I've hesitated to post my thoughts on the song because people here can be REALLY critical about any ideas... but if you feel like ripping on my thoughts, you can shove it I think the song is about the Orwellian state of the current world, Silicon Valley, and learning everything you can about people for monetary gain.
This city’s made of diamonds
And tomorrow glass will grow
On the freedoms that divide us
They’re coming after me
To me, it seems Silicon Valley could be the "city" that's made of diamonds (money), and freedoms dividing us could be the freedoms internet companies have vs. freedoms people are supposed to have. "They're coming after me" just meaning that the "big brother" companies are coming after each of us.
Now who’s knock-knocking at your door?
A thought that starts a riot
They’re coming after me now
Reference to Orwell, I think. And Dead Kennedys.
Life is not the same
I am one but
Sparks turn into flames
Sparks = ideas, flames = destruction. Great ideas can lead to grand destruction.
Will you take what’s in my head?
And erase me when I’m dead?
Cause the future is now
And now I’m disappearing
The day has turned to night
Can you save me from the light?
Cause the future is here
And this is how I disappear
This reminded me from day one of the movie "Anti-Trust". Pretty horrible movie, but the premise involved stealing information/ideas/code from individuals and leaving them for dead, and then using that information to build their own overlording technology that connects us all. It made me think that maybe he's saying, "they" take what they can from us, get as much information as possible, and then don't really care what happens to us when we're dead because we're not actually important to them, we're only meant to be information sources.
It's just a theory, and it's probably wrong... but what I keep thinking about when I hear it.
