I was flipping channels the other day when I stopped to watch MTV's "I Want a Famous Face" in part because I find it a fascinating, small-scale, look at that current state of our nation's obsession with looks, personal improvement, celebrities and quick fixes, and in part because the chick on it was hot. She wanted to be like Carmen Electra, a fantasy that she'd been entertaining for years, apparently. Anyway, at one point in the show, close to surgery time, she was talking to the camera about her desire to be on the cover of Maxim and some of her doubts about the upcoming procedure when she mused "I know God gave me a lot of great attributes, but God also made plastic surgery."

I think that that quote is such a great glimpse into society's psychology.

That shit is seriously disgusting. I watched a couple of shows like that. And sometimes good make up tricks can fix that but nooo, people gotta go for surgery. We're doing stuff with out bodies it's so creepy.

Did you see the one where they guy wanted to look like Brad Pitt, but just ended up looking only slightly better than previous?

it is sad. and i really mean that. it makes me SAD.
everybody feels unattractive at some point, but going for surgery because of that temporary problem is a psychological issue...

Argh yeah, was that those twins? They looked nothing like Brad Pitt... they did look better than before, but i mean, all that money and pain for hardly any change....

All goes in favour of my theory that people think all their problems would go away if they looked a certain way, and that the whole look thing is just a cover-up of being miserable out of completely other reasons and looking for a quick fix (in most cases). So, just like Nina said, a deep psychological problem.

A nice, fast growing industry of selling happiness. Weeo us!

Not saying that I'm a huge supporter or anything but it's easy to say such things when you're naturally gorgeous. For people who are just hideously ugly, I can understand why they would want surgery.

I really hate the concept of "natural" too. Clearly anything that humans have interfered with in any possible way is unatural. Either that or it's all natural. Take your pick. I guess that relates to the God comment. God didn't make hair brushes either. Is brushing your hair unatural? Etc. So sure, God made plastic surgery as much as God did anything else that humans have been involved with.

Exactly.

Although really for some people I can't see plastic surgery improving things that much. Take me for example - I know I don't have a perfect face but I can't see anyway that I could improve it. But there are some people that could. And if they can, well let them if they want to. It's easy for those of you (us!) that are good looking.

Also guys are generally lucky looks wise, we can just hit the gym and have an awesome bod. That's where I kinda feel for girls, they can be thin or whatever but guys look at faces a lot more in my experience.

Betty

And breasts? Can't fix that at the gym.

Its so sad that the human being lets themselves be brainwashed by the medias idea of what is beautiful. Especially letting it come down to surgery.
I find it rather weird that people like paris hilton are seen as beautiful.(something you would want to look like to come back to that program)
When she really does scare the fuck out of me.

Personally, I think that there's somewhat of a difference in temporarily moving your hair around or putting a layer of chemicals on your skin to smooth it out and permanently changing your bone structure.

And Sarah, I usually skip the male ones. I loved the plastic surgery show where the dude got calf implants, though. That was priceless.

nah, it wasn't a typing mistake. It's just something I say, like when people actually say "I hatche you". Or in some cases, I use it as a joke :D

I don't think we're talking seriously disfigured people here, more like people who have some strange idea that a new nose/chin/pair of breasts will make them happy and loved. And I just can't see how that can be a good solution.

I mean, women come to those shows who look perfectly fine, all they need is a slight attitude/hair/make up/style change, but noooooooo, they get new lips/boobs/nose/cheeks/chin/ass/legs/whatnot and boom, their whole life has changed.

I completely agree with Inshane, about the popular idea of beauty. It really does get scary sometimes.

But I disagree with RXP, about bodies being more important with males. Completely untrue in my case. Then again, as previously noted, I have strange taste in men *shrug*

That's what I'm talking about. Everyone has something they'd like to have fixed. But in some cases it's just pointless, it's insecurity and not being able to accept yourself the way you are. If it's really an issue/disproportional thing/result of an accident, go for it, it's alright. But if you look perfectly fine and think omg, I want my nose just like God knows which celebrity, excuse me that's lame.

Also, muscly guys are disgusting. A little is okay. When it comes to looks I go for face first, body ALWAYS comes second.

Um,I haven't read everyone's posts,so sorry if anyone has said this already. I disagree with what some ppl are saying -that plastic surgery is disgusting. Don't get me wrong,I wouldn't want to look like anyone but myself, but if I could afford it,I would spend thousands on making myself look better. There are parts of me that I like ,but there are parts of me that I hate. I can't leave the house without being caked in make-up because my skin is so bad. On the few occasions that I have had to leave the house makeup-free,I have spent the whole time wanting to hide and praying that I don't bump into anyone I know. If I could have surgery or something else to make my skin better and stop me feeling like this,I would. Not being happy with the way you look is detrimental to the self-esteem,so why shouldn't these ppl have surgery? If it makes them feel better about themselves, surely its a good thing?

I agree. bahahahghf.

I'm not big on the whole "natural" look, but plastic surgery grosses me out. as others pointed out, there is a HUGE difference between wearing some glittery stuff on your face/brushing your hair/etc AND shaving off your eyebrow bones, which can lead to horrifying infections.

