Yes we all know this. Look at Splinter's sales, no publicity, no platinum and fame. You don't have to go sell out to be a rock legend, Sum 41 definantly will be remembered as one of todays greatest, are they sell outs, no. The Greatest Hits CD is Their last chance to make it. If you guys are reading(Dexter, Noodles, Greg, Atom) pleeez get lots of publicity without going sellout or poser. put your videos back onto MTV and FUSE regular play and get noticed and STAY NOTICED THIS TIME!!!!

They are noticed, by the people who actually like them. If they become too famous, all these preppy douche bags will say they like them to look cool, then their concerts will be full of preppy douche bags. That would suck ass.

I sincerely dont give a fuck bout all the moronic rocker wannabes that might or might not become offspring fans if they become a more famous band. Those ppl can listen to fucking Britney Spears while wearing offspring shirts if they want, for all i care. To me all that matters is that i live in a country where its difficult to have access to the work of international bands unless their really really famous, and that sucks. I havent heard bout offy on the local mtv or magazines since the release of splinter. If offspring becoming more famous will help me out, as a fan, to have more access to their stuff, then so be it. I'll happily put up with whatever trendy dumbass comes my way...

On another note I know what the topic creators getting at. While the offspring are a huge established band, they are certainly not in the public eye (In the uk at least, although i saw a video for HIT THAT on a pop music channel at like 3am on freeview once, I was amazed!)...

I doubt there in the average teeny boppers "kl listz" either now, if they ever were??

Yeah getting merch isn't that easy. Compare these guys to Green Day and its like your local pub playing band...

I hate the fact small time bands are hard to get hold of any merch... All my fave bands are fairly small time... Capdown, farse, lightyear, etc... Ah well.

Splinter was their downfall since it had no advertising, a poor video for the first single, and not much of a spectacular second single to stand out and keep CD sales going. Serious Splinters peak was #30 on the charts that is aweful for a huge band like the Offspring! Co1 almost went 2 times platinum, they were still sucessful and big then, too bad it ended up this way :(. I hope they make one more CD that goes at least gold and a greatest hits CD and then call it quits, itd be a good memorable career!

i wouldnt mind mtv showing some live offspring playing stuff off ixnay and smash an stuff, i think that is who they really are , most people who watch mtv probably know them as a humourous, pop punk for hits like... why don't you get a job .....pretty fly and original prankster, kinna makes a wrong impression

The Offspring don't need fame. They've got enough money and us, fans that will always go to their concerts and love them. They've got all they could ever need. So why to be famous even more?

How many copies have they sold of Splinter? You got me intrigued. Is it so bad?!

Man.. The Offspring really haven't been popular recently, but fuck it. Ya know? The Offspring will always kick ass to me, whether they are on MTV or not. But it really sucks that Splinter really didn't do well. Conspiracy of One did really well, about as well as Americana I think... but hey, Ixnay didn't sell well either when it came out, but it was still a very good album, come on. (Can't) Get My Head Around You and Hit That were played when Splinter first came out on the radio... but then they just died down and nobody really played it that much anymore... they do still play old stuff sometimes on the radio though, but the Splinter singles aren't really played anymore... atleast not on any radio stations out here.

less then a million worldwide

Popularity probably doesn't mather that much if you're in the US/UK since they'll probably tour there anyway, but when you're living in a smaller country it does. I don't really see them doing the more "underground circuit" again, since they did that for like 10 years already before smash.

less than a million....damn thats bad!

tho i kinda expected that, theres only a couple of good songs in that album in my opinion... and i think theyre' choice for the single was a poor one. however, i can see they they chose hit that to be a lil different then their usual stuff, but it didnt turn out so well. you gotta applaud them for trying new things tho. the band is evolving and its something most people arent used to.

but i dont think they are very concerned about sales. they prolly built a very large nest egg after smash and theyre prolly just trying new stuff for the hell of it :p

as for the concert thing....hey they dont even play some of the big cities... its not their fault tho, its usually the fault of the people who book the shows. thats just the business, you gotta deal with it unfortunately...

1. I don't think they ever read or post here (with the exeption of Noodles. But if you notice he only ever posts in Politics).

2. It's not they're falt with the whole "low publicity" thing, it's fucking Columbia's. They don't averatise any band on their lable as long as Jessica Simson is still alive.

