^The intro solo, or the octave passage in the middle? Either way, many thanks

And yeah, that's what I meant by "hokey." I have this deep, deep fear of lapsing into writing nothing but catchy pop tunes. Which is weird when you think about it, because I really like a lot of pop music (Green Day, Collective Soul, OK Go, etc.).

But yeah, it's pretty hard to deny your roots. I grew up on pop and rock and bluegrass, so yeah.

Hehe, nothing to fear, really. To me Offspring has the catchiest songs ever. A catchy song is super as long as song has some good message and your songs never been poppy message-wise.
And I meant the intro solo back there.

^Hah, thanks In any case, I'm glad you said that because I just realized I haven't posted the lyrics anywhere:

"You say that you love me, but is it true?
Would you say it again in a year?
You stuck around that long once, so far in the past
So you proved that it's not just for here and now

You say that you care what I do with my life
Would you stand here beside me forever
You sat by my side 'till the day that I died
So you proved that you would leave me never

But what's the point of this bickering mess
If it's not for the reasons it seems?
I don't think you understand, in spite of what you've done
That your love is not for me

It's for a part of me that you believe exists
It's for an afterlife of eternal bliss
It's hard to see how it's come to this
You're only taking orders from the man up above
It's him that you're thinking of when we're making love
And you don't see a problem there at all

You say that we're one, but you're really alone
'Cause to you, I'm just one of a dozen
A pawn in a great game where everyone's the same
    One of a million others

You say that you regret the day that we met
But that wasn't because of me
It's 'cause you want everyone to act just like you
To fear all the same things you do

So say goodbye for all the things you did
You're finally free to do the things you said
I'd give up my seat in the land up above
Just to get around the things that you're thinking of
If you'd just reconsider, you'd become what I am again

If you change your mind, you'll become what I am again."

In the version I uploaded, I said, "When you don't fear a God, you've become what I am again," but I thought that was a little too blatant so I toned it down a bit. I've redone the vocals and smoothed 'em out a bit because I overloaded in some places (bad habit of mine, heh). But yeah.

EDIT: It's about several things, really, but I guess the one thing it's about most of all is the "xHxcorex" Christian definition of "love," where you're basically driven out of a community and cast out as a social pariah, all under the blanket definition of "love" --- that "we love you and we don't want you to go to hell, so that's why we abuse you like this, because we want you to change!"

And I totally agree about the message thing. That's what I hate about so much pop nowadays, is that there's just fluff and nothing else. That's why I like that some more alternative bands are kind of sneaking into the pop scene, like Green Day and Offspring and Bad Religion --- it's kind of like they're injecting a vector-virus of intellect into a stagnant scene, ya know?

    New song, yay!

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/r9dn4c

Well, it's not technically new. But if you've ever wondered what The Offspring's "Americana" would sound like, sung in my shrill voice (and with the following lyrics), then today is your lucky day!

Well, I'd like to tell you all about my dream, it's a game
It's ten years later, not one fucking thing ain't the same
'Cause nothing is changing, it's just rearranging
Just doing the same shit a different way
    Everything's wasted in Americana '08

    Well, fuck you!

Whoa, whoa, whoa -- your dream has come true
Whoa, whoa, whoa -- your dream has come true

Well, give me a sweepstakes, another chance to sell my soul
If I had a platter right now, you could swallow it whole
My image defined by the things left behind
It's a quality find if you're fucking insane
Everything's fucked up in Americana '08

    Well, fuck you!

Whoa, whoa, whoa -- your vision is still true
Whoa, whoa, whoa -- your vision is still true
    Yeah, it'll always be true

    I am a product
    Of your environment
Don't blame me, I'm just born here, but I wanna FUCK YOU!!!

Dick Cheney's alive and the President's thriving
He's making sure nobody's left alive
Everything's fucked up in Americana today

    Well, fuck you!

Whoa, whoa, whoa -- our nightmare has come true
Whoa, whoa, whoa -- our nightmare has come true
    Yeah, it's always been true
    Yeah, it's always been true

^Sucky. I can't download it for some reason.

