Here we have the Trojan priest Laocoon; the gods were displeased with him and so sent serpents to kill him and his two sons.

And here is the Apollo Belvedere (the beautiful Apollo), the god of the sun, music, prophecy, poetry and healing, damn fine statue:

I have a personality, I just happen to be interested in classics! I like chess, squash and badminton too! :D

Look, VI was merely pointing out to Voodoo that Apollo is the god of music and Dionysos, wine.

Just thought I'd post a picture of Pentheus who was torn apart by his own daughter. :p

Look, Voodoo was wrong, I was merely correcting him so that he didn't make a complete idiot of himself at a later date.

Do you really think ANYONE except you would have noticed?

Do you really think ANYONE except you would have noticed?

YES! It was a well known fact! Are you telling me that you don't know what Apollo was god of? You do! It's just common knowledge to a lot of people.

Alright, let me rephrase that..

Do you really think ANYONE except you would give two shits if he got what Apollo was the God of wrong?

I had absolutely no idea who Apollo or any of those figures were. It's not common knowledge, it's a subject you and some people you know are passionate about.

I'm pretty passionate about Major League Baseball, but I don't expect you to know who Mike Mussina or Alfonso Soriano are, know what I mean?

Replace "interested" with "obsessed", and "personality" with "other boring interests".

As Nigel Spivey said on the 6th of May (I went to one of his lectures :D) "classicists are not 'weird', merely 'eccentric'." So I'm not obsessive, maybe just a bit eccentric. :p

they're not boring interests - you said yourself that you used to play chess.

It is common knowledge. Just like the fact that Zeus was king of the gods. Unholy knew.

The Animal Liberation front and Al-Quaeda consider themselves 100% right. Doesn't mean they are.

I only know because there was a robot on Robot Wars called Zeus and they explained it (yes, I used to watch Robot Wars). So it was hardly a classics thing.

Okay, I'll give you that one, I know about Zeus and I can't imagine anyone in the universe who wouldn't know about Zeus, but as far as classics as a whole go, it's not common knowledge.

and I know Zeus is the king of gods and the god of lightning, just like I knew Apollo was the sun god. I never heard of him being the god of any of those other things, so "common knowledge" vs. "common knowledge among people that have taken classes about it" are two entirely different things.

who's Nigel Spivey?

A great great classicsit with a history of art series which is currently showing on BBC2 (you really need to see the other thread to understand)

Also I knew who Zeus and most of the other gods were long before my first classics lesson!

You gave a shit. Normal people don't.

no i didn't - I was 'normal' then. Ah, it was only in my first Latin lesson in year 7 (age 11) that I er...developed a passion for classics

I'm not obsessing - i'm merely defending myself and my passion!

Normal eleven year olds don't give a shit about classics. Nobody normal gives a shit about classics, and nobody normal cares about anything to the extent you OBSESS over this bullshit.

Please, Tripboy, for the love of God, FUCK OFF. You are such an annoying bastard. What are you like 24? Go elsewhere...and stop insulting 17 yr olds who are smarter than you.

Re-read the other thread. You dribbled bullshit at voodoomagik for ages, and at the end you came to the conclusion that he was sort of right anyway. What the fuck does that prove?

Dead Cheerleader, I'm so goth I shit bats. Fo' real!

well he was correct in one respect but wrong in another, namely that Dionysos was god of music and that Apollo wasn't.

Hey Dead Cheerleader! I was just off, later. :)

I saw on the picture box the other day that Dionysus is the god of WINE. I am confused now.

Bacchus is the god of wine too.

Four Dead Cheerleaders is the name of a Dropkick Murphys song. It's not intended to be gothic at all...you dumb fucks.

I'd say the greek and latin gods are quite common knowledge. c'mon Zeus, Aphroditie etc. Plus anyone who's watched Hercules and Xena knows all about this shit.

What RXP said, Hercules and Xena were teh shit.

I was interested in Greek mythology as a kid. Then I *grew*out of it. Norse mythology totally pwn3s those Greek fags.

Noodles is gay

I didn't like that Hercules film - too much singing and not enough accuracy :p Although Pain and Panic were awesome.

No way! Greek mythology kicks Norse mythology's ass.

We're talking about the tv-series, with Kevin Sorbo. teh rox0rz.

Norse mythology rocks. Do you understand the implications of a society that has a religion in which all the Gods die?

ohh, ok - that wasn't too bad i guess.

Of course I do (they can die in Discworld :o), but still Greek mythology rocks, especially with the really obscure myths and the family curses etc.
