Default Weird stuff you eat where you live

A nice thread about gastronomy of your own country... things that theoratically sound absolutely disgusting but are actually good.

Let's start. Most of the weird stuff we eat in France is actually known from greasy duck liver to moldy cheese.

But there is one thing, that sounds really really disgusting and is absolutely delicious. I learnt about 2 years ago what it was made of and I admit I was a little bit disgusted for a while...

    Please welcome... The ANDOUILLE !

You see this circle pattern ? Well... it's pig intestine.

Not only pig intestine... it's actually the large intestine. So yeah... In my country, we eat pig rectum... and we love it.

    What about you ?

I had tongue for the first time today because it was really cheap. I don't know what it was the tongue of, my best guess would be a cow. It was ok.

Black pudding might be the only thing my nation eats that deserves to really get a mention in a thread like this.

They say that our Swedish fermented herring is weird. I have never had it myself, but I would like to try it some day.

So it just pretty much a sausage.

I have had tongue once. But it was a long time ago and only a slice on bread with mustard.

Black pudding is wonderful. But I do not see it as anything weird. In Sweden, we have "blodpudding" (literally "blood pudding") which is pig's blood with flour, some beer and spices. Using blood in cooking is not unique for any country.

Yeah, I don't disagree. I just think it's probably the weirdest thing England can offer, because England doesn't really offer much weird at all.

Jojan > Nooooooo, on a usual sausage, only the casing is made of pig intestine. Here pig intestine is the content.

It has the form of a sausage but it tastes nothing like a sausage

black pudding is also pretty common here... but it belongs in that thread because dried pig blood does sound disgusting.

Being a vegetarian I don't really eat any of the weird local stuff, but I do remember those awful days of bacon and cabbage and Irish stew. Yugh!

Like most weird foods, the local Cork stuff seems to be heavily influenced by pig parts.

Crubeens are boiled pigs' feet that are apparently to be eaten by hand. Mmm.

Drisheen is a type of back pudding with lots of blood and intestines, and is often served with tripe

I have no idea what I eat here that isn't eaten other places but I would like to find out. It seems like America steals everything though, so it's probably from somewhere else anyway. Vegemite, for instance, which I haven't eaten personally but I'd like to try(but I hear it's similar to beef bouillon). A friend of mine from Australia said she ate it on toast but now she uses Nutella.

Because I'm already sick and the color scheme must have set me off. Sorry about that.

Nutella is a much, much better choice.

Vegemite is basically the same as marmite, which is pretty horrible stuff. My mum actually drinks it diluted in hot water. I drank one cup and thought I was going to vomit. I finished it though, because I'm awesome like that. I sort of enjoy eating it occasionally just because it has such an incredibly strong, very unique taste and I like things that are out of the ordinary. But still, I'd have to say it's a horrible substance. A little goes a very long way.

I live right near Philly, so Cheesesteaks would be the food product the my area is most known for.

Something I've never understood is how it's possible that some areas have basically no cheesecakes. For christ sake, it's just a sandwich made up of three common ingredients.
When they said "sit down", I stood up.

Marmite is basically the most disgusting thing that I ever tasted (with oysters... oysters are bad... I often wonder what the guy who saw an oyster for the first time and said "Oh I'm going to open it and eat the weird thing inside that looks like snort !" looked like...).

I don't understand the taste... I think it's beer brewing waste, something like that ?

Nutella is quite an improvement although I'd believe that Marmite is actually better for your health...

Bighead, the Cheesesteak thing actually looks really good
