(03/09/05) The Offspring are wrapping up sessions with producer Jerry Finn who also produced the band‘s version of “I Wanna Be Sedated“ for the We‘re A Happy Family Ramones tribute album. They have been working on new songs, covers and even reworked older songs. The plan is to add one of these tracks to a “greatest hits“ collection due later this year.

Dexter says the new stuff is “rockin‘“ and “the sessions with Jerry are working out great.”

Dexter also joined up with members of other 2005 Warped Tour bands recently for an Alternative Press cover shoot in LA. The issue will hit news stands in May. Warped Tour dates should be announced soon so check back here for the latest news.

Finally some official news.

you are right, but... AMERICANA is so commercial too (with "pretty fly for a white guy" for example) and O'briand didn't work in this CD.... what kind of music Offspring will do for the future???

pd; sorry about my english :p

yeah, o' brian did good work with bands like rage against the machine, he IS a good producer. but, i agree, the offspring's albums recently sounded too slick, for a punk rock record.
and why add "one" of these new songs to the greatest hits? if youre gonna work on them, add them all! make up for the ten song splinter.

Maybe they decided it would be stupid to release a greatest hits and then have singles for the new album come out soon afterwards, so maybe they've switched the order around.

Jerry Fin has worked with tons of great bands, and he's a pretty cool producer in the music biz. He co-produced AFI's "Sing the Sorrow", and recently mixed Eisley's full length debut album, "Room Noises". I hear he produces more pop punk material, for instance, I think (though, I'm not sure) he produced some of the New Found Glory albums, as well as done some of Blink 182's discs.

I trust this guy will do the band justice.

I'm soo stoked about the new material. I know this isnt too popular with some people but splinter, whilst it could have done with one or two more songs, was my favorate album. I agree that out of the rest of the albums the earlier stuff is better but the new album jus hits the spot interms of the meanins of the songs and the sound with Lightning Rod being the perfect balence off lyrics and a well built song. Its always good to have a change but i think they have done some steller work under o'brian.

Yeah they are working on new songs, so maybe in 2006 a complete new album :)

That would suck ass. The Offspring are my favorite band, but im tired of the long waits between the albums.

1-The Offspring (1989)
2-Ignition (1992)
3-Smash (1994)
4-Ixnay On The Hombres (1997)
5-Americana (1998)
6-Conspiracy Of One (2000)
7-Splinter (2003)

From self titled to Ignition it was 3 years. From Ignition to Smash, it was 2 years (which I dont really mind). From Smash to Ixnay it was 3 years. From Ixnay to Americana it was 1 year (which is great). From Americana to CO1 it was 2 years (again, not bad). From CO1 to Splinter it was 3 years.

Three times we had to wait 3 years for a new album. I dont mind waiting 2 years and even beter 1 year. 2006 would be another 3 year wait depending on its release date. If the new album was released early it would be 2 years. If its released late 2006 its another 3 year wait.

Im a huge fan, but its a little rediculous if you ask me. Im expecting a new album in 2005 between September-October. The new songs on GH will keep be busy until then cause its seems it will be release between May or June.

2-Come Out And Play (Smash) (1994)
3-Self Esteem (Smash) (1994)
4-Gotta Get Away (Smash) (1995)
5-All I Want (Ixnay On The Hombres) (1997)
6-Gone Away (Ixnay On The Hombres) (1997)
7-The Meaning Of Life (Ixnay On The Hombres) (1997)
8-I Choose (Ixnay On The Hombres) (1997)
9-Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) (Americana) (1999)
10-Why Don't You Get A Job? (Americana) (1999)
11-The Kids Aren't Alright (Americana) (1999)
12-She's Got Issues (Americana) (1999)
13-Original Prankster (Conspiracy Of One) (2000)

It would be a great thing if they released a Greatest Hits DVD. With videos and live preformances. Plus the new songs. That I would buy.

Its true, they should put on more than one track of all the covers, reworkings and new songs they are writing. If they are reworking old ones, lets hope they are working on some pre-Smash. Not that I want Atom to shit on Ron Welty's beats but some new takes on old songs with a new member could be good for the fans. I would love to hear Atom blasting thru Session, Kick Him When He's Down or Blackball.

Or maybe have the acoustic version of Dirty Magic that they played at some of the shows a few years ago. It would be nice for them to rethink and go back to looking at their older material. Maybe the band might actually learn something about songwriting. A refresher course may remind them how good they were. Not too say Splinter was without its killer tracks but songs about hangovers and prison don't do a great band justice.

Just hope Defy You gets on the comp as that was a brilliant song that didn't get the right distribution but was amazing!

I don't think the band need to do any more covers though. Unless of course they are covering their own.

It's pretty sad...This is what Dexter said in the history part on the website: “I listened to some of our older stuff, and tried to pick out what the charm of it was, without repeating myself. I feel good about this record. We‘ve mixed things up a bit.“ It's a great idea to try to sound as they did before, but I really don't think it worked...Splinter is far from Smash, Ignition or Self-Titled (which I orderd three weeks ago, and still haven't got it. the website, http://www.cdon.com/ said that delivery takes 2-6 days...I just hope I'll get it someday...

You're right, but I just dont see what takes so long about recording 1 new track, a Dirty Magic re-work and a Police cover. They announce it in September of 2004 (if I remember correctly). It's been like 6 month's since then. All they have to do is record a few tracks. Its really questioning me.
