The Beastie Boys, an inarguably rap group, are not played on any rap stations. Instead, their music is played on rock stations. Do you think that the Beastie Boys just that fuckin' rockin' that they belong to rock moreso than rap, or it this an example of latent racism in American society?

Discuss amongst yourselves.

I like the Beastie boys but I don't whether it's racist though, what about Eminiememem? He was supported by Dr. Dre and that's why he got big in rap

What's worse is hearing Eminem on rock stations. At least with the Beasties they've created much of their music with live instruments and have a punkish energy. Eminem is pure hip-hop to the core, and there's no other reason to play him other than his honkacity. To know they'd be playing Outkast and whatnot if only they were white is....not such a happy thought about the world.

ok, a bit off-topic, what the hell is BewareTheHeat.com (http://www.bewaretheheat.com), and why did I sign up to it? Is it some kind of protest against global warming? Cause that's what I'm thinking.

OutKast gets played on Top 40 radio...but it's true, the hip hop stations generally don't touch the Beastie Boys. I definately think it's a race thing.

it indeed makes little sense & I fully agree with what Ozy said. they do have -that- kind of energy, that gives them a rock-ish flavour. & Eminem indeed -doesn't- belong on rock-stations.

But he's white! All white people have to get played on rock stations! It's the rock law!

Beastie Boys don't get played on hip hop stations because most of their music isn't up to date. They're too old school. New or current rappers who stick to the old school style, regardless of color, NEVER get played on hip hop stations either. Kool G Rap, for example. He's a black man, and a legend who everybody in the rap game respects, but he hasn't updated his flow or style one bit. Plain and simple, the kiddies nowadays don't like it, and he never gets played on rap radio.

Whenever the Beastie Boys do come out with something a bit more fresh and current, they get played on Hip-Hop stations quite often. Intergalactic was played like crazy. It looks like race is definitelyt a factor as far as that goes, but believe it or not, it really isn't.

Now, as far as why the Beasties do get played on rock radio, I can't get into, 'cause I just don't know why. It is fucking sad to see people like the Beasties and "hate rap and would never listen to that 50 Cent shit". That's like saying you like New Found Glory but "hate rock and would never listen to that Led Zeppelin shit". They're world's apart.

*nostalgic sigh* It'd been so long since I educated all my buddies on the innerworkings of hip hop.

they're played on our local black music oriented station.

stop listening to the fucking radio already.

I haven't willfully listened to the radio in about 7 years. Living here, however, hip-hop radio is unavoidable (on the streets, friends' houses, etc.). Fortunately, I love and am passionate about hip-hop, and though most of the shit on the radio sucks, there are some gems out there.

You're kind of missing the point, doc. My point is that there are just as many groups and genres of rap as there are of rock, punk, etc.

Besides, Led Zeppelin doesn't rule.

Mabye, she's not really hip hop, but she's played on those stations now.

Gwen Stefani is about as hip hop as Pink Floyd, no matter what station she's played on.

i think this is not only the reason for why they wont get played on hip-hop stations, but also the reason for them getting played on rock stations.
they are not ROCK, but they are probably being heard rather by people who enjoy the rock genre (and with that i mean everything that isnt pop / hiphop / classical / country) than the other ones who enjoy the music i've listed in braces.
maybe thats just me, but people who are into "rock" (see definition above) tend to listen to "oldschool" music and think its cool. i dont only think of the beastie boys, but also bands like the beatles.

No need to apologize, ShadowPyro. And those songs aren't hip hop or rap or even close either.

...at least one person. i never thought i could possibly express myself in a way that ANYBODY understands.
btw, i hate wannabe "omg i love oldschool stuff" type of people; people who listen to the beatles just to be cool (but cant name a single song), who have marilyn monroe bags with stars and stones and who wear pin up dresses that dont fit them.
eep.

Tut tut, incorrect grammar, you should say "Led Zeppelin DON'T rule"

I start good threads.

Johnny, while I don't totally disbelieve you, you've yet to completely sway me. Yes, the Beastie's last CD was a return to the old school, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't incredible. And yes, many black artists have come out with similarily awesome pieces of work that wasn't nearly as widely played, but their CD sales fell short of the Beastie Boy's also. The Beastie's move hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of records each time they release an album. Most of that is going to white boys, white boys that listen to rock radio. Yes, honkies also purchase the vast majority of rap music, but only the Beatie's are rock-exclusive, even Jay-Z's Rick Ruben-produced "99 Problems" with a heavy rock crossover chord wasn't replayed. OK, I've already lost track of my train of thought, someone got to me over AIM, so I'm leaving you with this.

Beastie Boys don't quite fit into the whole gangsta scene, and that's why I think rap stations don't play 'em.

I'm tempted to maybe agree with Nina on this one...

I know I personally don't listen to much rap/hip hop... I'm not ashamed to admit to liking a catchy song... but overall the style doesn't appeal to me.

But I have heard at least most of the Beastie Boys singles, partly just because of the "old school" thing. I am very not up to date on them however.

Anyway: vicious cycle. They get played on rock radio (cause they have a rock edge), people who like rock hear them, like them, and wanna hear more. Why they're not played on hip hop stations I'd imagine is what Rick explained.

Incorrect. Led Zeppelin no longer make music, thus, it should be Led Zeppelin didn't rule.

Anyway, back to the point..

I think the Beastie Boys are played on rock stations because they're an odd little group. No doubt they are hip-hop, but their image isn't really what one would consider hip-hop at all. They're quite different, and out there. Thus, it's hard to pidgeon-hole them. I've seen a lot of these kinds of groups played on rock stations. I don't think it really has anything to do with race.