3. MTV sucks anyways, all they do now is that Reality-TV shit. MTV2 on the other hand is probly the better way to go.

i felt splinter received its fair share of publity, all bands need some sort of publicity, but good music and raw talent will always shine through! unfortunately for the offspring, the only songs people will recognize are hit that and cant get my head around you - the will miss all the greats, the noose, lightning rod etc.

too many stars get the publicity and do the things to get noticed but once the novelty has worn off and the the label has made their money they dont care!

sum41 were fortunate in my opinion, they came along during the pop punk explosion, theyve changed their sound slightly for the better but i fell they are still trying a little too hard to live the rock star lifestyle and instead of trying something new just copy what other bands have already done!

I don't know
04-05-2005, 04:49 PM
maybe it's better not having a lot of fucking publicity

Well what I meant was that they should put Gone Away, All I Want, Self Esteem(even though the video is terrible), Can't Get My....., Want You Bad, and then they should make a video for The Noose. Well if not, hopefully the warped tour will help. It's not that I want to make other peoples decisions, but if you've got THAT type of potential your stupid to waste it.

I still hear Gone Away on the radio now and then... I think its important for them to promote their stuff other wise the younger age group probably wonte ever have an oppertunity to like offspring and they would probably die down and become forgotten. My lil sis is 11 and she likes Offspring from hearing them from me, but because media makes bands like Green Day, Simple Plan etc seem "cooler" kidz arnt interested in whats not hot, plus they get brainwashed into thinkin one way. Even tho I think MTV is commercialised Offspring need to get their work noticed, and consider thier fans that dont get to the oppertunity to see em so much (Life without Offspring is a life not worth living) lol jk

Splinter reminds me a lot of Ignition... an explosive album showing the very soul of the Offsping threaded through imaginative lyrics and grinding riffs and as we all know, Ignition was the immediate predecessor to the all time classic Smash. As history has always had a way of repeating it's self, I can see an upward spiral gaining momentum in a new direction with more power than what we've hereto seen. The Offspring has not reached it's potential, just sit back and watch the future unfold.

I understand your concern but I do not agree with you. I think what killed the offspring is the bad music they put out now. My two cents that doesn't mean much…smash sold 8 millions…(maybe more now…) I never saw any advertising for it in magazines or tv, radio.

I'm glad you noticed that about Sum 41. I'm almost feel guilty in liking them alot of times because of how much people incorporate them with My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte, etc., but they're not alike much at all.

But yeah, and make the videos worth watching. An animated man chasing his animated dog and an awkward shaped room spinning around? I know there must be better ideas.

I think it's unfair! My friend is huge Linkin Park fan and he's happy, because he can see Linkin Park on TV and in magazines every fuckin' day. But why can't I see The Offspring on TV? Because Splinter's singles screwed all up? No! It's becouse The Offspring probably don't give a fuck about their fans! I know that I crossed the line, but something on that may be true! Guys don't like to do videos and interviews for MTV? That's the reason! But before everyone here starts attacking me (saying that the band doesn't need MTV), you've got to realize, that MTV is only way to the spotlight. And when The Offspring aren't in the spotlight, it's logic we can't see any their videos or concerts on ANY TV. Just think about it...

Hey I want to hear Gone Away on the radio! What do you listen to? The most rocky station that I have access to is radio 2!! I've heard about XFM, but it's based in London and I can't get it without a big-ass aerial!

I think it's gotten to the point if someone turns on MTV and sees a music video they sit back in their chairs and scream at the top of their lungs "WHAT THE IS SHIT IS THIS DOING ON THIS CHANNEL! I WANT TO SEE WHO THE WINNER OF ROAD-RULES MEANTS REAL WORLD XXVIII!!" Not that I have a problem with those show inparticular, (Actally, I have respect for those two shows becuase their still on the air) I'm just using them as a reference because their on that channel.

WHO FUCKING CARES IF THEY GET MORE PUBLICITY!! they're a good band and i dont care if i see them on tv or not!! i mean it would be cool but its not like it really matters!! and no matter wat u r still gonna c GC and simple plan and shit like that on tv cuz thats wats big. yeah i agree i hate them and think they should be killed. but a bands publicity level shouldn't be that big of a deal. and its kinda better for them that they dont get a lot of publucity cuz then if they get to much and can ruin their family life and shit like that cuz u c wat happened to gc they were in every mag. tabloid and it ruins peoples lives. so u also should think about stuff like that but its obvious you dont.
