Default My meeting with the band and making Greg smile. Interview with him imminent!

    Please forgive any typos, haha.
After Darrell made his thread, I thought I'd make my own about my spontaneous meeting with the band since there is so much to tell.
Hard work and dedication really pays off and I got a wonderful experience with the band, even meeting Greg!

This was the concert that took place at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia on August 2nd. Coincidentally, I'd been in the front row for the first time at an Offspring concert 10 years earlier in the same exact venue! I made my Dad an Offspring fan that day. This is the only photo I can find from that album, unfortunately. It was taken in almost the same exact spot as the one of me with Noodles 10 years later.

I got spotted by Noodles when I held up my sign for him and he pointed right at me when he saw it. When I opened it up to show my reconstructed Greg sign when Greg sang and Noodles spotted that one, he pointed at me, and then pointed over at Greg. Earlier, before the sun had set, I noticed Dexter, Todd, Amber and Noodles by the side of the stage when the Vandals were playing and a friend of mine whom I met at the concert said he was sure they were looking over at me when I pointed them out to him.

The crowd was really rough and a crowd-surfer came down on my arm and badly bruised the medial epicondyle of my left elbow so, after they were done playing Smash, Noodles walked over to where I was, pointed down at me and shouted to the security there, "HER! I want HER! Bring her up on the stage!" So they helped me and my friend Jamie pushed on my ass to get me over the rail and I apologized for having bad knees. Then they helped me up onto the stage and I apologized again and rolled onto the stage, ass to the crowd. It was okay, though, because Noodles had his hand out to help me up. I then asked if I could hug him and we hugged. He escorted me to the side and shouted to the crew there, "This is my friend, Melyssa. Take good care of her!" Then I asked for some water because I was about to pass out from dehydration. I was able to enjoy the encore from the side of the stage. I'd put Adam's (one of my friends) phone and wallet in my bag because he didn't want to lose them if he went crowd-surfing, so I was worried about being separated like that. A girl that knew Todd asked to get some photos of me holding my Greg sign, too. After that, while still on the side of the stage, Noodles came over to me and introduced me to "Mrs. Noodles" and I gave her a hug. I don't remember all of the dialogue, but I ended up saying to Noodles, "I just don't want Greg to think I'm creepy." He smiled and replied with, "Oh, he doesn't think that. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the opposite." That made me very happy to hear. I frantically told one of the crew and Noodles that I had my friend's phone and wallet and I had to give them back to him, so they told me to give them to him and tell him to go to the back left gate. I mentioned we also had another friend who drove us and was told to have him go to the gate, as well and for me to go, of course. I then said hi to Todd as I walked off the stage, gave my friend back his things and told him to get Jamie and go wait by the back left gate. The girl who took my photo with my sign brought me my bag and I thanked her and was then escorted through a guarded gate and over to where the tour buses were. I rendezvoused with Noodles en route and he asked me how my wrists were feeling and said with a laugh that he thought my arm warmers were casts. I told him they were better and it had been two years since my wrist surgery. He then said to one of the crew there, "This is the girl who wants to interview Greg. Can you see if you can go ahead and get that set up?" I was in complete shock. That must have meant that Greg okayed it! I got a photo with Noodles then. He mentioned the interview again to someone else but then apologized and said he had to go get changed. I'll wait until after the Smash tour to inquire about the interview since I know they are very busy right now with it.
A few minutes later, Greg walked out to the bus with one of his sons and was holding food. I whispered very loudly to Jamie who was standing to my left, "Oh, my god! That's Greg!" When Greg walked by me I said, "Hi, Greg. I'm the creepy girl." He chuckled and offered his hand for a handshake, which I accepted. Then I asked if I could give him a hug and we hugged. I was careful not to knock the food out of his hand, I didn't want to bother him because I clearly caught him off guard (one of his sons was with him) so I didn't ask for a photo or autograph. I apologized for stinking, saying I'd just been buried under a pile of armpits, which was entirely accurate. I was the only fan in Philly who got to meet Greg after the show, as far as I know.
After about 30 minutes of being the only fans (my two friends and I) back near the bus, a few other fans snuck by security to join us before Pete and Noodles came back out. Pete came up to me after he came out of the building. I asked him if he knew who I was. He said, "Of COURSE I know who you are. It's great to finally meet you!" Really?! So I hugged him, got his autograph and a photo and he asked me how my wrists were doing. I told him I still can't play the drums, but I try to play bass, then joked about the fresh surgical scar on my throat and asked him about the awesome necklace he was wearing. The topic of my sign came up. Pete may have asked me if I got an autograph from Greg. I opened my sign and said, "Well, I originally had hoped he'd sign it here. *points*" Pete then said he'd take the sign in for Greg to autograph and when he returned with it, he told me he took a photo of Greg holding the sign and said he'd tweet it to me later. I excitedly thanked him and told him he's cooler than Batman. He seemed to like that.
As they were leaving, Noodles asked me if I got a photo with Greg. He seemed to be expecting me to say yes but I said no, which was the truth. Then I asked Noodles for his autograph and asked where Dexter was. He said he didn't know, so I told him to tell Dexter that Melyssa LOVES science. He laughed and said sure and I added that I'm a bio major. Then we had to go. I waved goodbye as they were partying in the bus and we left and I could finally pee. I'd had to go since I downed that bottle of water the crew guy gave me on the stage! It was a wonderful night and an amazing experience I will certainly never forget.

Here are some photos and a couple videos. I was bummed my hair had fallen flat during the course of the show. It was more up and punk before being in the sauna-like crowd atmosphere.
I spotted myself in a photo taken during the encore while I was browsing for photos from the show.

You can see me jumping during the chorus, despite having knees in terrible condition, on the side stage left of Noodles. I raised my arms to rock at other parts. The bass was also awesomely loud at this concert, as was Greg's mic. Huge coincidence! You need headphones to hear just how loud the bass was in this song, though.

You can see me hold up my Greg sign whenever Greg sings, "Take'em out!" His mic was pretty loud! I'm in front of Noodles, still in the crowd at this point.

Taken by a girl who knows Todd. She took a few normal ones, then asked me to hold it like I did when I was rocking out.

Here are the autographs I got. Keep in mind that my Greg sign was torn in half and got tattered edges due to the torrential thunderstorm that occurred on the night of the Philadelphia Offspring concert in 2012. I put it back together very nicely.

I said, "Hi, Greg. I'm the creepy girl." He chuckled, then wanted a handshake and I gave it. I wanted a hug and he gave it. One of his sons was there, too. Cute. Then Pete got him to autograph my sign for me because I was too polite to ask myself since he was on his way to eat. Pete also took this of photo of him holding it. - 8/2/2014.

Thanks a lot! It was a sureal experience, for sure. I feel much better now that I am certain that I will get to interview Greg. Noodles wouldn't have mentioned it the way he did if Greg said no. I just have no idea when or how it will happen, just that it will.

I'm so glad I could hold your attention. I didn't intend for it to be that long; it just happened. What I forgot to mention was that the girl who took my photo holding my sign on the stage and handed me my bag shouted, "Bye, Melyssa!" as she was leaving with Todd. I thought that was cool.

I was ridiculed by a lot of people (not going to mention names) for wanting to interview Greg before. I'm just a fan and it's Greg we're talking about, so it's I think it's a pretty big deal. I may have passed up my chance to get a photo with Greg that day, choosing to respect his privacy over my own desire for proof I met him, but I'm sure I'll get another chance.

That's encouraging, lol. I hope you get to have a beer with them, too. If you make a lasting impression on them, they never forget you. That's one of the amazing things about them.
