    Anyone can go crazy, surely?

I read that the highjacking theory gave the families of the passengers of that plan hope. However, I find it hard to imagine a scenario in which the people are still alive but haven't been heard from yet. If this was just a plan to highjack and crash the plane, then obviously there's no hope. But if the passengers were to be used as bargaining chips to extort money out of governments, they'd surely be heard from by now unless something went terribly wrong.
When they said "sit down", I stood up.

I think we can safely rule hijacking out.
    So what happened?

Why can we rule out hijacking? That still seems like a very plausible possibility to me.

Wouldn't we have heard about/from the passengers and crew by now?

I was thinking of a scenario in which the plane was hijacked and then crashed killing all aboard. Like the third plane on 9/11 that crashed in a field due to the amazing actions of the passengers.
