Based on what? Ahead of them were Linkin Park, Maroon 5, R. Kelly, an all-star hip hop compilation, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen...the biggest of the big deals. That's a lot of traffic. I think this is a respectable debut in this market.

Well, RAFRAG debut at what, #9? So #12 seems reasonable.

Number of units is definitely less, but even then that's probably more of a symptom of wider trends in the music industry since 2008, than a reflection on the band itself.

I think it's also a symptom of how many huge albums were ahead of them this week.

It's almost exactly half the amount RaF,RaG sold the first week. The #12 isn't really so low, but an album earlier this year reached #1 with 30-something thousand. I realize it's summer and there are a lot of more high-profile artists releasing their albums, but I thought for sure they could have a top five debut.

Again, nobody really expected this album to sell a lot, including me. If you're selling a record, it's almost surely not a rock record. But that's not going to stop me from being disappointed when my favorite band doesn't catch on like I hoped they would in my reasonable expectations.

There's no way they could have had a top five debut with those records that are ahead of them in the chart. It would have been nice, I'm sure, and I'm sure the band appreciates your faith in them, but there is no stopping Biebz or Carly Rae Jepsen or apparently Linkin Park.

Regarding it being half of RAFRAG's first week, there is a TON that could have to do with this. Was Hammerhead getting played on the radio more than Days Go By? For how many weeks? Were there any problems with the album being hard to find in stores? How much has the market shrunk since RAFRAG came out?

You can't compare sales numbers of an album that came out three years ago to an album that came out last week. Too much changes year to year and even month to month in the music industry.

She's a relatively new artist - or at least her fame is in the US is newfound. I think she had another record that did well in Canada. Her single is at #1 on the pop charts right now, and it's pretty good

Probabily now days the success of an album can't be valued looking at sales, but there are other factors like charts and singles, and days go by in my opinion is doing quite well almost everywhere.

I don't know if there is a updated chart from Japan but I hope "Days Go By" album will debut very well, because as I can see Cruising California is a Hit there; RAFRAG debuted #1 there and also there was an Offspring Party called "Cruising Tokyo" when the album came out. So I think Japan is the country that loves the most "The Offspring" and "Days Go By" will debut #1!

whether the album is really successful or not is if it can stay on the charts for a significant amount of time. Albums are most successful when they can maintain on the charts, not when they are #1 for a week and drop off.

That's very nice. It shows that the low sales are a general phenomenon.
But I don't understand: only with 78.000 in Japan and 24.000 in the US we should be higher than that! If that chart has been done before Japan and Australia sales were published we could be even in a better position!

Cruisin' California was a good international marketing attempt - that stuff goes over well internationally where audiences are less judgmental about 'genre', but the charts are proving otherwise. Judging by the promo posters (just bought one last week!), we can expect Secrets from the Underground to be the 3rd single.
