Finished Trainspotting last week. It was great! Hilarious, and yet meaningful. Looking forward to reading more of Welsh's books.

Now reading Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth. The language is a bit....simple? There's no frills to the writing, and is rather unchallenging, but I'm starting to get into it. One other complaint is the use of the term "hot body". Sorry, but historical fiction should not contain that term!

    Murakami is fabulous!

I loved Kafka on the Shore. Such wonderful ideas.

I wasn't too impressed with Colourless Tsukuru Tazaki though

I very much want to read IQ84, but haven't felt like I had enough time to take the plunge until recently. I have 5 books arriving in the mail otherwise I'd take the plunge now.

I do love Kafka on the Shore though, it's quite excellent - properly done magical realism really feels like something else as a reading experience. I think of The Tiger's Wife the same way.

Either way it's a nice change from my biography of Joseph Conrad, which was dry but interesting, and the second book of the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson, which is both fantasy and crap. I read the whole thing, so I suppose any criticism should feel grudging by virtue of that, but he is an awful writer.

Finally I've been making my way through Sam Riviere's 81 Austerities. I am not much for poetry in the main, but there are some very clever and engaging short poems in the book. There are others that I find typically post-modern and soporific.

I'm enjoying book 2 of the Stormlight Archive. Sanderson once answered an e-mail I wrote to him, so I'll die believing he's a great writer, even if his next book is largely copy/pasted from the phone book.

Otherwise I want to read Les Mis, but I'm going to have to wait for a vacation or something, as I don't want to break it down into the 5-20 min chunks of reading I do these days.

I listen to a lot more audiobooks, but those don't count. I can do that for a large portion of my working day.