What reallly pissed me off was the editor of Teen Vogue (she made an appearance in the last episode). She said "well, like, who DOESN'T have a nose job?". I don't, you fucking bimbo whore bag. Is she even aware of the impact her words might have on the TEENAGE readers of her little crapass magazine?

And Betty, sure you can't enlarge your tits at a gym. Does that mean it's a good thing that women get implants which can (and do) cause nightmarish side effects (capsular contracture being one of the MILDEST ones). You said that you can understand plastic surgery if the person in question was hideously ugly. Having small breasts, however, does not equal being hideously ugly (by most people's standards, at least).

There's a difference for sure. But that it's attributed to being "natural" or having to do with "god" I agree less. I would maybe prefer to call it "drastic"?

Izie and Goddess... I do agree with you guys... and I definitely wouldn't get plastic surgery for myself or recommend it for most people... but the point was just that you guys are both gorgeous and even if you think you aren't sometimes, it's still so much easier to say "Yeah, who cares about your looks" etc. I guess a little jab that was both an immense compliment and al little jab all at the same time. Just a devil's advocate thing.

Sunny, of COURSE people shouldn't get breast implants silly. I was just calling RXP on his "face" comment. I love my tiny breasts. And apparently the boys always think they are larger than they are, so meh, whatever people want to think is FINE with me.

Again, about the face thing... in all honesty I would only consider surgery a viable option for REALLY ugly people. Not just run of the mill average people like myself. In my opinion.

bad skin + lots of make-up = even worse skin
if it's really that bad go see a doctor. they'll put you on some shitty antibiotics which won't work and then they'll send you to a skin specialist who'll put you on roaccutane which is absolutely fucking fantastic.

on the subject of surgery, i'm not entirely sure what to think. i could never ever have plastic surgery, but i don't really care that other people do. what annoys me about surgery, and this is really stupid, is the lazy people. i hate it that people have stuff like liposuction. i don't know much about it but surely they can just exercise for fuck's sake?

Thanks for the advice. :) I am going to the doctor's about it. :) I have taken antibiotics (Oxytetracycline) for my skin before which actually cleared my skin up,but the trouble is, it only works temporarily as you build up a resistance to it and have to take higher and higher doses until it eventually stops working at all. That's why I stopped taking it. Never been on Roaccutane thogh. Hope it works if I am prescribed it. What I really want is a skin peel/skin resurfacing etc aswell as something to keep my spots away because my skin-tone is bad, even without the spots. I want to see a dermatologist for advice on that kind of thing,as I don't want to go to just anyone for a skin peel etc. I want go to someone reputable. If I'm going to pay for skin treatments,I'll make sure I go to someone who's going to do it right! I would be so much more confident if I had perfect skin. It would save me hours of time,as even after I've done my make-up and left the house,I'm still looking in mirrors/shop windows all day to see if my makeup has worn off and if so,to re-touch it. It's a pain in the arse, and rather depressing. :(

How the fuck do calf implants work? Surely they feel soft n shit? I had about bicep implants and thought wtf you'd have to also get your tricep done cause big bis without big tricep would look real odd.

Also Iz, you and I have different tastes in men. But from my experience girls really dig guys with hot bodies. Where as most girls I know that are slim have hot bods but if they don't have the face they ain't hot.

Of course it's a matter of taste. But it's rare you see a guy with a hot body but you always see young girls with nice hot bods. Well any girl who isn't fat has a hot body to me. Evne if she does have small tits.

Depends on what you find a hot body (about guys) ;) And if you mean with good muscles and stuff, we have a lot of those here... Maybe that's why they're not that much fun to me.

Btw, what are we actually arguing about? No, wait, we aren'r arguing? I'm confused. :/

I think we're saying that if a guy is buff hes' hot but if a girl has a hot bod without a hot face she's not hot. And you're saying the reverse.

Maybe in Engalnd it's rarer but here there is hardly anyone who's ripped.

All I was orginally saying is a guy can 'improve' himself by goin to the gym and gilrs will like him if he has a muntish face. Where as if a girl is a munter and has a nice body it won't be rated as high. If you get me.

True, but we've established it's a matter of taste. Btw, I go for faces before bodies with girls too.

I get you. I agree about who can improve what - bodies can be improved, faces not really. And the only problem here is the first thing we've established, that what we prefer is a matter of taste ;)

Thank you for making me not-confused :)

Heres how it works:

Rich dad + rich mom = rich kid. Rich kid gets what ever they want. Rich kid thinks they're ugly? They have money for plastic surgery. It's not because they need it, it's more of America's need to flaunt riches. It's the reason kids wear polos, not because they're comfortable (which they aren't!) but because theyre expensive.

if antibiotics don't work they will almost certainly prescribe you roaccutane. and that practically is a skin-peel. you'll have lovely dry flaky skin for however many weeks you're on it (tip, buy lots of vaseline for your lips, otherwise they'll be rather manky), and your skin gets kinda weak so doing other shit to it isn't really a good idea. but you end up with good skin, so yay