Anyway, I regret not listening to your myspace until now. You've got something and I likey. But the way you have to record drums sounds miserable. What drum machine are you using? If you want to stay in the "free" price range, I'd recommend Hydrogen (somewhere here). And let me know if you need some drum samples. They're not great, but they decent for free.

So you're the one with the higher voice? You totally sound 13 (in the awesomest way possible).

    ^Ah, thanks much!

BTW, if that download didn't work, maybe try this one:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/14727840...a__08.mp3.html

And yeah, I'm the one with the shrill voice As for the drums, most of our early stuff uses the drum machine on my sister's Casio keyboard (subpar even by drum machine standards), so it requires a lot of equalization to fix up to the point of listenability. However, I got a new electric drum kit a couple of weeks ago, and I've been practicing and experimenting with that on our more recent stuff. The tracks I actually play drums on are (IIRC):

    --What I Am (Again)
--D.R.P. (it's not on the Myspace, it's on our purevolume account)
--The Ground (2.0; I still have to put this one up)
--The new collaboration I'm finishing up mixing as I type this (it's called "Forget Me")
    --Americana '08

I think that's it for now. I'm also working on another original track called "Giving Up, Live It Up" that I'll play drums on.

I really, really want to learn how to play drums so I can at least record my own stuff without having to rely on a drummer (we can't find a drummer for shit right now; there are like 4 drummers in the tri-state area, and they're all already in like 5 bands apiece). So I'll be experimenting with some simpler stuff, and maybe some basic fills and whatnot, over the next few weeks, until I've gotten comfortable with the drums. Right now I kinda suck 0_0

EDIT: Here's the one we both sing on, called "Forget Me." I play drums on this one, too (and guitar and bass) Rapidshare and Sendspace links, respectively:

Dude, I like your voice a lot, for some inexplicable reason. Heh, and I dig the new take on Americana. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Btw, just a head's up, my "band" just friend requested you.

    Heartily accepted

P.S. Totally listening to the band page right now. Response in a bit~

EDIT: Your singer sounds kind of like me, I think 0_0 And BTW, love the acoustic Meaning of Life cover. I always like doing weird shit with covers

Alright, here's our new song for the moment. We're getting together again Friday to do 2 or 3 more, so be expecting those (or don't be)!

    http://rapidshare.com/files/14787370...It_Up.mp3.html
    http://www.sendspace.com/file/te5edf

I tried to focus more on instrumentation in this one, so be listening carefully to the guitars and bass and drums, not just the vocals. I'm getting a little better at the drums, but there's still one slip-up during the first chorus that I couldn't seem to get right. Oh, well --- I guess that's punx or whatever, so it's okay, right? (hah, j/k, you no get mad, please? Good times for everyone!)

Song title: "Giving Up, Live It Up"

"If you're gonna fight, you might as well believe in something
Or else you're just wasting your time
Running back and forth, running someone else's errands
Just waiting for your day to come so you can die

If you're gonna take shit, you might as well deserve it
Or else you're getting cheated out of life
Going up or going down, it's all the same to me
At the end of the day, I'm still not the way I want to be

Nothing's gonna change, not even me
It's always standing right it front for everyone to see
We're never gonna reach it and that's....fine with me....
I'm hesitant to believe in anything--

    --you say true
    I say, "to who?"
    You say, "to me"
But the problem is, I don't believe you

If you're gonna complain, at least say something smart
Or else it's just the same old schtick again
The puzzle pieces never change, the picture stays the same
But there's always someone there who thinks it's different

Nothing's gonna change, not even you
Not even after all that you've been through
You think you're gonna reach it, and that's....fine with me....
You're ready to believe in anything

If you're gonna fight, you must believe in nothing
Close your ears, and open up your eyes
Wave that flag high, wave it 'till it makes you cry
You'll need it when you get pushed aside

    The curtains have already parted
    The game has already started
    Everything we've ever said
Will be repeated 'till we're dead

    Everything I never said
Will be repeated 'till I'm dead
    Everything I never said
Will be repeated 'till I'm dead
    In my head."
    "I'm sorry
For all the things that I never did
For all the places I never was
For all the people I never stopped
But there was nothing I could do...
    "

You're quite strong lyricist! And song structure is great, more than a standard punk rock song, I also love fast tempo palm muting. Keep your spirit up!
