    Dambisa Moyo: Dead Aid

Summary: Shaky econometrics/statistics. Shitload of aid been given to Africa, hardly any development growth. So aid is bad, what's need is more open capital markets, more debt by African countries. The amount of Internet porn has been increasing, while the planet is warming. Should stop delete internet porn to cool the planet

Should read it: laissez faire people, ayn rand fanboys (and the occasional fangirl)

People that should avoid it: hippie liberal feminists who think having minorties in high positions will lead to brilliant new insights

    Levitt and Dubner: Superfreakonomics

Summary: Follow up to Freakonomics. Hence the original title. Lack of originality also goes for the content. Stuff everyone already knows, like most top athletes are born early in a year. Age cohorts 101 ahoy. Shaky econometrics is also here, it's better to drive drunk than to walk drunk. And since we need some publicity we'll pseudo deny global warming and offer some dumb solution.

People that should read it: people who mistake Michael Crichton for a non fiction writer, people who want to witness the collapse of experimental economics from the University of Chicago.

People that should avoid it: People who drink alcohol.

I bought Freakanomics a week ago. I haven't really read much of it yet, but apparently legalized abortion is the is the cause of the declining crime rate. eh.

I'm currently reading Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis. This detective gets hired by the govment to track down a stolen "real constitution" written by the founding fathers that no one but the president is allowed to know about. He travels around the country getting leads from sexual deviants after sexual deviants making his life miserable. It's crass, funny, and has Godzilla Bukkake. At lot of it is just seems to be shock value, but it's entertaining.

I'm also going through The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. I absolutely adored the first book, but this second isn't doing much for me so far. I'm really disappointed it hasn't made laugh any where near as as much as Hitchhiker's did.

As for school stuff, my commie professor is having us read Man's Worldly Goods, an economic history book, by Leo Huberman. It's surprisingly not boring me.

The original freakonomics is quite okay compared to superfreakonomics, a lot of it is based upon actual research instead of anecdotal evidence. The book is indeed quite famous for the abortion-crime rate link, except the econometric formula behind that link has shown to be faulty too (see here for instance) and obviously also the claim that legalized abortion let to a reduction (let alone it being one of the leading causes) in the crime rate has been refuted. But since that hasn't had any impact on their careers, it isn't surprising to see that the new book is full of such nonsense.

Reading "The Heart Of A Dog" by Mikhail Bulgakov right now. So far, interesting.

I also just ordered "The Baby Jesus Butt Plug" by Carlton Mellick, after reading a few reviews of his stuff. Sounds like it could be....er...bizarre.
