my neighbors right behind that wall are probably still sleeping :P

I'm done with this thread for a while. I'll get back to it maybe once the new album hype is over. But yeah, if you still have any requests, leave him here or pm me. I'll start recording the tribute album in december. Cyaaaa
