Default Smart Phone Usuage and Company

Well, it's yet another etiquette thing for the BBS to tackle. I never bothered to have an opinion on this until now, because my mom is on this streak where she's calling me out on using my smart phone in front of her.

My stance: I don't think it's rude to be on your phone while keeping company as long as you restrict your phone usage to about the same amount of time that you'd otherwise be using to sit there spacing out, not interacting anyway. I should get the same amount of socially acceptable non-interaction time as a version of myself without a smart phone would get. And I should be able to use that time as I see fit.

(You can't prove I'd be doing anything to acknowledge your existence right now if I didn't happen to have this phone so leave me alone, Mom!)
When they said "sit down", I stood up.

Okay, I tried to read through this, but I couldn't get very far past "BBS intellectuals." So, have a nice discussion. I will take my leave of this thread now.

It is rude if you keep someone company but have you concentration on something else. It is all right if you get a message and replies to it. If you start using your phone because you are bored, then you are not very respectful to your company. The issue of the restriction you suggest is that it cannot be measured. You cannot make the difference between if you have the phone now, and if you would not have it. And if your mother wishes that you do not use your phone in front of her, you ought to respect that.

    You could've spelled "usage" right.

Either it's about your company or it's about the phone. When you pull out your phone, you made a choice. Then you must live with it. Either spend time with your company or check email, but don't do both.

You use your smart phone when you are visiting others simply because there is a lapse in the "live" social interaction? That is really odd. Well, at least the phone is smart.

Yep, this is just plain weird. If I was hanging out with someone and they did this, I'd high tail it out of there and not hang out with them again. Only exception is if they made it known ahead of time that they were waiting for a super important email or something like that.

How is it weird to not want to waste my time not socializing with some anti-social weirdo who's just sitting on their phone? lol

I'm a huge supporter of this in social situations.

Sorry, what you said makes you sound like some old woman. Get off that darn phone! Get off that darn nintendo! And then you're going to stop hanging out with them because of it? Really strange, lol.

There might be some situations where being on your phone in someone's company for any significant amount of time is weird. Like if you're sitting across from someone on a date or something. But for the most part, it's not a bad thing to do if you keep it within reason. But what constitutes "keeping it within reason" is what's debatable.
